Next to me cribs - any good??

Hiya
My DH and I had DS1 on Saturday and are completely new to parenting so please be nice to me haha!

He's good as gold all day, such a happy little boy and eats/sleeps like a dream during the day.

This is the third night of having him here and we cannot get him to settle. Everyone keeps recommending we get a chicco next to me but before I shell out on one, can anyone let me know if they make any difference? We have a Moses basket (which he hates!) so didn't really want to have to buy a next to me too but I don't know if I'm jumping the gun and anyone has any advice on how we can get any sleep at all at night? Last night we managed 45 mins all night and that was because we did shifts 🙈 or is there a cheaper version of the next to me that you've used that's been just as good??

Desperate first time parents in much need of some sleep!!

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a crib or bedside co-sleeper, we’ve recently updated our best cribs page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their babies. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

The next to me cot was honestly the best thing I bought for my son and I would 100% recommend one. He loved being close to us, and we loved having him there and he always settled and slept really well. He's 6 months old now and we've only just finished using it in the last week. I was really upset when he got to big for it and had to go in a 'big' cot.
I have just sold it on Facebook market place for more than half the original price so although the initial outlay was more expensive than a Moses basket after selling it it worked out to be about the same.

DS 17months had one. He loved it and slept really well in it. Was sleeping through the night from 5 weeks old. Best thing I bought. I hope you get some decent sleep soon OP.

Hmm that's a good point... I did check marketplace earlier and there only two in my area and they are much cheaper but once I've bought a new mattress for it, it doesn't work out much cheaper than buying the whole thing brand new bit that is something to think about...

We've got one of those monitors with the sensor on which requires a cable coming out of the bottom, do you know if this would be compatible? DH is currently asleep lying on top of me, so he's tired just as soon as I put him down in the Moses basket all hell breaks loose!!

Haha sorry, DS not DH, that would be awful 🙈

My 7 week old won’t sleep in it as she needs to be even closer.

Look up safe cosleeping as what you are doing at the moment is not safe as there is a very real risk you will fall asleep like that.

We had a Next2Me and I loved it, was lovely to have DH on one side and DS on the other! Lasted a good 8 months and helped him transition to a big cot as we gradually moved it away from our bed, into his own room and from there into a cot bed.

We also had the under mattress monitor but didn't use it with Next2Me, think there was a risk of it picking up your movement as it's so close to your bed so wouldn't work effectively, sure there was something in the instructions about that.

@hormonesorDHbeingadick

I'll check it out, thank you.

@secondchild2019

Ah, another problem 😂 I really wanted to use this monitor, we were bought it as a gift and I love it, feel really reassured, first time mum nerves 🙈 but we do need sleep...

Is this something I'm making into a bigger issue than it is? I.E he will learn to be okay with the Moses basket he's just new and doesn't know what's going on? If so, does anyone have any tips?

Definitely get the Next2Me, they will be more likely to sleep better if they're close to you and for preventing SIDS etc.

We have a next2me - was wonderful with our 2 year old DD and currently my 3month old DD is enjoying a nice sleep in it while I’m next to her on the bed!

We got this because like you said, our first born DS hated the cot, Moses basket and anything else we put him in so we suffered in silence with sleepless nights for months. I’m pretty sure things would’ve been different had I got the chicco sooner so that he could’ve been closer. The only way he slept happily was on me in bed or next to me in bed which would obviously have me worrying constantly in the night that I hadn’t squished or suffocated him.

Definitely look for a second hand one, shpok etc. I also got a coccoonababy which is great but realistically only useful for the first few months. Hoping you get a good nights rest soon! And congratulations on your little bundle!

Google the 4th trimester, it will explain he doesn’t like the Moses basket.

Thank you, maybe I will just have to buy one!

He's fine in the pushchair with the bassinet attachment, sleeps in that even if it isn't attached to the pushchair and in my eyes I can't tell what the difference is?? DH just brought it up and we put it on the bed as a test to see if he would settle and he's gone straight to sleep... Obviously won't leave him like it but wanted to see if it was the same problem as the Moses basket, clearly it's different some how! Does make me feel better about the next to me though as clearly the Moses basket is the issue?

