Cutting my 4mo DD's nails and...

...somehow managed to catch a chunk of her thumb! She didn't even cry so it took me a few seconds to realise but God, do I feel like an awful person! It bled like crazy but luckily a bit of epaderm ointment helped to ease the bleeding. She's happily sleep-feeding now but I just can't stop looking at it and feeling like a monster Blush bless her for being so brave about it though.

You known what, as a nanny, cutting nails is literally my very worst thing - I start sweating if parents casually drop an 'Oh, and could you trim her nails today please?' on me! Hideous, hideous task! Out of interest, which scissors did you use?

RogersVideo · 07/05/2020 17:35

I used nail scissors in hospital after DS was born and cut into his thumb. I freaked out because I was hard to tell the damage, it looked like a chunk :( It healed fine in the end but I felt awful.

katmarie · 07/05/2020 17:37

I've done it, I hate cutting nails for this very reason. If I can I file them now but that is a bit trickier.

I did exactly the same thing when my now 17 year old was a baby. I felt so guilty. They heal very quickly!

Lordfrontpaw · 07/05/2020 17:43

I used needlepoint scissors when he was asleep.

KellyHall · 07/05/2020 17:45

Everyone I know has done this!

I used to cut them while dd was asleep. She's only just started being compliant now, she's 3 years old.

cheeseychovolate · 07/05/2020 17:55

The midwife told me to gently bite baby's nails.

ScarfLadysBag · 07/05/2020 17:55

I think most of us have done this! I gave up the clippers and just bit/nibbled them myself after my mum said that's what she did when I was a baby Grin I'm sure that's a horrendous no-no nowadays but it worked a treat.

Lordfrontpaw · 07/05/2020 17:56

I did see a funny video on YouTube of a woman cutting her dogs claws (do dogs have nails or claws?). She put a plastic hair cover on her head and smeared the forehead with peanut butter - as the dog kicked it off she went in with the clippers.

Windyatthebeach · 07/05/2020 18:29

Just peel them off. Seriously it works fine...

arinah · 07/05/2020 18:59

@Pickles89 I used baby sized clippers, although I am now tempted at the idea of just biting them off. I'd hate to have the responsibility of cutting another's child's nails!
I'd do it when she's asleep but she wakes up if you even as much as breathe too hard, it was much easier with DS because he loved his sleep 😂

Have you considered getting a Thumble? It’s just s little file with a holder thing that goes on your thumb, works a treat!

arinah · 07/05/2020 19:47

@Eggcellent29 sounds interesting, I'll look into it!

Another nail nibbler here! Wait for him to fall asleep first

whatswithtodaytoday · 08/05/2020 16:46

I did it when mine was tiny too - I felt awful and kept checking on him overnight in case it started bleeding a lot, but it was almost healed by the next day.

I file them now, while he's having his bedtime bottle.

arinah · 08/05/2020 17:47

@Keyboard91 I really wish I could do it in her sleep, but she's such a light sleeper that she'll be awake in seconds anyway!

peanutandpumkin · 08/05/2020 18:24

Same with hubby and our first born 😣 he was a preemie so he freaked out big time! It was tiny and baby was asleep didnt even feel it.. next time I walked into hubby cutting baby's nails wearing what I think looked like a vintage watch repair kit glass (lots of magnifying glasses😂 it was a sight!
He was testing how much he needed to "zoom" into find baby's nails to cut 🙄🤷🏽‍♀️

Chill! It happens, it will heal! Just be careful next time :)

tenredthings · 08/05/2020 18:38

I used to nibble them off. Removes all risk of accidentally hurting them.

arinah · 08/05/2020 18:58

@peanutandpumkin that's hilarious 😂 it's healed already thank goodness, I'm just a bit terrified to do the other hand now. I'll have to have a good nibble on them later.

revelsandrose · 08/05/2020 19:17

A midwife/health visitor advised me to bite them rather than cut, makes me gag though, and yes I've also cut dcs finger while using baby clippers.

Millie2013 · 08/05/2020 19:21

OH did this to DD, she screamed the house down, he felt awful and still feels bad now (she’s 7 Grin)
DD has no lasting scars, mental or physical

merryhouse · 08/05/2020 20:09

I used to peel them off (obviously you have to get the angle right).

For a while the only way I could get them cut was while he stood on the windowsill watching the dustcart. Not sure what the gang thought Grin they all used to wave at us

FourPlasticRings · 08/05/2020 20:26

I bit my baby's nails off, then used a baby file to round them off.

Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese · 08/05/2020 20:27

I swear catching your baby while trimming their nails is a right of passage for new parents 🙈

arinah · 08/05/2020 21:36

@merryhouse whatever works, right? Grin
@Cheeseycheeseycheesecheese 😩
