What a load of rubbish. We are not our isolated instances of loss of control. Children see the bigger picture and a loss of temper by a sleep deprived mum is not going to affect how our kids see us. I hate things like that. The only people who might benefit from this (the out and out abusers) wouldn't give a toss about it. It's why I no longer support the NSPCC.

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2007 19:53

"As for the rest of it, I am shocked that you feel the need to "be reminded"

Dumbledoresgirl - forgive me but I do think you are missing the point (that sounds a bit rude, but isn't meant to be). This isn't a film exclusively for those who do really heinous things like batter their wives etc - I doubt a 2 minute film is going to mend their ways.

I don't think it's a literal message saying don't batter your wife etc, interpretation is required. You are supposed to interpret it relative to your own situation and apply it to your own particular issues. Namely we all (at least those of us who are human and honest about it) do some slightly antisocial and undesirable things at times, and it's good to reflect on the repercussions of these. We ought to have an awareness of our weaknesses and aim to reign these in particularly in front of our easily influenced children. I forget this responsibility sometimes as I am sure others do. Really can't understand your 'shocked' comment

"Children see the bigger picture and a loss of temper by a sleep deprived mum is not going to affect how our kids see us."

Mog I agree! - unless of course it is happening frequently.

Sorry hmc, I may have missed some bits and am ready to accept I may be off the point. The vomiting bit put me off the rest and anyway, my pc couldn't upload it quick enough and so the film get sticking. I only saw people doing anti-social things eg shouting at others, dropping litter, ignoring others needing help etc, and I just felt that none of it applied to me. I would watch again and post something a bit more to the point but I can't watch the vomiting scene again.

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2007 19:58

Sure, I understand completely. I know you are an emet..emit? -aphobe (however it is spelt! )

fillyjonk · 31/08/2007 19:58

oh i feel the need to be reminded, definately. I don't smoke or drink or shout at phone boxes, but still, the general message that kids are learning from us 24/7 is still very valid

To start with, given that our family doesn't really watch tv, I spend a lot too long on 'tinternet.

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2007 19:59

So much more succinct than my waffle fillyjonk!

Nightynight · 31/08/2007 20:00

but mog it is not just one instance, many of us have bad habits that children see often and copy.
I also hate the nspcc films and dont support them any more, but I thought this film was pretty relevant actually.

Judy1234 · 31/08/2007 20:03

Yes, they are mirrors to us and the best thing we can do for them is not tell them off and correct them but simply set a good example in how we treat other people. I am sure children learn most tolerance, acceptance, humility and responsibility by observing their parents who are like that.

handlemecarefully · 31/08/2007 20:06

It's good to be able to agree with you sometimes Xenia

fillyjonk · 31/08/2007 20:07

I haven't seen a tv advert in years but what is wrong with the nspcc adverts?

They used to be hard hitting. However they are accurate. If anything, they downplayed the situation in many families.

Something like 1/4 kids suffer abuse, I can take a bit of discomfort if it helps adults clarify where the lines should be drawn, and thusly saves a few kids from this.

Pennies · 31/08/2007 20:08

I am so conscious of what my children learn from my every move. I feel terrible when they say or do something that I think is learnt bad behaviour. I'm not talking big things either just things that my dds repeat back, often in playtalk which stun me. An excellent vid.

TheArmadillo · 31/08/2007 20:09

I did not like the scene with the woman screaming at the baby. Thought that was really unnecessary. Most people have been pushed to the limits with sleep deprivation and have yelled at the baby maybe once or twice. I would think anyone witnessing that should be more concerned for the mother's mental health.

Apart from that - powerful sequence, but is it really going to work on those it's targeted at, honestly. Cos I don't think it will make a bit of difference to the majority of abusers.

TheArmadillo · 31/08/2007 20:11

oh I see mog has said something similar, but worded it better - I agree with Mog.

That'll teach me to read the thread properly next time

VeniVidiVickiQV · 31/08/2007 20:26

this is a much more worthwhile video to watch

It shows the impact of children watching too much television.

Not for the easily shocked......

LOL at that Lollipop video.
Has to be the gayest song I have heard since "YMCA".

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/09/2007 14:55

My two love it though

Every car journey "mumma, we want lollipop. Lollipop, Lollipop, Lollipop".

UnquietDad · 01/09/2007 15:19

Why does he sing about "big girls" when everyone knows girls don't do it for him? This must be that same "fictional persona" which enabled James "Tool" Blunt to go clubbing in 1973 a year before he was born, and Bryan Adams to acquire a six-string from the five-and-dime at the age of 10.

DynamicNanny · 01/09/2007 15:56

That is an extremley powerful video - makes you think doesn't it?

Pinkchampagne · 01/09/2007 16:13

That was very powerful & pretty disturbing.

Aitch · 01/09/2007 16:23

lololol at the mika song... at least they weren't out mugging old ladies.
and i think the other one is very good, apart from the cot scene. i agree with whoever said it should have been intercut with nicer attributes, though, i did feel rather scolded for things i haven't done.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 01/09/2007 21:27

UQD - I'm not sure it matters much, but, he could be referring to his 'type'.....
