DS is 13 days old and already i feel like i have got used to disposables - so today we are going cloth!

I put a Muslin envelope fold on him this morning and within an hour it was soaked but i didn't put a booster\fleece in? would this have stopped it? is this had i make the muslin absorbent? ( do like the idea of using these as they are not as bulky for his tiny body and i have loads of them)

So after this disaster i got out a bimbles and he now has that on with a throw away liner, and Newborn wrap and his bum looks MASSIVE, im paranoid that he cant move his legs as much and that there is a lot of weight on his tummy!! think im being over worrying, please someone tell me that he wont always look massive! and that he is ok!

Thank you xx

Don't worry. He may just be too heavy a wetter for the muslins, they are the kind of thing you would use for literally the first few days but you have already done that phase in disposables and some babies wet a lot, but he will grow into the bimbles. The hip positioning is better for the baby's hips so don't worry about that. He will majorly grow into them over the next few weeks and then it will look normal, its mainly just because you got used to the disposable nappy look, a folded terry would be bigger. before about 6 weeks most cloth nappies look huge cos they look out of proportion but this is totally normal.

FlameBatfink · 09/09/2007 11:59

Everything LM said really

You could double up on the muslins, but I think the bimbles are probably the better bet.

Rumpel · 09/09/2007 12:01

Well done you - just takes time to get used to them.

thank you, have just changed this first bimble, as it was soaked ( think i have a heavy wetter!) but the fleece felt fine and the so did the liner, just a bit cold to the touch (take it this is normal) - dh put the same wrap back on him but then realised that that was to wet so put another one on!
i think he is fine, just me that needs the adjusting!!

Is changing every 2 hours about the average for cloth??

littlekiwibaby · 09/09/2007 12:48

As you wash and wash the nappies they will become more absorbent over time. Well done you on trying muslins though. Shaped fitteds for me! (well for my babies lol)
Cloth bums do look big but that's part of the fun- they are cuddly and comfy. And who could say that about a disposie?

FlameBatfink · 09/09/2007 12:49

No normally needed every 2 hours... more like 3-4. How many times have the nappies been washed?

The wrap - was it wet on the outside/bindings or inside? Inside just wipe with a babywipe and reuse.

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 09/09/2007 12:53

i have washed the Bimbles 3 times, wrap was wet on the inside and felt really damp on the leg elastic ?
These are a newborn wrap, i have motherease rikki (sm) shall i try them next?

I also only have 3 bimbles so i may be getting some more tomorrow!

I tend to swap between two wraps for the day so they have a chance to dry out between changes. And you do really get used to the size of their bums, I'm really proud of ds2's huge a*&e now! Loads of encouragement to keep going though, impressed at using a muslin at all with a newborn!

nappyzone · 09/09/2007 15:17

aww happy first day! i looooooove bimbles - even though its my night choice i had my ds in em today as my washing routine went ti** up trying to fit in school unforms as well! eek! Bib bums rock!

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 09/09/2007 17:08

2nd nappy went for 3 1/2 hours and feel better with that, really shocked on how wet they are outside and dry on the inside ( may sound silly i know) back in disposables now as ran out of cloth but going to order more bimbles tonight!

Ds2 in terries from about a couple of weeks old. Now 18 months. Is also a heavy wetter. Use a booster and do change the nappies every couple of hours. Has been fine re rashes etc though (fleece liners obviously do the job). Have had to change folds as he's grown for maximum effect (which keeps dh on the hop - he's always one out of date), but have found them more reliable than disposables were for ds1. You just need to set up a regular washing plan now so they never get out of hand.

mozzybear · 09/09/2007 17:39

I remember the first time I put DS in a fluffle, the nappy looked huge! Now I don't register how big he looks. Just think of all that wonderful fluff!! Good luck xx

MrsBadger · 09/09/2007 17:45

hey pink
dd is 3wks now and her bimbles look fine on (though tis sometimes a struggle to popper her babygrow over them...)
I'm using small wraps (motherease airflow), not newborn, so they're a bit baggy, but the bindings don't touch the terry much so don't usually get damp - might be worth switching up a size as you have both.

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 09/09/2007 17:55

Thanks Everyone - Dont think i never could have gone down the cloth route without the Valuable help/advice of my fellow MN!

Hi pinky......I'm a cloth convert too, and like others, I actually now love the look of her big fluffy bum. She is actually growing out of many of the small sizes at 14 weeks and I'm using my birth to potty ones more and more!

