Please tell me I am not the only parent to let my sons wear tights...

?

Am I?
It is getting cold. I always put tights (navy) on my sons under their trousers in winter. I think I am the only one.

Do children need tights in addition to trousers when it is freezing cold in winter?

I think they do.

get some long jons bit more masculine but well done for thinking of them but changing for pe cou,ld get embarrassing

law3 · 18/09/2007 08:47

how old is he? i dont see anything wrong with it, but other kids might take the mick

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 18/09/2007 09:55

My oldest is 5 1/2, and in year 1 in school.
I get what you are all saying. I dont want him to be teased. But school trousers are so thin! You reckon he would be ok with a parka style jacket that covers up his bottom? They never wear their hats, scarves and mitts anyway. He went to school with them, and it was lost by break time.

My youngest is just 2. And he shall wear tights. (Respiratory problems, so got to keep him warm) Still September is too early for tights!

It just seems that from September to April all kids are totally underdressed, and with snotty noses. I wonder if there is a connection.

Ds 1and 2 wore tights under trousers as babies in the winter - both were summer born so quite tiny when I did this. Very cute too; navy or bottle green coloured, over their fat little legs. Wouldn't put ds3 (3) in tights; there are plenty of warm jersey or flannel lined trousers around, eg Gap, Boden and many others I'm sure. Thermal vests, warm socks and thick trousers are the way to go methinks.

OrmIrian · 18/09/2007 09:57

Ah...snotty nose tiramisu! IME snotty noses are more likely to be caused by heating coming on.

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 18/09/2007 09:59

OrmIrian, is this linked to a warm house or the dry air?

I am just wondering as we turned on the heating last week, and we have all come down with colds, I put it down to the weather changing.

I don't have a problem with it at all.
As babies tights are great cos they can't be pulled off. My ds continued to wear tights under trousers when we were out for long in the cold till last winter (when he was 3). I wouldn't put him in them now he's at school but have comtemplated getting some footless tights (ie long-johns) for him this winter - he has very skinny legs and gets very cold, bless him.

OrmIrian · 18/09/2007 10:01

Dry air I think. (As an athsmatic I find I get worse as soon as the heating goes on and I'm told it's because the air dries out more.) But possibly also because of the change in temperature between outside and in.

brimfull · 18/09/2007 10:02

no tights for my ds

larf at the thought

warm jacket and vest if it gets cold enough

he hardly ever wears a coat,he's still in shorts.Where do you live?
Still sunny here.

Chickhick · 18/09/2007 10:03

Where do you live?? North Pole?

francagoestohollywood · 18/09/2007 10:03

Tiramisu, are you Italian like me? Ds wore ehm long johns until he started to complain about it (3ish). Now 5 he's all English and wouldn't wear them, apart from when he is pretending to be robin hood, obviously. They'd be accetable in northern Italy.

Budababe · 18/09/2007 10:06

Colds are viral and will tend to be around more in the winter because of closed windows and heating. Yes you can be more prone to catching a cold if you get cold but in the main they are viral.

We are in Budapest and it gets very cold and DS still just wears normal M&S school trousers with a jumper and his coat. I do always buy a long one that covers the bum. He tends to feel heat more than cold to be honest - all the running around he does.

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 18/09/2007 10:09

umm Right. Where am I?
I am in the arctic regions of.... London..... oh the shame the shame!

god thought you were in aberdeen !lol

You need to harden him up!

FranSanDisco · 18/09/2007 10:12

I could understand it if you were going mountain climbing perhaps. Ds would die laughing at the suggestion I'm afraid but then he never feels cold.

TinyGang · 18/09/2007 10:16

I have put tights on my ds before now if it's very cold (not girly colours though!)

I'm not sure he'd be too happy now he's nearly 6 mind you, but we've done it it the past.

Look out for little boys long johns in Lidls - they sell them in the winter sometimes.

TiramisuTartsandPiesInOrbit · 18/09/2007 10:20

Thanks.
I will keep a look out for long johns. Maybe they have them in Mothercare, there is one not far from me.

I guess I needed a reality check, it isnt that cold here. I am just always so frozen. My husband keeps saying to toughen them up, now I have to admit he might have been rigth...

Will I live this down?

NO to tights!

and seriously, i very much doubt that having cold legs can contribute to respiratory problems. I am asthmatic and worse at the moment as the heating has ust been put back on all day. If my toes are warm and my upper body and hands then i am fine.

please take the tights off your poor ds!

scotslass · 18/09/2007 10:29

My ds has occaisionally worn tights under his trousers, but only if it is 'proper' winter and we are going to be outside all day, christmas at eurodisney sort of thing.

I wouldn't put him in tights for school as they are not outside for very long and I do think he would get teased tbh.

Hurlyburly · 18/09/2007 10:31

You are coddling.

My (unfortunate) DS has to go to school in shorts. All year round. Poor cold little knees, he has.

OrmIrian · 18/09/2007 10:35

Oh not not shorts!!! I remember my poor DB going off to school all year round in shorts. Until he went to senior school. Poor little purple legs

DH wanted me to biy shorts for DS#2 this term. He said because they looked cute but actually I think it was because he thought he should suffer like DH did

law3 · 18/09/2007 10:37

hurly - could he not wear tights under his shorts lol!!!

castille · 18/09/2007 10:41

Someone I know used to dress her boys in short dungarees and tights, and I thought it was a bit . TBH I don't think legs get that cold when they're moving about.

What happens when they change for PE? Won't they be ridiculed for ever?
