Slight grey tinge around baby’s top lip?

Like a five o’clock shadow.
Worse after feeding and when he’s windy.

I’m going to call the GP tomorrow and get an appointment but wondered if anyone else had experience of this?

He’s fine in himself, lots of dirty and wet nappies, feeding well, content.

Take off his clothes and check his breathing. In a baby who is struggling to breath you will see their abdominal muscles going in and out. You can see videos on YouTube. If this is the case then you need to go to A and E.

Genehuntssexyhands · 15/01/2020 18:31

I've checked that, no sucking in under the rib cage. I showed the midwife and she said it was wind? But I don't really understand how wind can make the skin colour change

It's true- grey tinge is often a sign of wind

JustALittleHistory · 15/01/2020 18:33

Yeah mine got that when windy, couple of burps sorts it right out. I am guessing it is an oxygen circulation thing from clenching preburp! If at all relevant I had gigantic greedy babies Grin

I do second PP that you should keep a good eye on breathing and any blueness should be fleeting or get investigated just to be sure.

randominternetperson · 15/01/2020 18:33

Bizarrely mine both used to do this when windy, when they'd burped they pinked back up again.
However, it goes without saying to seek actual medical advice, check for rashes, normal breathing, temp etc don't take anecdotal advice off random internet people...

AfterSchoolWorry · 15/01/2020 18:34

Wind !

Genehuntssexyhands · 15/01/2020 18:34

Hmm okay, I will keep a close eye on it. It seemed to start when we started combo feeding and he got windier, which lined up with what the midwife said but I'd never heard of it before and seeing it there really bothers me. I think I will definitely go to the GP tomorrow and get them to check his chest/breathing etc and show them pictures of it.

Yep mine always got a bluey grey tinge when newborn and struggling with wind!

Genehuntssexyhands · 15/01/2020 18:35

@randominternetperson of course, I would never rely on a diagnosis from online. I was just curious as to whether the 'wind' thing was well known, I intend to get him checked out

I remember mine having this but you are absolutely right to ask a professional.

Genehuntssexyhands · 15/01/2020 18:37

those who had it with wind, did it happen frequently or only occasionally? He does have louder breathing sometimes after feeding, but midwife has witnessed this and said it's normal periodic breathing as it's short lived and settles.
I will mention all this to GP though and I'm going to keep tabs on his breathing and colour and go to a&e immediately if anything doesn't seem right

My 3 week old gets this too - another vote for wind!

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 15/01/2020 18:39

Wind IMO. My DS gets it after any feed if I don't burp

Boyo7 · 15/01/2020 18:42

It's wind, OP. The midwife has already told you this. You don't need a GP.

Genehuntssexyhands · 15/01/2020 18:42

I'm looking for any articles online that say wind has this effect but can;t find anything, so maybe it's just anecdotal. I've messaged pics to my midwife again to ask if I need to get it checked out tonight, she's very good at replying.

JustALittleHistory · 15/01/2020 18:44

Mine had it a lot, usually towards end of feed although eldest did struggle to latch properly to begin with so would need extra burp sessions throughout, pink up then back to feeding - that switched to just end of feed once latch sorted out.

timeforawine · 15/01/2020 18:45

My baby had a blue tint for months as she never winded very well, when she started sitting it faded away

Genehuntssexyhands · 15/01/2020 18:45

@boyo7 I don't want to waste the GPs time, but it's this combined with the sometimes noisy breathing that's bothering me. I will explain what the midwife has said when I call them, and then they can see if they think it's worth me coming in.

Grey blue tinge is wind but if you are in doubt get it checked. Mother knows best

longestlurkerever · 15/01/2020 18:46

Op Google "blue around mouth baby wind" and lots comes up. I agree it seems weird but it's definitely a thing.

Genehuntssexyhands · 15/01/2020 18:46

I think I'm worried because people are saying their babies 'pinked up' after burping, and although it gets less pronounced, I can still see it a bit. Although DH says he can't see it so I don't know if I'm obsessing! He's very fair, so anything like that is going to be more noticeable - ie his veins and things are very obvious because his skin is so light.

thanks for replies. Sorry if I sound a bit mad! I'm admittedly, very PFB at the moment

You don't sound mad, you're just doing your job Grin

Genehuntssexyhands · 15/01/2020 18:49

ah thanks @justalittlehistory I didn't expect to be this neurotic!
