Moving baby to the seat of pram

My son is nearly 4 months. He has silent reflux and hates laying down, he is also extremely nosy. So he rarely stays in the bassinet of his pram without screaming. I am considering when I can move him to the seat of the pram which is meant to be 6+ months. He is a big baby, already 16lbs (probably more I need to get him weighed) and has great head control and with help can sit up too. Would it be ok to use the seat now so he can look around a bit and not lay flat ?

I considered buying a newborn insert but it only goes up to 20lbs so would be quite a waste !

It’s an UppaBaby Cruz and he’s nearly grown out of the bassinet anyway.

Appreciate anyone else’s experience of this ! Thank you.

I would say yes, you could use blankets to prop him up if you like. My pushchair was 4 months.

SoyDora · 06/11/2019 09:51

We have the vista and I bought the newborn insert for DS at around the same age and for the same reasons.
He’s 10 months now and still not 20lbs (and he’s not particularly small) so I feel like it was worth the money.
I found without the insert, even though he had great head control, he’d slump after a while and look uncomfortable.

Magpiefeather · 06/11/2019 09:51

I didn’t until mine could sit unaided, but I understand with reflux it must be horribly uncomfortable for him to lie down all the time. Does your “upright” seat recline? I would possibly try it reclined as much as possible, so his head doesn’t loll sitting properly upright, and do the straps nice and tightly.

I can’t see why you couldn’t use the insert post 20lbs anyway to be honest.

Happycow · 06/11/2019 09:53

Personally i would move them into the seat. I dont even think i checked weight guidance etc when i moved DS, just when he got more inquisitive and resistant to being dead flat.

Id say as long as the seat restraints, buckles etc allow your DC to be secure i would move up. I dont know any 6 month onld who would be happy laying flat in a pram!

LittleTopic · 06/11/2019 09:56

We moved DD at 4 months and kept her on the more reclined setting so she wasn’t sitting totally upright. She is long, and was rolling over, and I felt more secure with her being strapped in! She had brilliant head control though, which helped.

Caspianberg · 06/11/2019 09:58

Can you add a small baby pillow to the carrycot part so he is wedged up a bit?

BellaNutella88 · 06/11/2019 10:31

Thanks all for all your replies. @Magpiefeather I’m almost certain it does recline quite far back, I’ll test it today.

@SoyDora I think I might try him in it and if he looks uncomfortable I’ll get the newborn insert then. I don’t mind getting it- I’ve just wasted so much money trying to help his reflux ha!

He can roll onto his side and does that in his sleep now and he’s really trying to go over fully but he can’t just get. He’s currently sat in a bumbo type seat and sits well in that and is really trying to pull himself forward when I lay him down

Tbf his reflux is more under control now with medication. I think he just gets bored and nosey now laying down. He can manage ten minutes with his toy hanging down and then he goes nuts in the middle of shops!

Just need to buy a rather expensive footmuff now to match :’(

Really appreciate your replies xx

@Caspianberg a baby pillow could work! I’ll look on amazon. Oh I love amazon haha.

SoyDora · 06/11/2019 10:39

Yeah give it a try and see how he goes.
I’m using our vista for our third baby now and have never had the official uppababy footmufff, I’ve got a ‘buggysnuggle’ (I think it’s called) that has lasted all three children!

SoyDora · 06/11/2019 10:40

Ignore that, I’ve looked up ‘buggy snuggle’ and it doesn’t exist so can’t be that Grin. It’s a lovely thick fleece one anyway.

BellaNutella88 · 06/11/2019 10:41

@SoyDora I’ll look that up! It’s just the colour of the pram is a denim blue colour that doesn’t seem to match the universal ones. Not that it really matters I guess !

Glad to hear it’s lasted well. I’m going to keep ours just in case we have a second. I keep saying nomore but am still saving everything haha.

Yes we did, our boy was still very little and we moved him into the seat at 5 months - I don’t remember what he weighed but it wasn’t much. I propped him up to support him - he had good head control but couldn’t sit unaided - and had him facing me still so I could keep an eye on him.
He has silent reflux and also squealed in his pram.
He’s 17lbs now (at 7 months). It was a new lease of life for us both putting him in the buggy, definitely glad I did it.