I had a really horrible and long induction and was in hospital since Wednesday, and he wasn't born until Saturday so I'm desperate for some kind of sleep, someone tell me it gets better 🙈

It definitely gets better! Hang in there. Try to survive on those lovely newborn cuddles (and coffee!)

White/pink noise is good too. It needs to be surprisingly loud.

I've got a next to me but have never attached it to our bed, we use it as a stand-alone cot. I also use it with an angel care movement monitor and it works perfectly.

I just wanted to say, if your baby is literally days old, why don't you stick with the Moses basket for a little while longer to see if they settle before you fork out for a next to me? My LO is 4 months old now and I hate to tell you but they don't sleep early on and you will feel like a zombie! But it does get much better so hang in there Smile try not to have massive expectations for sleep, just go with it and don't worry about it.

We had a standard cot, moved the bedside table and put it right by the bed with the side down for the first few months.

Was able to get dc out in the night for feeding without getting out of bed.

Didn’t have these cots then so this was a version

Got the Next2Me for DC2, wish I’d had it with DC1! Best thing ever.

100% is get one. My little one is 8 weeks old and goes in hers every night. We started with a Moses basket and brought this a few weeks back. After never getting her to sleep in the Moses basket this worked from night one!

Next to me cribs - any good??

Some good advice on here OP. I’m in DS3 with a next2me, had a Moses for the previous two and I do prefer the next2me, however, usually have the smallest LO in bed with me from 3am, as they only sleep so much when they are little where ever you put them! Next2me will last a lot longer than the Moses, which would be outgrown by now, so worth it if you want baby in your room for longer before moving to a cot / another room. Good luck.

100% Next to me ! It helped in the night especiallywhsy breastfeeding and also geloed soothe her- if she did want cuddles too, she could come in my bed easily for cuddles and minimimal disruption putting her back!

Ds was born this week too via a long induction so you have my sympathy! We have a snuzpod from previous DC and it works very well, but he already has worked out that sleeping on mum is warm and comfier than the flat mattress, so I've popped our sleepyhead in it and he goes down ok in that. It'd not ideal - I'd rather he was on a flat mattress but it's either that or me falling asleep holding him.

Are you bf? If so you might try to rouse more during the day and feed so he's not up so much at night.

my first was a velcro baby, would never be put down so whatever you do it might not work. Going to bed much earlier helps

Kej13 · 10/09/2019 05:40

@Tatogratin congratulations! I've seen those but our midwife has strongly advised against them? She's coming again to weigh him today so will speak to her about it.

DH had him for a few hours so I could sleep now we've swapped, but velcro baby describes DS perfectly!

No not bf, he has a medical condition (which is fine) but means he can't bf so we're bottle feeding him, does that make a difference?

We bought one for DS and it was a lifesaver. We used it with an angelcare monitor.

He’s still in it at 7 months but it’s in the corner of the room rather than attached to the bed.

Congratulations OP, but huge sympathy on the sleep front - the first few nights were awful for us too. Think it did get better on night 4, but I was BFing and that's when my milk had come in, not sure how it works with formula. We did find waking her every two hours to feed during the day helped I think.

We had the next 2 me dream which I loved. Found it reassuring having the little barrier between us rather than her being right there like with the normal model. But I could stick a hand out to pat her to sleep which never once worked and didn't have to get up to lift her. But I never got on with c sleeping.

I think they do just prefer to be close to you in the early days though.

We found that our baby didn't like being in the next to me cot for the first 3 weeks - she wanted to sleep on me instead which was a nightmare. We tried her in the next to me cot every night and after 3 weeks she finally settled.

We've all loved it, it's been lovely to have her so close to me at night without having the worry of co-sleeping. She will be going in her own room at the end of this month and I'll miss having her next to me every night.

From 6 weeks we only had 1 wake up per night between 7-7
From 4 months she's slept through 7-7
