Real nappies and a newborn?

Lucyand2 · 15/08/2007 11:16

I use motherease one size on my Dd but I didn't start using them until she was a couple of months old as they were just too big.
I'm pregnant again and I really want to use cloth nappies from the start this time, so could anyone recommend good nappies for newborns?
Thankyou!

I used muslins and a nippa and some size 0 wraps on DD for the first few weeks.

(also I have a load of bamboozles that seem to have shrunk to smaller than size 1 if you want to buy some second hand ones )

curlywurlycremeegg · 15/08/2007 11:23

I have to say muslins look so sweet on a newborn but didn't last DS2 long as he soon became a power weeer! I like Swaddlebees organic velour sized nappies but the can work out expensive. Nature Babies Diddy Diapers are a good cheap alternative for a shaped newborn nappy

Lucyand2 · 15/08/2007 11:53

I must admit that I'm not too keen on the idea of muslins, I'd prefer to stick with something shaped like my motherease nappies. Mostly because I'm lazy!

I used Bambino Mio on my 2 DDs, they fit nicely for tiny bottoms.

WE used size 0 Bimbles and Kissaluvs with DD when she was born and they were great. I'm 10 weeks pg now and already looking forward to getting them out again!!

makesachange · 15/08/2007 13:42

Kissaluvs are adorable, but I would actually recommend terries! We have the tiny 40cm squares which are really soft. You don't need to do complicated folds or anything, unless you want to (and actually they're dead easy) or you can just fold them into a rectangle and use like a pad.

The brilliant thing is that they're dirt cheap (use the mumsnet discount to get another 10% off - code "mumsnet" at checkout) and you will use them for squillions of things afterwards - they're always handy for window cleaning, floor wiping, posset cloths, boosting, etc etc.

Another nice nappy for a newborn, if pricey, is the Swaddlebees organic cotton newborn nappy. It's not a cheap option but it's lovely.

That all aside, if you use two size nappies (like most 2 part nappies) then they usually fit even small babies - especially the nippa versions which are very adjustable. Mother-ease nappies aren't always a great solution because as you've found, they don't tend to fit the smallest babies and largest toddlers. I do like them very much but they're not the solution for everyone.

I got Sandy's size 1 as wel as the one size nappies when DD1 was born 5 years ago and intend to use them for DD2 in 8 weeks time. I am planning on using the Sandy's and one size during the day and tots bots at night.

makesachange · 15/08/2007 13:57

Sandy's are a good choice - again, being a multi size nappy, always a better fit than a one size at birth.

Lucyand2 · 15/08/2007 15:00

Thankyou for all the suggestions, I became a bit of nappy addict whilst finding out about them first time round, and I suspect the same will happen again!
Luckily my in-laws bought my first birth to potty set so I'm hoping they'll chip in for my next set! If not I'll be using my maternity grant and as I'll sell them on after I'm not too fussed about the price. It is really nice to have some suggestions to work from so I don't get completely confused!
It's so sad, I'm actually excited about buying more nappies!

ohh yes, I forgot Sandy's in extra small, they are lovely and so under rated

Lucyand2 · 15/08/2007 15:20

Just started trawling through some of the links I saved from last time and I think I may be addicted all over again. But which to choose? And I'm not even due until feb, oh dear...

The ME Sandys are also coming in Bamboo soon. Cute fluff which is even softer and lovlier than the cotton ones!

Lucyand2 · 15/08/2007 20:18

Just been looking at the diddy diapers and they look very cute and not too pricey.
Can I use my ME wraps with them? Are they any good?

OP posts:
curlywurlycremeegg · 15/08/2007 20:59

They are fine with a motherease wrap and work well, not great for heavy wetters but will last you well until your LO is big enough to go into the one size you already have

maisiemog · 15/08/2007 21:32

I agree with the flat nappy advice, newborn/small terries or prefolds are pretty handy and cheap for a little baby. I haven't tried muslins, but I'm not sure about the absorbency on babies over a couple of week.
We used prefolds folded in the angel fold with a nappi nippa if you look on my nappy blog he is at the bottom of the page with his nippa'd prefolds on, and there's one of him in a size one diddy diaper as well.
The really cool thing about flats is for the price of one fitted nappy, you get about four or five flat nappies, and they dry fast, so you don't run out or worry about running out.
We used cotton bottoms newborn wraps on our diddy son, which fitted around his legs really well, I don't remember any leaks out of the wrap. Mind you he was only in them until he was about 10lbs, so it might be a better to get the small which I think lasts up to around 14lbs.
Congratulations on your forthcoming baby.

Lucyand2 · 16/08/2007 10:20

Thankyou for the link maisiemog, what a great website! It is really nice to see all the different kins of nappies actually on a baby!

maisiemog · 16/08/2007 20:50

Thank you Lucy, I'm glad you liked it.
The only trouble now is that my DS is out of nappies, so I don't have a model. LOL!
Never mind, I have had some gorgeous photos of models donated, so that you can actually see how the nappy looks. It is good to see them actually worn I agree.
Oh and thanks for the reviews.

pinkyminky · 16/08/2007 22:27

Have you tried Diddy Diapers? they fasten with a nippa and have a soft fleecy inner, really nice. They are quite cheap so a good idea if you are moving on to birth to potty later.

pinkyminky · 16/08/2007 22:31

sorry just saw the post about diddy diapers! yes they are good for little babies.

FlameBatfink · 16/08/2007 23:09

Maisie... d'you wanna email me a list of the nappies I was going to do photos of? More likely to get it done then bumfluffnappies at gmail dot com

maisiemog · 16/08/2007 23:36

I'll email tomorrow. Must go to bed. ZZZZZZZZZ

Lucyand2 · 17/08/2007 10:21

I enjoyed commenting maisiemog, I'm so pleased with my amazing wipe in the back of the nappy technique that I like to talk about it whenever possible (a little bit strange I know)
I actually met up with a mum who uses sandys yesterday and she said they take a while to dry so I've gone off those a wee bit. Does anybody know how kissaluvs and diddy diapers dry in comparison?
My ME take all day even on a washing line and 2 days inside, something quicker for a newborn would be nice!
