Baby not poop'd for 9 day..

Hello,

I have a 5 week old baby who hasn't poo'd since last Saturday (9 days ago), her wind is terrible and smelly, and sometimes she seems to have a stomach ache and other times seems fine.
I have rang the health visitors but they haven't called back, and there is a drop in centre that's open tomorrow. But in the meantime, has anyone experienced the same? Anything I can do to help.. move things along?!

Tia!

Take your baby to the gp today. This could be serious.

Breast or bottle fed? Can be normal for breast fed babies

I would call your GP and tell the receptionist what's happened ask if this warrants a same day appt or a call back from a doctor.
I think it does but I might be wrong. None of mine have ever gone longer than 3 days without a no2 so I'd be very very concerned.

letsjog · 14/10/2019 11:40

And all mine have been breast fed.

Pandaintheporridge · 14/10/2019 11:41

I experienced this with ds and after ten days there was an explosion that shook the neighbourhood. He was bf and I think more common in this case. He was unhappy or sore though, he just didn't poo for days.

Pandaintheporridge · 14/10/2019 11:44

Since it's Monday, phone the health visitors again after an hour.
To help - cycling her legs (gently), rubbing tummy, more milk to check she isn't dehydrated.

Meshy23 · 14/10/2019 11:46

Nhs advice itself says it’s normal for a breastfed baby to go for several days without a poo after 6 weeks - a health visitor told me that it’s because there is little waste material in breast milk that needs to be eliminated.

See a GP or health visitor if you are concerned or want reassurance though.

Personally - my breastfed baby went for several days at a time from about 8 weeks. Weaning has changed that though.

InDubiousBattle · 14/10/2019 11:46

Is she bf? My dd went 10 days once and hv said it was fine but to call if she didn't go on day 11. She went on the afternoon of the tenth day and I have honesty never seen more shit either before it or since!

www.nhs.uk/start4life/baby/breastfeeding/breastfeeding-challenges/constipation/

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/nappies/

Link says normal for even a week for breastfed babies from around 6 weeks.

Also, for more reassurance, This says 7-10 days is perfectly normal!

ipfreeley · 14/10/2019 11:59

Thank you everyone! It sounds like I'm in for a shitexplosion imminently! Bc

I rang the health visitor again (I had called early this morning), but she's not available and will call me this afternoon.

Also called the docs and they have added me to the list for the doc to call me back.

I've done a lot of peddling her legs, rubbing belly etc and she feeds approx every 1.5 hours and has wet nappies so I don't think she's dehydrated.

Sorry if I missed it anywhere, but is she breastfed? My breastfed baby would regularly go ten days without a bowel movement- normal as the breastmilk is so perfectly digestible that there's very little undigested material to form a poo IYSWIM?

Meshy23 · 14/10/2019 12:02

Good luck and keep us updated! Also have spare clothes if you are heading out - when it happens it will be a real poonami!

ShanghaiDiva · 14/10/2019 12:05

Agree with pp - if breastfed this is not unusual.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 14/10/2019 12:08

Normal if you're breastfeeding. The poosplosion will be spectacular!

Noroof · 14/10/2019 12:10

If you have a white carpet or rug try leaving her on it with the nappy off. Guaranteed poonamiSmile

dementedpixie · 14/10/2019 12:13

Go out somewhere nice in your best clothes and she'll explode then

purplemunkey · 14/10/2019 12:14

Mine also used to go up to 10 days without a poo when breastfeeding only. It is pretty normal as others say but good to check in with HV or doc fit reassurance - I’m sure I did first time too.

GooseFeather · 14/10/2019 12:16

Normal for BF babies. Await the poonami, it will arrive soon.

Remember - envelope neck vests allow you to peel down from the top, so you don't have to get a shitty vest over her head. Although she is probably going to need a good bath once it happens anyway.

KimchiLaLa · 14/10/2019 12:19

Give her a nice warm bath followed by a coconut oil tummy massage to get things moving.

toddlerdayisfullall · 14/10/2019 12:19

I had similar issue and I was advised to use coconut oil (be generous) on the cotton ball and massage the anus. That worked for us. You can use Vaseline instead. That helps if there is a blockage and requires some lubricant.

RolytheRhino · 14/10/2019 12:20

I will say, bring more than one change of clothes. On a poo day when out and about mine once got through three poonamis in the space of two hours. I swear I spent the entire trip in the mothercare baby changing room. Also bring two packs of wet wipes (you don't want to run out).

MustardScreams · 14/10/2019 12:21

Breast or formula fed? Normal if breastfeeding, cause for concern is formula.

redhotketchup999 · 14/10/2019 12:23

Without fail my kids would poo when you had them lying on their backs, got some vegetable oil as massage oil and used 2 fingers to apply pressure gently and circle round their belly buttons clockwise.
Then alternate with bending their legs and bringing them up to their chest.
Learnt it in baby massage and it’s been very useful!
