Sat up with 10 week old with blocked nose - give her calpol?

Hi

I’m sat holding her upright as when she’s laid down in the cot next to me the mucus fills her nose and she’s getting distressed breathing. This is going to go on all night I think!!

Would you give her calpol to soothe her? I have given her some saline nasal spray, which hasn’t helped so far. No temp.

Thanks x

Calpol, some snufflebabe vapour rub, and tilt the cot. Also, if you can bear it, suck the snot out of her nose to give her some relief.

Tbh you'll still probably end up having to hold her upright - poor both of you, it's rotten when they have colds.

Gettingonabitnow · 03/03/2020 03:03

Thanks going to try putting her down again in 20 mins then going to give calpol.

DS had a similar cold recently. Snufflebaby vapour rub helped. He hated the snot sucker but it definitely improved his overall breathing and mood. I used calpol before bed and in the middle which helped us all get some sleep.

Calpol vapour plugs are amazing for stuffy noses - sorry, not a help to you tonight if you don't have one but really recommend buying one for future!

rubyblue40 · 03/03/2020 03:27

You can buy calpol saline drops, and then use an Aspirator to suck everything out. If you can buy them today, it really will help LO breathe.

Hopefull26 · 03/03/2020 03:48

Our little boy is just getting over the same cold, he's 8 weeks! He was sleeping on my chest the last as he was so distressed on his back! I bought an aspirator, saline spray, the calpol plug in and some snufflebabe vapour rub! The plug in worked wonders, tried some calpol but it didn't seem to help him, the vapour rub was also good. Yet to use the saline spray mainly as I'm reluctant to spray it up his nose! Seems to have dissappeared now, it did take over a week and I caught ive now caught it too 😂.

PrimeraVez · 03/03/2020 03:49

Why would you give calpol if she doesn’t have a fever? To be honest at that very young age I would just ride it out with saline nose spray

Ceejay19 · 03/03/2020 03:53

The calpol plug ins are amazing, but the box says not recommended for under 3 months. We've just used saline spray for a cold on my 9 week old. Hopefully she'll be over 3 months by the next cold and we can use the plug in, it was a miracle solution for my older son.

Thanks. I have been tempted with the snot sucker but she gets nose bleeds (under care of docs) so avoiding until that is resolved.

Given her calpol. She won’t be put down, at all. Nearly nodded off holding her then arrrggg!! DH will get up around 6 so 2 hours to go...although toddler will be up then too.

I see you've given Calpol now - I wouldn't do this unless she has a temperature.

Gettingonabitnow · 03/03/2020 04:20

Hi - can I ask why not?

xQueenMabx · 03/03/2020 04:28

Is she old enough to have calpol? Cant remember the minimum age. If she is and seems uncomfortable I'd give some.

EarringsandLipstick · 03/03/2020 04:31

For me, it's just that she's neither in pain or has a temp. So not needed.

I know she's distressed & miserable 😞 I'd carry on keeping her upright & look for something OTC tomorrow to relieve congestion.

Sorry OP I know it's tough 😕

Robuns · 03/03/2020 05:11

Snufflebabe drops on a flannel over a warm radiator or in a bowl of hot water in the room and saline drops we used at that age. I'd also not give calpol if no temp and it seems the blocked nose is what's upsetting her rather than pain.

Gettingonabitnow · 03/03/2020 05:57

Thanks everyone. Finally got her to sleep lying down at 4.30-5.30, then up for a feed 🤦‍♀️ Where’s the coffee!

Agree the calpol vapour plugs are brilliant!

Minnie888 · 03/03/2020 06:18

Your not supposed to use cal poly until 3 months? 10 weeks isn't old enough, I assume that's why you asked?

Minnie888 · 03/03/2020 06:18

Oops calpol of course, autocorrect!

Elliesmommy · 03/03/2020 06:23

I feel your pain. Between 3 of my children I spent most if last night awake. The calpol wouldn't have done any harm but I'd strictly use it for temps and pain. Snuffle babe is good , plug in calpols. Tilt the cot so shes more up right. I got a humidifier. Find it brilliant for helping to breathe

SilveryMountainStream · 03/03/2020 06:30

I bought a little room humidifier (about £13 on amazon prime) to run at night, and the combination of that plus a calpol plug-in have been fantastic at clearing blocked noses and stopping coughs - both for me and DH as well as the little ones.

Essentially the same trick as a bowl of hot water in the room but because the mist is continuous and more targeted with where it's blown it's seems to be even better. Wish I'd bought one years ago.

Amys136 · 03/03/2020 06:42

A wedgehog is great for keeping them slightly upright so you all get more sleep. We’ve almost permenanrky had one in our 10m DDs bed since about November

MiniMaxi · 03/03/2020 06:44

For future colds definitely look into getting a cool mist humidifier!

EarringsandLipstick · 03/03/2020 07:11

Sorry OP. Good luck for surviving today ☕️☕️☕️☕️
It's hard when they're so little & sick 😢

boringadvice · 03/03/2020 09:05

@Minnie888 calpol can be given from 2 months/8 weeks now - advice is to give it after 8 week jabs now.

Op, I agree with pp that I wouldn't give calpol unless there's a temp. Turn your shower on (if you have one) and take her in the room, the steam will help with the snot.

TheTiaraManager · 03/03/2020 11:24

Calpol plug ins are amazing!
Saline drops really help unclog tiny noses
Take her into the bathroom and use lots of steam to unclog her nose. Do it as soon as she's up and ideally before each feed
Snuggle baby
