Is the name Louis only for babies and toddlers?

My son is 16 month and his name is Louis. It's a popular name and I know that but two people have commented recently that it sounds very baby and they can't think of Louis as being a grown man.

He got his name due to my DHs dad and brother have Louis as a middle name and we liked it (after checking over 3000 names on that name app) & Theodore as his middle name as my great grandfather was a Theodore.

I worked with a Louis who was really nice and never thought about it but now just wanted to hear your thoughts on this.

Louis Walsh is a grown up man

getdownonit · 28/05/2020 07:35

Louis Tomlinson as well.

Ginfilledcats · 28/05/2020 07:37

Is it Louis pronounced with the IS at the end or Louis pronounced the french way, with IE at the end?

Either way it's a lovely classic and timeless name I think. Suitable for baby through to grown man? Besides, not much you can do about it now without really confusing the poor lad x

Louis is a fine name for any age. I know a Louis in his 70s. It’s a name that ages really well.

Love51 · 28/05/2020 07:38

In my area, there is a by-law as soon as they start school you have to change their name to Dave. A proper grown up man's name.

ConnellWaldronsChain · 28/05/2020 07:40

Louis Theruex? (or however it's spelt)

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 28/05/2020 07:40

The 18 king Louis of France were adults

It's probably just popular at the moment and in 70 years will be an old mans name

stellabelle · 28/05/2020 07:43

Lord Louis Mountbatten was a grown up man. It's a wonderful name.

CaptainMyCaptain · 28/05/2020 07:44

Louis Armstrong.

PeppasMuddyPuddles · 28/05/2020 07:46

I really like it & would use it for a boy.
It was my grandfathers name & he suited it as a grown man.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 28/05/2020 08:10

Ridiculous! Louis is a fine name for any age

Firstimemam · 28/05/2020 08:47

Louis Theroux - swoon Grin
I have a friend called Louis, he's late 40s and a total 'man' He's hairy, loud and plays in a very noisy band. He's also a real sweetheart.
Dh and I actually considered the name because of our lovely friend!

BikeRunSki · 28/05/2020 08:57

I work with a Louis who must be in his mid 40s. Good name, very much not just for toddlers. I think it’s just become more popular fur babies recently because of Prince Louis.

Poetryinaction · 29/05/2020 01:46

No, it is a strong name, stood the test of time, international, name of kings, strong meaning, can be shortened to Lou.
It's not like Teddy or Alfie. They sound like toddlers to me.

DramaAlpaca · 29/05/2020 01:48

Yup, what Poetry said ^^

Kokeshi123 · 29/05/2020 02:23

I think a lot of people don't know how to spell it and have no idea who Louis XIV (and all his ilk) was, so they think it is "Louie" and that it's a nickname.

howlatthetrees · 29/05/2020 02:26

It’s a gorgeous, strong name

JustinMyJustin · 29/05/2020 06:44

Louis is the name of kingsSmile Very much a grown up name.

ArriettyJones · 29/05/2020 06:48

Bless you OP, that did make me chortle. Thank you.

You might have given birth to a whole new genre of baby name threads! Smile

Firstimemam · 29/05/2020 07:01

Amazing! He's a Louis pronounces the French Name without the s at the end, I preferred this spelling over Louie (I couldn't handle 4 vowels in a row and just preferred the more classic spelling) A lot of people seem to think it's Lewis. I only correct them if they are people that "matter", if it's nurses in the hospital, I couldn't care less.

So is it pronounced the same as Lewis? But spelt Louis?

Firstimemam · 29/05/2020 14:17

No it's Louis pronounced the French way as said above but people get it wrong and pronounce it as Lewis.

limpingparrot · 29/05/2020 14:21
