Hiya
My DH and I had DS1 on Saturday and are completely new to parenting so please be nice to me haha!

He's good as gold all day, such a happy little boy and eats/sleeps like a dream during the day.

This is the third night of having him here and we cannot get him to settle. Everyone keeps recommending we get a chicco next to me but before I shell out on one, can anyone let me know if they make any difference? We have a Moses basket (which he hates!) so didn't really want to have to buy a next to me too but I don't know if I'm jumping the gun and anyone has any advice on how we can get any sleep at all at night? Last night we managed 45 mins all night and that was because we did shifts 🙈 or is there a cheaper version of the next to me that you've used that's been just as good??

Desperate first time parents in much need of some sleep!!

This thread is a little old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’ve landed here looking for a crib or bedside co-sleeper, we’ve recently updated our best cribs page with lots of great options, as tried and tested by Mumsnet users and their babies. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

So for the last few nights we have persevered with the Moses basket as I really don't like using the bassinet attachment, just felt wrong 😂 (I know he doesn't care!!)

Up slightly more in the night but to be honest I think as he's getting older (9 days old now) he's just hungrier and wants more feeds, so think maybe the Moses basket is working for him now? Don't want to jinx it, bet well have a rubbish night tonight now I've said this 😂

We didn't have those when I had dd. But when the midwife came she saw our oram with bassinet in the living room. She assumed dd was sleeping in there and I said she can't can she?! And she said she didn't see the problem. Just don't have the hood up on it. So we didn't. We used that for quite a while. It was more enclosed than the Moses basket which she seemed to like

@Kej13 we had one with the angelcare sensor monitor, wasn't aware that you weren't meant to, no idea whether it affected it working or not.
I have to say after having a family heirloom crib then getting fed up of it, buying a bedside crib was the best money we spent.

Some prams have specific basket stands, mine had a rocking base for the floor. Is he swaddled in the Moses basket? Ds hated the basket with a passion If he wasn’t swaddled cause he slapped the sides morrowing, which woke him up, he hated his swinging crib more.. he morrowed it moved he woke up 😂. He went into his cot at 6weeks (in our room) and slept great.. until he grew big enough to slap the sides again.. but he’s not as morrowy now so he doesn’t do it much.

We never got a next 2me because it’s not compatible with all bed heights.. ours is quite high and our spare bed is low, so he’d either have a risk with a drop or a step up so I didn’t even bother with a cheaper version.. also feared he’d hate it too.

@candlefloozy yes I wondered if DS liked the bassinet because it is more enclosed too! Midwife showed me a way of basically stuffing the sides because we tried swaddling him and he went CRAZY, he hated it 😂 so stuffing him in seems to work for now...

@shallen I need to use the monitor in order to get any sleep myself, I worry too much otherwise 😂

@Lunafortheloveogod no haven't swaddled him, tried it and he hated it with a passion... Midwife showed us a way of squishing him in which he likes much better. Haven't seen a specific stand for our bassinet, it's nothing fancy so I doubt they do one? I will look into it though as that does sound good. That's it, I don't want to spend the money and not be able to use it which was my worry!

New born babies do wake more at night to feed for a little while. It takes a while for feeding to be fully established.
OP, you need to grab as much sleep as you can when your lo sleeps during the day. It will get better!

Kej13 · 16/09/2019 23:18

@soontobe60 tell me about it, it's been almost every hour today so not holding out much hope for the night 😂

Mine still ended up in with me and the next 2me cot ended up being storage for surplus nappies and wipes

shallen · 17/09/2019 08:08

@Kej13 I was the same, as I say, we used ours with a bedside crib, if I took her out to feed (whilst still in bed) and forgot to turn the alarm off it went off, so must work to an extent.

The other bonus of a bedside crib is it's much easier to check on them every 2 mins when you are super paranoid!! That's what I did anyway!! 😂

Kej13 · 17/09/2019 16:52

@shallen omg the alarm 😂 we have the tommee tippee one and I think I forget to turn it off 90% if the time before I take DS out of the Moses basket and the alarm going off gets me every single time 🙈

I've taken to sticking my hand by his in the Moses basket and waiting for him to hold my hand 😣🤣 he's quite a wiggly baby anyway so I tend to be able to tell he's okay but honestly night time scares me!

We didn't use one but I've heard they are great! Particularly for mums that are breastfeeding but also its nice for the babies and mums to see each other easily through the mesh.
