Hi,

So i know little ones not supposed to wear a coat in the car. What do you do when its freezing out? To get too and from the car?

OP posts:

As others have said it's not new advice. My dd is 13 and has been around since she was a baby.

Greatnorthwoods · 29/10/2019 17:24

It's not -20C in the car. Unless your car heater is broken.

At -20C it takes a very long time for the heater to begin working, given that most our winter travel is either using a snowmobile or driving on single track unpaved roads. Cold is the bigger risk.

xraytangocharlie · 29/10/2019 17:25

I've heard it all now.

It’s been -20 in my car before. Last winter DD had a Patagonia coat that was sold as car seat safe and it passed the slack test recommended by the paediatrician (car seat lady website is a good resource for tips on warm dressing for the car). The heater takes a long time to kick in at v low temps, especially for the time before you drive away but kids are buckled in- when you are de-icing the car or digging it out of a snow drift for instance.
We have a new car coming this weekend and it’s going to have remote start, I’m so excited!

Linnylinn1 · 29/10/2019 17:33

@Greatnorthwoods with all due respect we are talking about cars not snowmobiles 🙄

00100001 · 29/10/2019 17:37

"Coats and/or snow suits are worn in the car, at -20C cold is the bigger risk."

So you wait for the car to heat up and THEN strap your kids in safely...

Why would you listen to and accept advice about wearing seatbelts in general, but completely ignore the specific advice that could prevent your child from dying in the event of a collision??
If that's a risk you're willing to take, then you do that.

But to suggest that what you're doing is safe is the same as saying It's ok for my child to sleep in a cot with bumpers, the risk of them maybe bumping their head is a bigger risk than them being dead.

ClientListQueen · 29/10/2019 17:40

Just get a blanket meant for in car seats like one of those star ones

morriseysquif · 29/10/2019 18:28

A poncho is ideal!

mamandematribu · 29/10/2019 18:55

I think your all taking this a bit too personally.

BiggestJulie · 29/10/2019 20:15

@mamandematribu

no one is taking this personally. Folks are simply reminding other Mumsnet users that if you do not use car seats correctly, they won’t protect kids (babies/toddlers/bigger kids) in the event of an accident.

Put your kid/toddler/infant in a winter coat, and strap her into a car seat, then you might as well not bother. Just bung her in the back and let her crawl around, because she won’t be protected any better than that.

Watch the crash videos. At 30 mph wearing a coat a child will be thrown violently forward from the seat.

No one goes out expecting an accident. You use a car seat for the unexpected.

Use it correctly and it will do its job. The message is simple.

mamandematribu · 30/10/2019 19:07

I'm not a troll. I just think there are more important things in the world than a child or adult wearing a coat in a car seat or with a seatbelt .

00100001 · 30/10/2019 19:25

@mamandematribu Well what’s more import than the safety of your child?

You are choosing not to safely restrain your child... you are choosing to put their life at risk.

Pretty important I’d say.

Fair enough if you didn’t know before this thread. But despite evidence that shows you that children in padded coats are not safe in car seats.... you know better because your children are obviously an exception to the laws of physics. :/

00100001 · 30/10/2019 19:27

Most parents would be horrified if they realised this and would maybe ask questions and change... it’s utterly bizarre that in the face of actual evidence, that a parent would dismiss it so easily...

BarbourellaTheCoatzilla · 30/10/2019 19:52

I hate wearing a coat in the car even in the cold. Bulky and gets in the way. Same with kids car seats. If you car is made in this decade then surely the heating suffices?!

Looneytune253 · 30/10/2019 21:54

@mamandematribu may as well just not bother with the car seats or seatbelts then? No safety measures in the home. Turn off your smoke alarms, there's more important things to worry about. This is hilarious (but also at the same time very chilling) that you don't care at all

drspouse · 30/10/2019 22:59

Perhaps maman is also immune to gravity since the other laws of physics don't apply. Just push the children off a building! They will float!

tentedthings · 31/10/2019 09:24

No coats in car! What if you've got multiple children and babies asleep. It's already a total faff getting everyone in and out.

drspouse · 31/10/2019 09:26

Such a faff to do their seatbelts too. Why bother?

SoyDora · 31/10/2019 09:29

Who wants to freeze in a car in winter?

I imagine if I asked them my children would say they’d rather freeze in the car in winter than die in the car in winter because their coats meant that their seat belts weren’t restraining them effectively enough to protect them in the event of a crash.

57Varieties · 31/10/2019 09:32

Surely you can just walk from your house to the car without your coat on? Unless you have a
Long walk to the car, surely for most people though it’s only a few steps? Or take the coat off when you get to the car?

Can people really not work this out for themselves without having to ask mumsnet?

Linnylinn1 · 31/10/2019 09:46

@tentedthings I don’t understand the question?? Surely then you just teach each child to take their coat off at the car?! As for babies asleep, Mine never slept with their coats on Confused

SoyDora · 31/10/2019 09:48

tentedthings I’ve got three children including a 9 month old and we manage it ok.

00100001 · 31/10/2019 10:49

@tentedthings - oh yes, complete faff... definitely worth risking your child's life for. I'm sure that will provide comfort to those whose children have died in car crashes as a result of not being properly restrained ... "Don't feel bad, taking their coat off would have been such a faff"

Bol87 · 31/10/2019 14:16

Why do people find this so hard? Most people park near their houses. Pop a fleece or thick cardigan on and get them into the car. Pop a blanket or two on them. Then simply put the padded coat in the boot/seat. When you arrive at your destination, get them out the car & put the coat on them?! Why is that hard?! Again, when you’ve finished at your destination, put their coat on & walk them to the car. Remove the coat, pop the fleece on if needed, blanket and away you go?!

I don’t wear a padded coat in the car either, it gets hot in about 6 minutes and then I’m sweating!

And to all those rolling their eyes & saying they know better than the experts, let’s hope you don’t crash. Just watch the videos and decide if you fancy risking serious injury to your kid for the sake of removing a coat. Grow up.
