Dressing your baby!

I'm a new mum to a 5 week old little girl, and I'm just curious about how everyone dresses their babies! I love onesies, I think they're really sweet, easy washed - no ironing required, built in scratch mitts and easy to take off and on when my lo does explosives poos!

But... People keep gifting us little outfits. And I feel clueless! If she wears little leggings how on earth do you keep socks on a baby?! Is she meant to wear baby shoes with them? And how is anyone bothered ironing tiny dresses and tiny tops?!

90% certain I'm going to dress her in onesies until she's about 9 months!

Three children here- all in baby grows till they were 3 months. Then tights and jersey dresses ect on the girls and joggers and long sleeve tops and socks on the boys. All nice and soft

Sexnotgender · 26/12/2019 19:57

Sleepsuits all the way!! DS is 10.5 months now and we’ve been doing little soft joggers (he’s in cloth nappies so leggings don’t work) dungarees etc. recently. He was pretty much exclusively in sleepsuits until 5/6 months.

Tights below leggings means they can't pull them off like they do with socks 😃

DC1 was bought loads of outfits spent my whole time faffing with them, getting the marks out of them, ironing them and taking photos for other people's benefit

DC2 was bought a few outfits, barely wore them and lived almost exclusively in onesies

DC3 was bought onesies, only wore outfits about 3x in first 6 months

And they all ended up wearing T-shirt's, hoodies and tracksuit bottoms in varying shades of black, grey and navy blue, even my DD despite my best efforts. I love Them in bright colours but they end up looking like a advert for Gap jeans

Bipbipbipbip · 26/12/2019 20:37

My DS has always worn little leggings/joggers and t-shirts/jumpers. I found the poppers on baby gros to be a hassle! I absolutely loved rompers the first summer though. So easy! I have never ironed anything he wears and unless we go to a wedding, funeral or christening any time soon I can't see that changing!

Lilkat · 26/12/2019 20:40

Might try her in leggings now to avoid the poppers! She's quite long so the leggings we'd been given were short on her, and they did make her look like she had wee chicken legs!

Going to get an order in for sock ons and see how we do, I don't know if I could manage faffing with tights all the time - it's probably just because I hate wearing them myself!

Tried putting a wee pinafore on her tonight for going to my MIL's (spoilt her with lots of clothes, not all my style) but she looked vaguely amish, the tights were a faff and she wriggles so much they were sliding off her 🙄 took them off and went back to a babygrow!

Before I had a baby, i would have bought cute outfits. And I wouldn’t have considered what season they would be at the age of the outfit. Having had a baby, I’ll only buy vests and babygrows for young babies ! My 5 month old is only starting to wear clothes now out and about (still a grow if we are staying in) and then it’s just jogging bottom/leggings and a top over a vest. If I had a girl, I’d do the same. So much easier than being all trussled up! Few cute outfits for a special occasion maybe.

DappledThings · 26/12/2019 23:43

Dungarees all the way. I couldn't be bothered with all the faffy poppers on sleepsuits very early on. Never understood why people like them so much. DC1 was out of them except at night at about 4 weeks and DC2 at about a fortnight.

Much prefer long sleeve bodysuits and dungarees or joggers.

Sock-ons, as previously mentioned, are brilliant.

BillyAndTheSillies · 27/12/2019 00:05

Lindex do awesome all in ones that zip instead of poppers, as do Gap.

Both my DS's have large feet so baby grows never seemed to fit them and if I sized up they looked humongous everywhere else.

Ds2 is 12 weeks and mainly in leggings with t shirts or jumpers but he's also in lots of wool two pieces. If we aren't really going anywhere or if I'll have him in the sling with a baby wearing suit he'll wear one of the Lindex zip up baby grows.

Both of them wore sleep dresses at night because I hate poppers so much.

Grandmi · 27/12/2019 00:11

My daughter has used babygrows for a few weeks but the poppers are such a pain in the arse !! Go for leggings and a top ...so much easier on the brain!!

Ambrose2 · 27/12/2019 08:04

I do all the leg poppers up first which means there's only a few left to do once it's on

Sexnotgender · 27/12/2019 08:08

Oh yes zip up baby grows are the dream.

I’ve got several bonds wondersuits which have a 2 way zip.

drspouse · 27/12/2019 08:08

I used a lot of leggings over cute vests, I liked footed leggings and vests with pictures.
DD was a baby in a heat wave and just wore cute vests.

Lilkat · 27/12/2019 17:54

Returned some of the outfits we were given today and got a couple of pairs of leggings and some long sleeved vests! She is growing out of her 1 month babygrows not weight wise, but because her legs and feet are so long!

Next dilemma is how a bald baby is meant to wear a headband - think we're just chucking it 😂

OP posts:
Sleepyquest · 27/12/2019 18:13

@Lilkat I hate the headbands, it's obvious my baby is a girl, she doesn't need a massive bow on her head to show that!

Somuchtoshowyou · 27/12/2019 18:19

I don’t understand the headband thing.

Are people that worried people will think their baby girl is a boy?

Sexnotgender · 27/12/2019 18:32

I bloody hate headbands, they look absolutely ridiculous.

Elephantshoe · 27/12/2019 18:35

Haha! Bin the headband, in my experience they never stayed on (TBH, I only tried once). If I had my time again, I'd never have bothered with "real" clothes until 9m - 12m and would have just left both DCs in onesies the whole time.
They're easy, cheap and comfy

Chipmonkeypoopoo · 27/12/2019 18:44

Ι like poppered short and long sleeved vests and trousers/leggings. We live in a country where the temps fluctuate wildly at different times of day so it's nice to be able to take bits on and off. We are slowly moving on to tshirts and leggings/trousers. Again, I like to be able to take trousers off if it gets too hot.

ThePurpleMoose · 27/12/2019 18:52

Another one for onesies most of the time - my 7mo lives in them usually unless we're going out for some occasion. She does look very cute in proper clothes but they're so much more faff.

With tights/leggings she's often got the first foot out by the time you've got the second foot in Grin We've had some success getting socks to stay on by tucking the leggings in but even so they usually end up half hanging off. Dresses drive me up the wall because they ride up no matter what you do. I think when she's starting to walk I'll put her in outfits more but for now they're usually more trouble than they're worth!

Lilkat · 27/12/2019 19:02

@sexnotgender I know someone who put headbands on her daughter because people kept thinking she was a little boy. I couldn't care less, I think most babies just look like babies, especially when they're so young and baldies like my wee one!

OP posts:
Lilkat · 27/12/2019 19:05

Sorry meant to tag @somuchtoshowyou in that last comment!

Also, why can't there ever be consistency in sizes... Not even for babies! The Next 0-3 months stuff fits her now with room to grow and not look ridiculous, the M&S 0-3 is massive!

SexlessBoulderBelly · 27/12/2019 19:06

Due to have my little one on Tuesday. All the woman in my family I’ve spoken to have said that as babies we absolutely lived in onesies/sleep suits. Unless they went out for a meal or to an occasion, when they would then put an outfit on them, then it was all just sleepsuits.

Yes frilly dresses and outfits look cute, but can you imagine spending most of your day led in that with no way to adjust yourself compared to a onesie?

I know what I’d rather. Comfort over anything for DD when she arrives.

SexlessBoulderBelly · 27/12/2019 19:07

Ah the headbands.. hate them.

Someone has kindly gifted me a headband with a HUGE bow on it and I plan to stick it on her, take a photo, send to person who gifted it and take it straight off. They are truly horrendous.

TheClausSeason · 27/12/2019 19:10

Beat advice I got on here was just to let them live in babygrows/onesies until one. Just keep on doing what you're doing.
