My dd turns 1 in about 2 weeks? 5th July. Would it be okay when this tub of milk runs out to just go straight into the 1-2 growing up milk? Basically just Two weeks earlier?

Why not just switch to cows milk? They can have it to drink from 1.

newmomof1 · 23/06/2019 14:41

Our HV told us that for as long as you feed them formula they can have number 1 - the next ones up cost more but are basically the same apparently

NannyR · 23/06/2019 14:42

Full fat cows milk is absolutely fine for them from one year old, a fair bit cheaper and less hassle than formula too.

Save your money, cows milk all the way

rubesstone22 · 23/06/2019 14:45

Yeah that's what I should do but she doesn't seem to want to drink cows milk, I've offered little sips just to see how she'd like it and she won't take it at all🤷🏻‍♀️

The mainly created growing up milk to get around the ban on advertising baby formula...

Expressedways · 23/06/2019 14:47

Growing up milk is nonsense invented by formula companies because they’re not allowed to advertise the infant stuff, there’s absolutely no need for it. I’d go straight to cows milk now before the formula runs out. That way if he doesn’t immediately take to the taste you have some formula to mix it with e.g. you make a normal 4oz bottle and then top up with 3oz cows milk and then increase the ratio slowly until he’s having only cow’s milk. You might not need to do this but we had to as DD was initially sceptical of the change! She’s fine with milk now though.

RandomMess · 23/06/2019 14:47

Start mixing the formula with cows milk and slowly increase the amount of cows milk to formula over a few weeks.

HelloJuly · 23/06/2019 14:48

My hv said if you're giving formula at all it should be the first stage one, whatever you give newborns. With appropriate solid food as well obviously. The growing up stuff is just sweet milk isn't it?

Badwifey · 23/06/2019 14:48

You could buy one tub and mix small amounts of cows milk through gradually increasing the amount until it's all she drinks. You'll save a fortune and her teeth... them follow ons are supposed to be terrible for teeth.

Thursday452poh · 23/06/2019 14:49

I’d over the next two weeks mix cows milk and formula together, wean out the formula and she won’t notice.
Make sure the cows milk is warm too, my DS hated it cold!

HelloJuly · 23/06/2019 14:51

Cow's milk is only really needed for calcium and fat anyway, it's not like breast/formula milk for babies as it doesn't replace all food. Mine didn't drink cow's milk for ages after weaning but he ate loads of cheese, yogurt, hoummous etc which gave calcium.

Ask your hv, but ppl get weirdly hung up on having 'milk' of any sort to drink when they're already eating a varied diet.

rubesstone22 · 23/06/2019 14:52

I'd already bought it that was all. It says on the back just two bottles a day from that formula is enough (1-2) cow and gate , I'm still new to all this as it's my first child All the ingredients is different to the 6-12 months tub too? Or do they just fake that so you buy it

Agree with PP. I've been told by multiple medical people that the growing up milk is not necessary and purely a way for companies to get around formula advertising. From age one they should move onto cows milk in a cup. Use up what you've bought, but no need for any more. Agree mixing a bit of formula with cows milk is a good way to introduce slowly. My 1st wasn't keen, but if they have enough cheese, yoghurt etc it's absolutely fine.

rubesstone22 · 23/06/2019 15:01

My dd won't drink from a cup either 😬 I feel like I've done this wrong

HelloJuly · 23/06/2019 15:26

Does she not have water?

5kidsandlosingit · 23/06/2019 15:27

It’s not necessary.
I put all mine on cows’ milk at around 6 months.

Teddybear45 · 23/06/2019 15:30

Full fat cows or goats milk would probably be better.

Expressedways · 23/06/2019 15:31

You haven’t done anything wrong! Switch the milk then worry about changing the cup. Don’t try to change too much at once! At that age we had a Mam trainer cup with a soft spout that was pretty bottle-like, maybe look into that once you have the milk sorted. I’d probably finish the current tub then since you’ve already bought it, use the growing up milk to mix with cows milk to wean her off formula altogether. Don’t bother buying it again though, it’s expensive and not necessary.

HelloJuly · 23/06/2019 15:33

OP you're not doing anything wrong!
From the NHS website:

Formula milk

First infant formula is usually based on cows' milk and is the only suitable alternative to breast milk in the first 12 months of your baby's life.

Follow-on formula isn't suitable for babies under 6 months, and you don't need to introduce it after 6 months.

First infant formula, follow-on formula or growing-up milks aren't needed once your baby is 12 months old.

Cows' milk can be introduced as a main drink from 12 months.

rubesstone22 · 23/06/2019 15:35

She has water but only in a bottle otherwise she won't drink it🤷🏻‍♀️ and ok thanks everyone I haven't opened that tub so I could just take it back! I'm sure if I make the cows milk warmer she may eventually take to it

OP posts:
ChippingInLowCarbing · 23/06/2019 15:39

Put some of the formula she likes in her soppy cup, don’t offer her the bottle.

Then use the follow on you’ve bought but no need to buy more, it’s narketing crap. It’s just added sugar and they’re don’t need formula if they’re eating well. If they’re not eating well that needs sorting and stage one milk is better if you’re still going to give her it but give it to her in a sippy cup

Knitwit99 · 23/06/2019 15:43

You haven't done anything wrong.

To answer your original question,it would be fine to use the 1yr+ milk from now. Won't do any harm at all.

If I were you I would....

Start adding some cows milk to the formula, aiming to end up on just cows milk in a few weeks time. Doesn't matter when exactly.

If you haven't opened the other tub of milk return it and get your money back. You don't need it. But if you have opened it or you feel she needs it then just use it. It doesn't matter.

Give her a cup with water at meal or snack time. She will figure out what to do with it sooner or later. Exactly when doesn't matter.

Don't worry, you are doing great.

rubesstone22 · 23/06/2019 16:29

Whole milk is full fat milk isn't it? Or am I being thick?

Teddybear45 · 23/06/2019 16:40

Yep