I tend to use fleece liners rather than paper as it keeps her bum nice and dry, and find rikki wraps are great, although i have a tots wrap that i love as well.

A word of warning though....you'll be buying more and more wacky wraps etc before long......cloth is more addictive than mumsnet

Just had a quick peek at your pics....you have a lovely family

I hope DS2 is doing well and that DS1 is adjusting well to being a big brother.

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 09/09/2007 18:22

Hi daisy!

i have already one strawberry wrap! - Going to order some more nappies tonight, but do love the cloth, have tots bots bamboo but he is still to tiny for them at the moment!

DS1 is well and not really taking much notice of the new baby, but he started "big school" last week so he has been busy!!
How is your DD?

FLAME - or anyone else - what are the pocket nappies like, ?? Just had a look at the website and the swaddlebeess look good? _ ( thinking for when he gets bigger)

pinkrangerstartstowaddle · 09/09/2007 19:26

Dasiy - do you use the fleece liners in the Bimbles then?

OP posts:
lailasmum · 09/09/2007 20:04

some newborns are incredibly heavy wetters, sounds like you have one. You can always get a few boosters and add one to the nappy. 2 hrs is quite quick to change but bear with it.

lailasmum · 09/09/2007 20:07

Pocket nappies are really nice when they are older. I liked Fuzzi Bunz as they gave the best fit on my tall skinny daughter but wonderoos are good too-its best to see what fits the shape of your baby really before buying loads in one manufacturer as I have found wonderoos to be quite wide in the body. They dry fast too and are easy to take out an about.

nappyzone · 09/09/2007 20:21

ooooooooooooo pockets!!!!!!!!! they are super - id start with a sized one for a better fit like a fuzzi - swaddlebees pockets i have found the most temperemental of all of my pockets - each time he grows the fit gets better or worse. Not what id recommend for a first time pocket. lalliasmum is right that different ones suit different babes - im really lucky as apart from a one off cock up with a pea pod and numerous with my now working very well swaddlebee i have had great success with pockets hence my site is made up mainly of them lol! The birth to potty rages are really improving. My fave at the moment is defo my heiny onesize - mmmm

daisyandbabybootoo · 09/09/2007 20:24

sorry....off sifting through paperwork trying to find errant passport and marriage certificate!

i don't usually bother with a liner if the nappy itself is fleece lined, unless she is due her daily poo (she stopped pooing constantly at about 5.5 weeks).

i've got a couple of fuzzibunz pockets, a happy heiney and a nature babies stuffable. I don't find them as good as terry etc shaped ones as they wick around the legs, but they do look really good. I think i just need to play around with inserts etc.

I've also got some ella's house bumhuggers for nightime which are fab...lasting 12 hours easy with still some dry bits on them.

DD is doing great. She'll be 14 weeks on Tuesday . The time has just flown by.

bagpuss · 09/09/2007 20:35

My tip with pockets is to think about what sort of fastening you get on best with. Chances are there will be a pocket out there to suit you. I like aplix best for pockets as the fit is always slightly better on my ds2. Bumgenius are the best I've tried for reliability and they are BTP so will grow with him. I also like heineys. Fuzzi Bunz are excellent but I have recently found that they don't suit ds2 so well now that he is a very mobile toddler. Swaddlebees I have had mixed success with and minki pockets are really reliable for nights.

My ds2 was a heavy wetter as a newborn and has recently reverted again now that he is a toddler. My most successful purchase has been tots bots unbleached nappies. They are very thirsty. I also rated ME Sandy's when he was newborn. I always use motherease wraps - very reliable!

FlameBatfink · 09/09/2007 20:47

I'm with NZ on the swaddlebees - they are lovely on my dinky little dude, but you have a baby that bit too chunky and it all goes tits up.

I like Fuzzis

accessorizewithbabysick · 09/09/2007 20:50

While you're both here, nappyzone and flame. I've got a couple of medium fuzzis but they don't seem that roomy on ds (he's 9 months) Have just ordered another, but ought I to have got a large. I can't believe they'll still fit him if he keeps going at this rate. But they do seem like they'll be good when he's crawling/walking, a nice trim fit.
sorry to hijack pink

accessorizewithbabysick · 09/09/2007 20:50

sorry, that was a bit rude, I mean please may I have some advice?!
