do i need a double buggy for dd (3.1yo) and newborn?

Hi, new baby due end of october, dd will be 3.1. She is walking a lot more, but still gets tired and needs the buggy from time to time. Also she is in the buggy on the rare occasions we go to town/shopping centre.
Do I need a double buggy, or can i get away with a sling for nb and the maclaren for dd? Or buggy board for dd and graco with pram insert for nb?
What have other mnetters done? Need advice please.
Oh and if you did use a bdl buggy - which one?

i actually got rid of my double buggy when DS was 3 Ihave exactly 2 years between them. If buggy boards had been around then I would have bought one of those, when I got rid of the double.

alucard · 12/08/2007 19:46

I have 18 month gap. I got maclaren twin buggy but hardly used it. I used the pram for 1st few months and either crammed them in together or used sling for 1 and had other in pram when ds was too tired to walk. Have a buggy board with 2 steps on so elder child can sit or stand on it. (ebay) I've used it with 2 toddlers standing on it as well. Buggy board was no good with my pram, I couldn't turn properly, but I used it with the buggy when dd was old enough. My prefered method is pram/buggy plus sling.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with a db. My 2.5yo dd walks miles. She's had to. Threw my double buggy out when she was 2 (pita it was imo).

I did the sling and maclaren thingy with mine for the most part - even though I had a
double buggy!

I really don't think three year olds need buggies. Get a buggy board if you have to, but I reckon she'll be walking.

popsycal · 12/08/2007 19:54

ds1 was 2 years 7 months when ds2 was born. I did not get a double buggy or a buggy board.

DS1 was walking pretty reliably by then

popsycal · 12/08/2007 19:55

Actually - we had one of those cheap single umbrella type strollers on the 1 or 2 occasions we had to go into town when ds2 was very young - of course, you need 2 adults. I ummed and ahhed over a double (probably documented on here!!!) but I am soooo glad that I did not bother!

popsycal · 12/08/2007 19:56

just to add (multiple postings sorry)
the litaf seat to go looks quite good if you want to go down the buggy board route. My friend has one for her 2 a a bit year old

My daughter was exactly 3.1 when baby was born and we did not get a double buggy and have been fine.

However, a couple of months before baby came (so about now for you) we started not taking buggy with us when we were out shopping just so she could get used to the idea of walking.

She did moan to be picked up a lot (and still does sometimes) but she's definately improved and am v glad we never got the double buggy.

MerlinsBeard · 12/08/2007 20:39

only read the OP but when ds2 was born ds1 was 2. He stayedin the buggy and DS1 was in asling. It was the perfect time to get DS1 used to walking, ie when i couldn't walk very fast or far! He was out f it completely by the time DS2 was about 6 months. Used the steps on the back a few times (Pliko) but only usually when he is late for nursery!!

JARM · 12/08/2007 20:43

I wouldnt.

THere is 15mnths between my DDs and we used a double for about 6 months tops.

I am getting a double this time though, DD2 will be 2.1 when DS arrives but we are moving and will be doing a lot more walking which i know she isnt up to.

She also likes to have a sleep still if we are out and about, so feel i have no choice!

DD1 has just turned 3 and walks everywhere with the occasional carry if its been a long day.

bigmouthstrikesagain · 12/08/2007 20:51

I used a dbl buggy - ds was 20m when dd was born, he napped for 1-2 hours most days in the buggy still - and I can't drive so walk everywhere. We used a Jane powertwin. We used it a lot or about a 9 or 10 months and then increasingly less. Now ds is 3 we have the buggy board and he can walk no problem.

I would say you wouldn't need a double sling/ buggy board should cover most requirements. hth good luck

beansprout · 12/08/2007 20:58

Ds will be 2.3 when db is born and I really haven't considered getting a double buggy. They look like waaay too much hassle!

