Just going to start by saying my GP is closed on Sunday & I'm unsure on whether it's worth ringing 111, that's why I'm asking MN.

DS is 16 months, he had a high temp (38°)
on Tuesday and went off his food. Wednesday, Thursday & Friday he didn't have a temperature but still didn't want to eat & was a bit out of sorts, although nothing major. Yesterday he seemed totally fine and we had a lovely day, we went out, he enjoyed his food etc.

I've just noticed this rash/spots this morning, there are none anywhere else... he seems fine in himself, digital ear thermometer reads 36.1. He is being his usual lovely, energetic self but after him being poorly this week I'm feeling slightly concerned.

Are they turning to blisters? From where they are it looks to me like it could be chicken pox. If more appear over the next couple of days I would assume it is. Give Calpol, an antihistamine like Piriton & lots of cool baths with bicarbonate of soda. Try to avoid scratching. After a few days the spots will turn to scabs & is then not infectious, don't give anything with ibuprofen in it, if you are worried, speak to your GP or ring 111 for advice.

My first thought is chicken pox, too. Classic place for it to start and very common to be run down first.

Gruzinkerbell1 · 29/09/2019 13:55

Looks like chicken pox

Welcome to the hell that is chicken pox

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/09/2019 14:04

Chicken pox

keepingbees · 29/09/2019 14:22

Yep I'd say those are chicken pox. Don't worry some children aren't poorly with them, mine were fine in themselves.

starfishcoffee · 29/09/2019 14:46

Thank you all, I'll brace myself! I did think chicken pox initially, but I dismissed it thinking he'd be running a temp & would be out of sorts but I think you're right. You can probably tell he's my first DC. Grin

Yep, agree it looks like pox. No ibuprofen, in case you don't know (I didn't)

rededucator · 29/09/2019 14:57

I don't know diddly squat about chicken pox but I do know your wee one has a lovely smile!

picklemepopcorn · 29/09/2019 15:04

This is great news! You'll only be in quarantine for about 5 days. When you have two dc, at the end of the first 5 days the second one gets it, so ten days. If you have 3...

Ginfordinner · 29/09/2019 15:06

The first time DD had chicken pox she was unwell before the spots came out. Once they appeared she started to feel better. She had it so mildly that she had it again when she was 9, and was really poorly with it. She still has the scars today.

Jingers5 · 29/09/2019 15:06

Chicken pox, buy poxiclin l think it's called.

Scienceforthewin · 29/09/2019 15:12

As above no ibuprofen, also don't underestimate the power of porridge oats in tights in the bath if it gets itchy 😁

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/09/2019 15:23

We survived chicken pox early this year and it was nowhere near as bad as I expected- worst part was being quarantined!
I would say we’ve experienced worse with general fevers and bugs.

Good luck

Mar19901 · 29/09/2019 15:30

I would say chicken pox too. When Ds had them last year it started in exact same place.

Aaarrgghhh · 29/09/2019 16:06

Looks like chicken pox. Paracetamol if he needs it and that lotion stuff (pale pink, very thin liquid be careful when pouring as it can go everywhere lol) if needed. One of mine didn’t need anything and the one we thought would be a risk only stayed in hospital one night for observation but again she was fine and i don’t even really remember it or how long it lasted. Obviously keep an eye because some children can take a nasty turn with it but most are absolutely fine.

Lougle · 29/09/2019 16:38

Calamine lotion is traditional and great, but pharmacies now sell calamine cream, which is fantastic - no mess.

starfishcoffee · 29/09/2019 20:00

A quick update, DS has gone to bed totally happy & no temp. There are no more spots as of yet. If it is chicken pox wouldn't he have more symptoms by now? I'm quite confused TBH.Confused

I guess only time will tell.

AlaskaWaves · 29/09/2019 20:06

I agree it's chicken pox. My DS was basically fine with his - just covered in spots! Don't give ibuprofen.
I found sudocrem was better to stop the itching rather than calamine cream.

Sleepyhead19 · 29/09/2019 20:12

Kids often have the temp before the spots. Mine did and were ok other than the itchy spots when they came out.
Piriton will help when they start itching.

Seaandsand83 · 29/09/2019 20:19

Spots can take quite a few days to all appear I thought my son had got away with it lightly and then 4 days later he had the worst case a nurse had seen, absolutely covered and a fair few became infected so needed antibiotics.
Err just realised this sounds like I'm trying to scare you, I just mean more may still appear... Or not...

Soontobe60 · 29/09/2019 20:23

Yep, chicken pox! Show us a photo in the morning, he might be covered!

keepingbees · 29/09/2019 22:01

My son literally had nothing more than a headache before bed one night, woke up with a few spots the next morning. Had to keep him off school for the week but he was pinging off the walls fine, no temp or feeling poorly at all and only a scattering of a few spots.

medicstudentmum · 29/09/2019 22:04

My 2 year old was only poorly BEFORE his rash came out. He was spotty and rather socially unacceptable for a while, but absolutely fine in himself! My poor 6 year old didn't fare quite so well and was really ill with it. Each case is different I guess!

starfishcoffee · 29/09/2019 22:18

@rededucator

Thank you! Rest assured DS uses his lovely smile to his advantage already GrinHmm
