3 week old & sore bum ..

Babygray2020 · 23/05/2020 20:14

My son had a slight sore bottom, my midwife recommended Sudo cream ( a thin layer ) after using it for 3/4 days we’ve noticed his bottom has got worse, it’s so red !
We’ve tried to air his bottom as much as we can, but he screams it’s horrible.
We’ve got water wipes, he’s fine with the nappies. Could he have had a reaction to the sudocream?
Is there anything else worth using ?
Thank you

My newborn had this and it ended up being thrush - she needed anti fungal cream from the chemist x

Metanium: it literally dries up nappy rash overnight

ellesbellesxxx · 23/05/2020 20:20

I was still just using water and cotton wool at three weeks though and drying with a fresh muslin to make sure they are dry

If sudocrem is making it worse then stop using it. Metanium is good but you really need to do a very thin layer. Sometimes just leaving them nappy off for ages with no cream on at all can help. Warm salt water and cotton wool to clean.

I used the Weleda Calendula Nappy Change Cream in both of mine, it's so gentle and soothing when they have a sore bum. If it's really bad (sometimes happens if they've pooped while in the car etc. and it wasn't changed immediately) I use the Burt's Bees Diaper Ointment which is really thick and lasts for ages on the skin.

nevisbump · 23/05/2020 20:26

Yes could be the sudocream, my oldest had the same. Yellow metanium to clear it up with vaseline over as a protective layer. Then once clear just use vaseline no issues since then on either of mine

SweepTheHalls · 23/05/2020 20:26

We had to stop all wipes, even water ones and go to washable wipes.

grobagz · 23/05/2020 20:30

Yes I never had any luck with Sudocrem with mine, although it does smell nice. Bepathen always works for me, it seems much more gentle too. The yellow metanium does clear it up if nothing else is working. It's hard at that age as they poo so much!

bulletjournalbilly · 23/05/2020 20:38

Yellow Metamium ..

loveacupoftea18 · 23/05/2020 20:40

Another vote for Weleda here. Really gentle on their skin.

mummmy2017 · 23/05/2020 20:42

Check it's not your nappies.
My were allergic to certain brands.

mamaoffourdc · 23/05/2020 20:51

We used Lucas pawpaw

StoneSourFan · 23/05/2020 20:52

It could either be the wipes or the nappies.
I also use bepanthem as a barrier cream and reusable wipes and my little one hasn't had a sore bottom and she is 10 months.

I agree with pp re a very thin layer of metainium xxx

moleeye · 23/05/2020 21:37

My son had this, I was using water wipes.

Ditched them and went back to cotton wool and water and yellow metanium at night.

Cleared up almost immediately

Didn't start using wipes again until he was about 6-8 weeks

Doje · 23/05/2020 21:45

Bepanthen always worked better than Sudocrem for me and my two DC.

Firstimemam · 23/05/2020 21:57

Don't use Sudo cream, get bepanthen or the yellow one (forgotten the name), they pop loads so it's quite normal for their bums to get sore x

Skinnyjeansandaloosetop · 23/05/2020 21:59

Metanium- it’s magic stuff

mossberry · 23/05/2020 22:21

Sudocrem can make nappy rash worse, particularly if you're spreading quite a thick layer. It can actually take the skin off.

My daughter had really nasty nappy rash at 5 weeks which I couldn't get on top of and my Health Visitor, who has a background in dermatology, suggested Hydromol ointment to create a waterproof barrier, which worked.

Gwynfluff · 23/05/2020 22:24

Bepanthan and cheap nappies not branded worked. Sudocrem and branded have lots of perfume in

CCW86 · 24/05/2020 00:08

I had this too! My DD’s nappy rash was so bad it was bleeding, poor thing. We tried Sudocream, and the yellow Metanium, but the one that worked for us was Bepanthan. It worked wonders, along with lots of nappy free time and topping up the Bepanthan when it dried up. We basically had him naked from the bum down for 2 days until it wasn’t so red raw

womaninatightspot · 24/05/2020 00:16

Like a pp I'd suggest bepanthen also as much nappy free time as you can take whilst it clears. I was also told to let them lie on sheepskin during nappy free time. Apparently the oils are naturally waterproof and help prevent urine reaching skin. My DC's nappy rash resolved quickly but I feel like it's more of a personal experience than data based recommendation.

Success1986 · 24/05/2020 00:21

Metanium miracle cream!! Thin layer be careful it stains clothes x

goldenslumbers1 · 24/05/2020 00:24

We had the same with my son, when he was a week old - our GP prescribed the cream and then it finally started to clear up.

Spanglebangle · 24/05/2020 00:26

Another vote for yellow metanium. It really is magic.

spicelader · 24/05/2020 00:31

I found it is trial and error. One DC I can’t use wipes on at all or nappy rash starts. One DC has a reaction to metanium but sudocream works perfectly for them.