Flibbertyjibbet · 12/08/2007 21:03

16m age gap. Sling and buggy or ds2 in pram and ds1 walking (on reins he was v young).
I did have a double buggy I was lent but hated using it as we live on a steep hill and my sons are large.
I had a mclaren twin traveller it was great for us as it goes in doorways etc. A tandem would have been terrible for me with huge ds1 sat at the front, I'd have sat down and cried at the first kerb I came to!
I used double buggy for 6m tops from when ds2 got too big for sling.
I passed my double on to someone who got a tandem and regretted it. Mil now wanting to know why I didn't keep the double to give sil who is expecting 2nd in Dec with 3.2 age gap - I said it would not have occured to me that someone with a 3 year old with working legs would need a double buggy.
If you use a sling for 2nd baby your dd will be 3.7 ish before you would need a double buggy and surely that is too old?
(All shoot me now)

summerunderakaftan · 12/08/2007 22:25

Just over 2 half year gap here and I dithered over a DB. I do have a buggy board but only use it sometimes. The thing is at 3 your d is oldenough to be walking more now and she will build up her stamina and get used to walking if you just start phasing out the buggy now and getting her to walk more. When ds first came along if we were going out shopping and knew we would be out for a long day we would both take a pram each (me and dp). On one occassion I did go shopping with a friend and took the Buggy and the sling but dd never saked to go in it she hapily walked the whole time.

I personally think your dd will be walking more and more especially if you don't offer the buggy as much from now on and a db would be a big unnecessary expense save the money and buy a funky new pram and a buggy board lol.

CarGirl · 12/08/2007 22:28

I really don't think you need a double, a buggy board would be good for when you need to get somewhere quickly or if you have long walks home from pre-school.

berolina · 12/08/2007 22:33

ds1 will be 2.4 when ds2 arrives. We will be going with the sling/buggy (stroller) combination. I am planning to take ds2 everywhere in the sling - we don't/won't even own a proper pram. have also bought one of those reins/backpack things for ds1.

curvymummy · 13/08/2007 10:11

thank you so much for all your responses. I was leaning towards not getting a db anyway as dd is walking more and more. The only time i am worried about is in town, so i can strap dd in - but we dont really go very often anyway. As you rightly say (flibbertyjibbet) by the time nb is out of the sling dd will be walking even more.
Time to check out buggy boards i think. Never thought about the fit with the pram though - will have to experiment.
Brought reins for dd ages ago, but never used them - might give them a go now though.

Hi Curvymummy - I have 3 year gap (only 20days off 3 years precisely) I used Graco pram but the Liberty Elite which means the seat lies flat and the footrest props up to be horizontal so with the special cover that comes with it it makes a carrycot (without having an extra carry cot)

I used Lascal buggyboard attached to the liberty elite and that worked a treat. Will say that as the liberty is a rear or forward facing pram when it is rear facing my son has to lean under the handle bar but this doesn't seem to bother him.

I used Mai Tai sling and then an Ergo but DS1 didn't use the pram it was just so I didn't have to take the pram everywhere.

The carrycot insert in the graco pram will only last till your baby is max 10 weeks, it is the reason I got the liberty. I still lie it flat now and DS2 is nearly 15 months.

I have googled the liberty and it would seem Graco no longer make it

curvymummy · 13/08/2007 10:55

hi fizzylemonade, already have the graco from first time round, it has pram insert which lasted my dd until 16 weeks, then the pushchair lies flat - but forward facing, sounds similar to your liberty. dd was sleeping flat in it for months before we put the foot rest down. Will get it out of the loft and try buggy boards with it. Hope it works as i like the graco.

I never really used reins with dd but I did buy a wrist strap when ds was born and never really used it, was more a threat lol. I was worried about her running off if I had the pram and knew she would chance her arm. It was used very occassionaly for a week or 2 and never seen again as she got used to walking beside the pram and holding on.

No

sling or Buggy board if you must That's what I did with 22mo and 2yr gaps. The newest style of b/board fits most prams and pushchairs.

NT 3yo can walk everywhere (hobby horse alert...)

rapunzelle · 14/08/2007 13:47

I had an 18 month gap between first and second, bought a double with carry cot attachhment for the baby, it was invaluable for about 6 months when my eldest hopped on board the buggy board.

children will be 4.5, and 3 yrs when number 3 is born and I wont be using a double, will probably unearth the buggyboard for if my middle one gets tired although he is a briliant walker.
