Dressing your baby!

I'm a new mum to a 5 week old little girl, and I'm just curious about how everyone dresses their babies! I love onesies, I think they're really sweet, easy washed - no ironing required, built in scratch mitts and easy to take off and on when my lo does explosives poos!

But... People keep gifting us little outfits. And I feel clueless! If she wears little leggings how on earth do you keep socks on a baby?! Is she meant to wear baby shoes with them? And how is anyone bothered ironing tiny dresses and tiny tops?!

90% certain I'm going to dress her in onesies until she's about 9 months!

DS is a year and still mainly wears long/short sleeve vests with a sleeveless vest underneath if it's chilly, leggings and cardigans. He crawled and cruised early and I found babygrows got in his way and then he learned to pull poppers open....

I"m 11weeks up the road from you, also with a little girl.

She was in short sleeve vests and baby grows only, up until 6 weeks old, where she started to fit into 0-3 month clothes. People had got her outfits, which (lucky for me) were all legging and top/tunic combos, which were relatively easy to put on her. Never really had too much of an issue with socks, but I might be in the minority.

She's now in 3-6 month clothes, and presents if dress + tights combos have entered the mix.... The rights are ok, if slightly Nora Batty-esque, but the dresses ride up all day long. They're super cute, and look gorgeous, but quite honestly, I wish I had more top + legging combos.

Jeans/anything denim/anything corduroy I would ask to be sent back. They're just too stiff, have zero stretch and are an absolute pain to put on.

Don't bother with ironing.

I like putting my girl in outfits, just to help break up the day for her. Hopefully it helps her recognise that baby grows are for night time sleep. It's the closest thing we have to a routine, getting her out of her day clothes and into a baby grow anyway.

opens an umbrella
I like headbands. I get they're not practical in any way shape or form, but they're so sweet. 🥰

Babygros till 6mo. Outfits are pointless before then.

My 12 month old grandson is in (2/3 piece) outfits for going out otherwise he’s in a onesie because it’s comfortable for him and easier for me not to mention keeps the laundry pile down a bit! He was shouting today in frustration because he couldn’t get his leg onto his regular chair because his trousers were too restrictive 😂

My ds was born in the june heatwave in 2018 so beyond the hospital spent most of his first few weeks in a tshirt and nappy! He wore baby grows 9 or vests of varying sleeve/leg lengths at night and most of the time until he was 8 weeks old. Then I tended to put him in vests with soft trousers/leggings on. I didnt have issues with socks coming off until he was about a year.

To be fair, ds was a super (happy) sicky baby until 6 months so at one point we were going through 5 outfits (and about 10 mussies) a day so he tended to wear at least one baby grow every day. I had some lovely patterned ones and he looked delicious in a grow ❤

The only time I have ironed ds clothes was when I was still pregnant with him Blush

ITS probably easier for you to put your little one in pretty dresses etc now rather than later as they're a nightmare for crawling, they just get in the way!

Thanks everyone! I think some outfits will go on to let the giver see her wearing it and then they can go. Until she's bigger I'm sticking with babygrows/onesies and leggings! She does have some nice wee tunic/dresses but she's still so small that they look silly on her.

With my first, everyone spoiled her with tons of outfits. She was an amazing baby as well and everybody offered to have her, so when she stayed overnight at their house, I'd send some of the outfits they bought her so they could see her in them and get the cute photos they obviously had in mind when they bought her the clothes. I'd dress her up if she was going to a party or we were going out for a meal with family or were visiting people we don't see often, but I wanted her to be as comfortable as possible so baby grows until she was six months and then leggings and tops. I never bothered with socks as she would pull them straight back off and would scream if I even went near her with tights. She's three and still screams if I try and approach her with tights, and it's a battle every day to get her to put socks on for nursery. We usually end up down the road of the sooner you put them on, the sooner they can come off, and that does the trick.

I did the same with my twins and I'm doing the same with my triplets, but my sons seem to love wearing socks while my girls all hated it. They cry if I don't cover their feet but the girls will happily sleep with their feet uncovered by their blankets or socks Confused. I just don't see the point of wasting money on nice outfits they'll fit in for a few weeks before growing out of them. I'd rather spend money on the clothes once they stop growing too quickly and can actually get some wear out of the clothes!

With my first I felt under a lot of pressure to put her in outfits. My second child is now coming up to 5 months and is mainly in babygrows and sometimes joggers/soft jeans with a top or jumper and a vest underneath. It’s when we go to baby groups that I see most babies are in outfits.

Maybe it’s because I’m now a second time mum but I cannot be bothered with outfits.

99bb · 31/12/2019 08:30

@Tobebythesea this.

First one was in top and bottoms somewhere around 4 months, I think. Second one won’t be out of sleepsuits for ages. They’re comfy, it’s easy, there is no benefit to anyone In a baby fashion show. Anyone who wants to go with proper clothes, it’s their choice, but I’m 100% practical about it this time
