We are taking DD ("y 5m) to France at October half term for a holiday. We have been taking to her about it and she is really into the idea that over in France they talk a different language to us.

I have a basic French language picture book which she is enjoying looking at and talking about, and sh loves shouting Bonjour Papa, etc. to daddy, nana and grandad...

I kind of know the words to Frere Jaques and I taught her that in the car on the way home from work at the start of the week - she loves it and sings it to everyone now.

I would love to know more that I could teach her. You know, basic nursery rhymes or repetitive songs.

Does anyone know any? Or where I can find some?

Please bear in mind that I am not a French speaker. I did GCSE several years ago, and that's it. I can remember buts but my pronunctiation is probably rubbish. But I would like o keep her enthusiasm going, espeically up to and whilst we go away.

TIA!

I have been teaching DS to count in French - we count together while I do sit ups, we do one lot in English, one lot on French, and so-on. he really enjoys it.

We do the counting too. DD is still very bemused by the idea of people talking differently in different countries, bless her. But she is really eager to have a go. Apparantly she has to know how to ask for chocolate in the shop and mummy and nana will need to ask for wine, and daddy and grandad beer!!!

But I also love the idea of singing songs with her in French. She loves singing and dancing anyway.

Just needs some words - and basic tune ideas!

roisin · 16/09/2004 14:23

Hulababy - we have this book You can also get a version with a tape of the songs.

HTH

roisin · 16/09/2004 14:27

The other song that springs to mind is:

Au clair de la lune
(You probably know the tune? - when I was little most Fisher Price toys seemed to use it - in G major, starts 4 crotchets: G G G A; 2 minims: B A)

The words are:
Au clair de la lune, mon ami Pierrot
Prete-moi ta plume, pour ecrire un mot,
Ma chandelle est morte, je n'ai plus de feu;
Ouvre-moi ta porte, pour l'amour de Dieu.

(There are two more verses if you want them?)

Hulababy · 16/09/2004 14:38

Thanks roisin. I will have a look for the version with the tape if I can.

Just found music and words to Alouette too now.

Allouette je te plumerais
Je te plumerais la tete
Je te plumerais la tete
Et la tete, et la tete
Allouette allouette

Oh allouette gentil........
repeat with different body parts which you have to point to as you sing.

Hula your dd is so clever! All of this would be way beyond the capabilities of my ds.

My FIL is french and sings a few songs to ds in French, but can't remember them. Will post when I remember!

Hulababy · 16/09/2004 16:35

She's just a chatterbox, that's all Northerner.

Would be lovely to hear any you remember. We have a proper French french teacher at school and I keep forgetting to ask her.

Ok, my memory of French vocab is rusty, to say the least, 19 years post-O-level, so spelling probably rubbish but how about

Sur le pont d'Avignon
On y danse
On y danse
Sur le pont d'Avignon
On y danse
tu tour on

(really can't remember spelling last line but something like that)

edam · 16/09/2004 20:08

Oh, and there should be an accent on the 'e' of 'danse' I'm pretty sure.

Frenchgirl · 16/09/2004 20:11

Hula, I've had a look on Amazon france for you, and this looks very good
also found simpler one, but I think the quality isn't quite as good, here
for when she's bit older, try anything by Henri Des or Anne Sylvestre, also Agnes Chaumie is brilliant (more suitable for her age now actually than the other two). When she's about 5, she can get into a true french classic, Emilie Jolie. It's all on Amazon.fr.

Bonne chance!

OldieMum · 16/09/2004 20:18

It looks like Frenchgirl has solved the problem. If not, I have book called 'Les plus belles chansons du temps passe' which has lots of children's songs. If you contact me, I could photocopy some for you.

Frenchgirl · 16/09/2004 20:19

polishes beret

Hulababy · 16/09/2004 20:29

Thanks all

Frenchgirl - thanks for that. Will have a proper look tomorrow. And make notes of some titles. See if I can get hold of something in France in October.