BellaNutella88 · 06/11/2019 16:31

@Abouttimemum ahh thanks for your reply. I was about to buy the snugseat today but my local John Lewis was out of stock. So I thought I’ll just try him before I order it. I just did and he looks pretty sturdy in it so will briefly use it tomorrow and will only order the snugseat if he looks uncomfortable. DS did smile a lot when I put him in the chair just now.

When did your little one grow out of his silent reflux ? Just curious as my DS is still on medication and seeing the paediatrician next week! X

I moved my daughter up at 4 months - she loved it and had no issues (she also had good head control).

BellaNutella88 · 06/11/2019 18:01

Ah thanks @NewMum293 ! That’s reassuring :-). Will test it out properly tomorrow but will take the carrier just in case !

Moved DS at 4 mo as he wasn't keen on the carrycot. He loved it, even nearly reclined all the way back. He actually smiled and then napped brilliantly.

Not even an expensive pram. 'just' mothercar3e

Abouttimemum · 06/11/2019 18:54

@BellaNutella88 He’s still omeprozole (which changed our life lol) but just after we last saw his consultant the pharmacy messed up the order and we had to go the whole weekend without it and he was fine until the Sunday night when he started getting agitated. We still give him it but we next see the consultant in January and I suspect they’ll wean him off it, especially now he’s on solids and can sit a bit better.
Silent reflux is absolutely hideous so I hope he’s growing out of it!

BellaNutella88 · 06/11/2019 18:59

@Abouttimemum not sure if this has tagged or not! That’s what my DS is on! He is so much better and we was considering asking next week about trying to wean him off but very nervous about doing so as it could just be the medicine helping ! And we had to fight so hard to get it in the first place.

Silent reflux is absolutely awful ! I feel like I missed out on really enjoying the newborn phase, I’ve wished it away :-(. Glad your little one is doing better now he is a bit older xx

God I know, it’s like last on their list of things to try and we had to basically demand it. We couldn’t put him down at all for weeks and weeks, it truly was a terrible time. It’s horrible seeing them suffer so much but also absolutely exhausting.
Maybe you could try a reduced dose for a while and see how he is on that before taking it away completely? I don’t think there’s any rush but I agree you don’t want them on medication unless they have to be!

Abouttimemum · 06/11/2019 19:21

@BellaNutella88 it wouldn’t let me tag you that time!!

thunderthighsohwoe · 06/11/2019 21:16

My refluxy baby was in the seat unit from two weeks old; it was reclined ‘flat’, but even on that setting was tilted up enough that she wasn’t totally flat so the reflux bothered her less. We had a newborn insert and it lasted ages so may well be worth the money.

Same as you, carrycot attachment caused screaming until she was even more sick! She never once slept in it 🤦🏻‍♀️

BellaNutella88 · 07/11/2019 07:59

@Abouttimemum I know, it’s so frustrating that doctors won’t properly deal with it unless they are hounded. Very hard time ! Yea I think we would lower the dosage bit by bit. He’s kinda outgrowing the dose as well as we haven’t upped it in 3 weeks. Hope it goes well for your little one coming off of it ! There’s a group on FB I’ve found really helpful called babies with reflux and silent reflux.

@thunderthighsohwoe we buy all these things and then the baby hates them haha. I tried my little one yesterday without the insert and he looked pretty sturdy so am going to give it a brief test today but will take my carrier with me so I can put him in that if needed. I’ll order the insert if needed after that.

I moved mine early for the same reason. You can get baby body supports that really help and are only 15 quid, like this one www.amazon.co.uk/JJ-Cole-Adjustable-Support-Stroller/dp/B00P1B9A7M/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?keywords=jj+cole+baby+support&sprefix=jj+coles+baby&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1573113721&sr=8-6 . From memory I kept using it past 6 months so I got my money's worth.

bubblegumunicorn · 07/11/2019 08:18

Do you have a car seat that can clip in to the frame? We use the car seat a lot because our LO doesn't like to be flat and likes to see what's going on it could be a temporary work around!
