Is 5/5.30 too early?

Mine eats somewhere between 5 and 5.30 most nights, used to be 6 but she was too tired and wouldn't eat as much.

MrsSiba · 02/10/2019 14:40

After pre school I was feeding my lg at 4pm as she would eat well then give her something snacky around 6.30 eg fruit, yogurt.

Now she is in reception she eats around 4.30/5 or she is too tired for her main meal.

DD at 12m ate dinner at around 5-5:30pm. Now at 28m we have dinner at 6pm generally.

She copes ok with this but we function on a slightly later schedule than most of her peers due to the nature of my work meaning that 3 days a week she doesn't get home from nursery until 6:50pm (she eats at nursery so then goes straight to bed once we're home).

Between 5-5:30. He's too grumpy and sleepy to eat any later.

CoodleMoodle · 02/10/2019 14:44

DD is now 5 and dinner has always been 5:30 since she was 6mo! DS is 15mo and it works for him too. They both have some warm milk at about 7pm, then DD is in bed by 7:30, DD by 8. Seems to be fine, here.

CoodleMoodle · 02/10/2019 14:45

*DS is in bed by 7:30, obviously!

Pantheon · 02/10/2019 14:53

Thanks all. Similar to us then. A few people I know were surprised my dd eats at that time but she'd be too tired to eat much later.

Yeah about 5/5.30pm or he just wants to snack and then won't eat dinner!

HuloBeraal · 02/10/2019 16:06

My 7 year old and my 2 year old both eat at 5:30. 2 year old sleeps at 7, the 7 year old at 8.

londonloves · 02/10/2019 16:15

My son is just turned 2. He has dinner between 530 and 6, then bath, stories and bed between 7 and 730, usually asleep by 8 latest. I couldn't do dinner much later and still fit everything in.

Bellsofstclements · 02/10/2019 16:20

5pm, bed at 7pm. Been this way since about 10mo.

MeadowHay · 02/10/2019 16:25

How young? DD is 18m and usually eats tea around 6, more like 6.20 on nursery days as logistically impossible to do it earlier, but can be as early as 5.30 occasionally. I don't think 5 is too early though, thought lots of toddlers ate at that time. It's just whatever suits you and them.

MeadowHay · 02/10/2019 16:26

DD is 15m! Dunno why I typed 18.

fannyanney · 02/10/2019 16:33

My children (3-7) are just finishing their dinner now.

Pantheon · 02/10/2019 17:14

Do your dc sleep until a decent time (for toddlers!)? My dd is an early riser and don't know if later meal would help or not but could be something else entirely causing that

NumberblockNo1 · 02/10/2019 17:18

We did 5.30 as I couldn't manage eating earlier!

thenightfury · 02/10/2019 17:18

About 5pm usually. It was earlier until he turned about 11m because he had a sensitive stomach and the dinner and bedtime bedtime was too much before bed and giving him tummy ache. We've upped it from about 4 till 5

LauraPalmersBodybag · 02/10/2019 17:22

My dd is 3.5, she has a 5-5.30pm dinner, bath on at 6.30ish and usually asleep by 7.30-8pm.

Dh and I eat after she’s asleep. I look forward to family mealtimes but they’re a few years away.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 02/10/2019 17:23

She also sleeps til 7am, give or take a bit on either side.

FriedasCarLoad · 02/10/2019 17:25

6pm, so that we can all eat together, then have a bit of family time before bed.

HarrietM87 · 03/10/2019 08:06

17 month old eats 6/6.15, bath straight after and usually asleep 7.30. Wakes up at 6.30am.

Ohyesiam · 03/10/2019 08:14

You have the go with what works fir your kids.
I knew someone who fed her kids a main meal at 3 in the afternoon because they would eat it all. Any later or earlier and they left half of it.
I guess they had a sandwich before bed or whatever.

MustardScreams · 03/10/2019 08:16

If dd (2.9) is at nursery she has dinner at 4:30ish. We usually get home around 6:45 and she’ll be in bed for 7:30.

If we’re at home she eats around 5/5:30 and in bed for 6:30. She sleeps till 6am roughly whatever time she goes to bed.

randomusername · 03/10/2019 08:25

Always been some time between 5&6 here, even pre-children!

I hope to goodness my next door neighbour is reading this thread as her two year old has dinner at 4.30pm and then has another dinner when his parents sit down at 7.30-8pm (which to me is somewhat late for him to be eating) and this gives his a load of energy and he then thunders round the house like a herd of elephants til after 9pm, sometimes 10pm until he falls asleep in the couch and they carry him to bed because he can’t settle himself if he’s put to bed before he’s asleep. Meanwhile I’ve had to listen to the thunder for one to two hours a night and sometimes it’s louder than my tv. I’ve asked them to keep it down before and have been snapped at. So fingers crossed they are reading this and take note of the majority’s suggestions about meal times!
