We are taking DD ("y 5m) to France at October half term for a holiday. We have been taking to her about it and she is really into the idea that over in France they talk a different language to us.

I have a basic French language picture book which she is enjoying looking at and talking about, and sh loves shouting Bonjour Papa, etc. to daddy, nana and grandad...

I kind of know the words to Frere Jaques and I taught her that in the car on the way home from work at the start of the week - she loves it and sings it to everyone now.

I would love to know more that I could teach her. You know, basic nursery rhymes or repetitive songs.

Does anyone know any? Or where I can find some?

Please bear in mind that I am not a French speaker. I did GCSE several years ago, and that's it. I can remember buts but my pronunctiation is probably rubbish. But I would like o keep her enthusiasm going, espeically up to and whilst we go away.

TIA!

Got the ELC CD today and DD is currently listening to it. She loves Frere Jaques, and is now trying to count in French!

Just remember that Alouette actually means "sky lark, sky lark, kind / nice sky lark, I'm going to pull you to bits" And the you proceed to state with each verse which "bit" you are going to pull off next. If your DD / DS isn't interested in the meaning, go ahead, it's a great tune, but if they are the sensitive type, be prepared ....
We use tapes in school to teach with but they are ancient.
I'l have a think and if I find anything I'll let you know.

Grant and Cutler is the main langs text book supplier in this country - they have quite a few here but couldn't tell you a specific recommendation. They don't sell crap though.

Hi Hula, I quite like les plus belles comptines des Petits Lascars and les plus belles chansons des Petits Lascars , both books with a CD, they are mostly traditional songs and rhymes, some with gestures, the songs are sung by children, and the books are beautifully illustrated and comme with a whole load of very interesting comments about the songs (but you have to be able to read French...)

More immediately: you could teach your dd Ah vous dirais-je maman, which has the same tune as twinkle twinkle:
Ah vous dirais-je maman
Ce qui cause mon tourment
Papa veut que je raisonne
Comme une grande personne
Moi je dis que les bonbons
Valent mieux que la raison

I like:

Les petits poissons dans l'eau
Nagent, nagent, nagent nagent nagent
Les peits poissons dans l'eau
Nagent aussi bien que les gros
Les petits les gros
Nagent comme il faut
Les gros les petits
Nagent bien aussi

Can't get much simpler than that for vocab!
