Unexpectedly pregnant with dc2, dc1 will be 7 when born

Panicking about age gap! Will they ever play together or will it be like having two only children?

My brother is 7 years older than me & we didn't really ever play together. Think it may have been different if we'd both been girls or both been boys.

Tulio · 08/07/2019 18:36

My husband has an almost 7 year age gap between him and his brother and they’re super close. I don’t know about playing together, but as adults they’re definitely best friends.

charityhallet · 08/07/2019 18:39

I am currently listening to my DS10 and my DD2.5 playing in the bath together. They are being very silly and play together so well. He's totally on her wave length and so patient . I don't think you've anything to worry about.

I'm very close to my sister now and we're 10 years apart but obviously didn't play together as kids. My ds's are 13 months apart and barely speak to one another

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/07/2019 18:44

No they probably wontbplay together. On the other hand they wont fight because they both want the same piece of lego/ doll/ truck etc.

My two sons are less than 2 years apart, now they are adults they have very little on common.

Incywincybitofa · 08/07/2019 18:45

Mine are 6.5 years apart and spend a lot of time together.
They play and roughouse and watch TV together.
There is 18 months between my sister and I and we have never been close or played together

Wolfiefan · 08/07/2019 18:46

My two are 6 years apart. They spent most of the weekend playing together.

Teddyreddy · 08/07/2019 18:49

There's a 7 year gap between me and my youngest DB. While we enjoyed 'playing' together as kids, it was definitely me being sort of parental. I'd help him do his lego, or build train tracks for him. It also got less as I became more of a teenager and a bit more looking outward rather than into the family. I also have a DSis much closer in age - we played more or less as equals, that never happened with DB. It doesn't mean DB and I aren't close as adults though - the bigger gap meams sibling jealousy isn't an issue so in many ways it's an easier relationship.

Julykthat · 08/07/2019 18:51

There are seven years between my two and they get on great. The elder is a girl and the younger a boy and I think that helps plus she adores him and has done from day one. She says he is the best thing to ever happen to her Smile. In return She is his favourite person, they always hug when one is going away and will snuggle up together on the sofa. I do think we are all very lucky because I have known much closer in age same sex siblings who hated each other (my siblings and I being one example Blush)

They are currently 17 and 10. They do play together, well, these days they will listen to music, make silly videos and watch films together. They will go to the pool together and have a good time but it's not the same as if they were closer in age. In general they have always been into hugely different things (at different stages) though this hasn't stopped them finding some common ground and they tend to be each other's confidants. I found it hard at times because i couldn't please both with the one activity (except cycling with the baby in a carrier seat) so the youngers requirements usually trumped the elders (but I've heard people find the opposite works).

Congratulations though! It was a bit like starting over after seven years Grin

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 08/07/2019 18:54

I have 8 years between ds1 and 2 and 8 years between ds2&3

They do lots of things together, ds3 is 8 now and for quite a few years him and ds2 have been close, they go out together to the park/cinema etc (because ds2 likes to spend time with him)

Ds1 is 24 and goes out for food with ds2 who is 16, also took him for his prom suit

It’s a different kind of relationship to the one ds3& ds4 have who are 22 months apart

Tbh I enjoyed the larger age gaps than I do the smaller one

TheKitchenWitch · 08/07/2019 18:58

EmmaGrundyForPM Could you come round and tell my 2 your theory about not fighting ? :D :D

8 year age gap, 4yo and 12yo boys. They most definitely do play together, more and more, but sadly they also fight like the devil!

I personally love having a big age gab between them, but it's what I'm used to as there is a 6 year gap between me and my sister, and we played all the time and are really close as adults too.

Heymummee · 08/07/2019 18:59

There’s a 10 year gap between my boys and they always play together. They’re very close, it’s lovely. DS1 gets fed up of being tormented though Smile

lpchill · 08/07/2019 19:00

Me and my sister have 7 year age gap. Shared a room with her until I moved out. We are closer than me and my brother who we share an 11 month age gap

paddlingwhenIshouldbeworking · 08/07/2019 19:03

Probably won't play as such but depending on personalities, very likely to have a lovely relationship which will evolve as they get older.

I am closest to the sibling who is almost 8 years older than me, I guess because sibling rivalry wasn't an issue. She thought I was much more adorable than the siblings closest in age to her and I worshipped her as my big glamorous older sister.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 08/07/2019 19:07

My DB is 6 years older than me. In someways it was like being two only children (a good thing for attention) but he was always v.kind to me and we have ended up as great friends as adults. In stark contrast to every one of my friends who has less than a 2 year gap with their siblings and are all barely on speaking terms.

QuickRedFox · 08/07/2019 19:11

I know a set of three brothers with 7 years between the eldest and the middle and seven years between the middle and the youngest. They are the closest brothers I know.

Yellowcar2 · 08/07/2019 19:15

11 years between me and my big sister. Didn't really play together when we were younger but we became much closer from when I was around 13 - 14 and spent time shopping, lunches, cinema etc. Now we are older we are even closer and holiday together regularly.

namechangedforthis1980 · 08/07/2019 19:41

5 years between my two, they've never really played together - although DS1 was good at entertaining DS2 when he was a baby!

ChikiTIKI · 08/07/2019 20:10

My dad and his twin brother have another brother 7 years older and I believe they all played together growing up.

I suppose by the time the baby can do much in the way of active playing probably at the age of about 3, the older one will be going to high school soon. It's a big gap but that doesn't mean they won't love each other and enjoy each other's company. And as they get older the age gap will seem smaller and eventually become insignificant.

Congratulations on your happy news :)

MarshaBradyo · 08/07/2019 20:11

Mine do a lot

Introvertedbuthappy · 08/07/2019 20:13

4 weeks shy of 7 years between our boys and they play well together. My 10 year old loves the excuse to be a bit silly and play with trains, building blocks etc and my 3 year old wants to do what his brother does. They are lovely together.

2littleninjas · 08/07/2019 20:15

My eldest little sister and I are 7 years apart and we played together and are extremely close. We didn’t necessarily play together, it was more of me playing with things she liked

Chovihano · 08/07/2019 20:16

Yes, but it's not the same play.
They tend to play with them like an uncle would rather than close siblings. When the youngest is older though there seems hardly any difference a teen and someone in their early twenties are great together.
My 15 and 25 year old are enjoying a game on playstation now, and will then watch a film. They hang out whenever they aren't busy or with friends.

Chovihano · 08/07/2019 20:17

I meant close as in age not relationship.

Summertimeatthebeach · 08/07/2019 20:17

Ds was 6 when his db came along. They are 4 +10 and very close. Ds 10 always has time for him.
