Just that really. She can sit up confidently for 30 mins by herself, laugh, babble, say dada, plays well but HATES tummy time and just won't roll or make any attempt at crawling. She just lies there confused and then gets upset. Should I be doing something more to encourage or will she just one day crawl or roll without me prompting?

She will do it eventually. My DS didn’t crawl will he was 1.

ScarfLadysBag · 07/05/2020 19:13

My DD was a late roller and crawler. She just was happy sitting! She crawled at about 10 months and stared walking at 14, so caught up fine. Some babies skip crawling entirely.

ScarfLadysBag · 07/05/2020 19:15

But it wouldn't hurt to mention it to HV during your next check. Ours are being done by phone. They might have some suggestions for encouraging tummy time or building core strength.

She’ll get there, might skip the crawling phase!

Keep giving her opportunities and she’ll get there... might even take you by surprise one day.

FourPlasticRings · 07/05/2020 19:18

Sitting up builds core strength so is essentially tummy time. Carrying them in a sling also counts and being tummy to tummy with them when you're sitting on the sofa. They don't have to be actually lying down on their tummies.

Cornishmumofone · 07/05/2020 19:24

My baby rolled once at 7.5 months and then didn't manage it again for a couple of months. She didn't crawl until she was over 12 months old... but she suddenly started walking at 8.5 months old. Definitely speak to a Health Visitor, but don't lose hope!

SnuggyBuggy · 07/05/2020 19:31

Mine didn't do either at that age. Rolling and crawling are soft milestones, some never crawl and go straight to walking.

Burgerandchipvan · 07/05/2020 19:56

It's still on the early side for crawling. I had an early crawler who was a late walker! Their development is often surprising and confusing. Lots of floor time is good, otherwise enjoy sitting down, it doesn't last for long!

rainbowcakes · 07/05/2020 23:30

My DD is 11.5 months (premature so her corrected age is 9.5 months). Shes never rolled over (has always hated tummy time) and has absolutely no interest in crawling yet. But they'll get there in their own time!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 07/05/2020 23:37

Dd was a very late crawler (and walker). She is now 10 and has won triathlons. The baby / toddler dd is so so different to the school girl dd. It is most confusing!

One thing I did realise was that she was my first child and she was very good at communicating. So when at 11 months she said “Mama, ball! Ball now Mama!” I got her ball for her. And why would she crawl / walk when she had a handy servant to do all the work?

Eventually I started saying “no - dd get it” and she did.

Gooseysgirl · 07/05/2020 23:46

My DS didn't crawl until 11 months. My DD never crawled - she eventually bum shuffled. She rolled over once at 4 months and never did it again 😄

Zebrasinpyjamas · 07/05/2020 23:54

My DC have never liked tummy time and were late crawlers and walkers. I got excited that DC 3 rolled over at 8weeks a few times thinking she was bucking the trend but then she stopped. She's now 14 mths and is only just doing it again. She is now bottom shuffled rather than crawling. Dd2 didn't roll until 12 mths (just didn't fancy it I think as she was happy sitting watching the world go by), didn't crawl really, but suddenly decided to walk with no notice at 20 mths and by 24 mths was running , scooting everything. I think she just observed every then decided to do it and cracked it straight away. She's still like that now she's older.

problembottom · 08/05/2020 07:24

She’ll do when she’s ready. DD crawled at 9 months and she started walking last month at 15 months. One day we had no steps the next she was running around the house! A few days ago she decided she could climb the stairs, she had never climbed a single one so I was surprised when she shot up the whole flight like a rocket killing herself laughing. Bonkers child.

Soubriquet · 08/05/2020 07:27

Honestly...don’t worry.

My dd didn’t crawl until she was 13 months. She used to him shuffle for a bit but mostly she was just sit there. Wouldn’t roll either

She didn’t walk until she was 18 months. No cruising. She just got up one day and walked across the room and never stopped since.

She’s 7 now and is perfectly fine.

Soubriquet · 08/05/2020 07:28

And yeah she was a talker from an early age

Ds was the opposite. Walked earlier but talked later

I think it’s one or the other

MustStopSnacking28 · 08/05/2020 07:28

Hi OP, just echoing comments above really but my DS rolled about twice bland was a later crawler (about 11 months) and Walker (about 14/15 months!) I was quite worried as he was later but nursery/health visitors never seemed concerned. The main problem I had was that he got so frustrated as he rocked backwards and forwards but couldn’t work out how to go! Then crawled backwards for a bit...but got there in the end Smile

BEANBAG765 · 08/05/2020 07:39

My kids never crawled. They were also very late rollers- perhaps towards 12months. They were laying there like two blobs.
Then straight to walking around 14months.

Anotherdayinmumlife · 08/05/2020 07:43

Ah thank you for all your responses. I try not to worry and let her just get on with things how she wants, I just didn't know if i should keep prompting her. I've done all the waving toys in front of her etc, but it's not worth her getting upset if she doesn't like being on her tummy. I'll let her lead the way then and enjoy her being in one place for now whilst it lasts haha

DD didn't crawl until 13/14 months and then she spent a few months just combat crawling rather than hand and knee. In the end we designed an elaborate game with chocolate buttons on the kitchen floor to get her going. She rolled around 8-9 months but wasnt keen. Now at 20 months she isnt walking but she's so much chattier and more communicative than her friends. Mention it to the HV just to get advice. We had a private physio come round for £60 in the as I was worried when she wasnt crawling at 1 as many of her peers were already walking but have learnt that she's just slower with the physical stuff.

BigusBumus · 08/05/2020 08:09

My youngest son never crawled and hardly ever rolled. He cruised a bit at 10 months and started walking just before his 1st birthday.

My oldest son was an expert crawler from 9 months but didn't walk till 14 months.

Interestingly oldest son was also a nightmare to potty train, right up to 4 years old! Youngest son took his own nappy off at 22 months and that was that, no potty, nothing and no accidents!

Just shows how different they all are, so don't worry too much.

Abouttimemum · 08/05/2020 09:45

DS is 13 months and doesn’t walk or crawl, he’s just started being able to move around really, and get from sitting to lying and vice versa. He was premature but is still well behind. He’s fine in every other way. He has a physiotherapist and consultant, they think he is advanced re his fine motor skills, such as how he handles things etc, but babies get judged on their gross motor skills generally.
Exercises we get asked to do include lots and lots of floor play, having toys out of his reach, prop on his hands and knees so he gets used to the feel. Don’t make things easy for him essentially. Also practice lifting to stand and even when he’s sitting on my knee have his feet touching the floor so he gets used to the feel.
Ultimately he’ll do it when he’s ready I guess but lots of play time is the key piece of advice we get.

Quail15 · 10/05/2020 09:18

Don't worry, my DD hated being on her tummy. She rolled over once at 4 months - screamed the house down as she hated it so much. She rolled over again accidentally at 8 months then took her first steps a few weeks later. She never really crawled. Once she realised she could walk that was all she did.

My DS hated tummy time and never really rolled. He rolled himself from back to front a couple of times but hated it so much I think he didn't want to bother doing it again!

He was sitting unaided at 6mo and I would just park him in the middle of the floor with a couple of toys. He was happy until they were out of reach and then he'd shout for me!

He crawled at 11mo and by 14mo was walking confidently.

Megan2018 · 10/05/2020 12:36

Nor does mine, it’s not a race Smile
