6 week old baby outgrown Moses basket, what did you do?

My intention was to keep baby in our room until 6-9months. But my baby is 6 weeks and has outgrown his Moses basket. I was thinking of getting a next to me crib, but are they much bigger than the Moses basket? What did you do?

Thanks x

I never had a Moses basket for any of mine because it always seemed they were outgrown too fast but I did have a next to me for ds3 and he was in that until around 8 months old and he was a long baby and there was still room in it lengthways.

Ihatesundays · 09/06/2019 22:15

I just bought a travel cot and put a proper mattress in the bottom. I needed the travel cot anyway so wasn’t an added cost.
I wouldn’t buy anything else which will only do them when they are very small now as you might end up buying something else again.

Thesearmsofmine · 09/06/2019 22:15

Your other option is putting his cot up in your room.

Are you sure it’s too small? How big is your baby? Smile

Waiting1987 · 09/06/2019 22:17

Is it a very small basket? Mine managed to stay in until 5/6 months and he wasn't particularly small at birth.

Newyearnewunicorn · 09/06/2019 22:19

I kept mine in his Moses basket until he was 7 months (because he wouldn’t sleep anywhere else) and his feet were against one end and his head against the other.
I do have a travel cot which is smaller than a normal travel cot with an excellent bassinet position I think it’s a nuna one that sort of cot might work well for you. Although I’ve not really used it as a cot I have used it as a play pen a lot

peachgreen · 09/06/2019 22:20

I hired a BedNest. Much cheaper than buying a side sleeper.

Kanga83 · 09/06/2019 22:21

Never had a Moses, we went straight to a Hyde Mothercare crib which was brilliant. Fitted by the side of my bed and both children were in it until 7-8 months

SlB09 · 09/06/2019 22:21

Used the carry cot on the pram for quite a while as a makeshift Moses but was bigger and we used it downstairs, then Next to me upstairs, he was in it until 6/7months and there was still room.

caoraich · 09/06/2019 22:22

We have a snuzpod and 8 month old is still in it. Works great and means I have never got out of bed to feed her in the night since she was born

Hortz · 09/06/2019 22:23

Mine lasted ten days in the basket, both huge babies. I moved furniture around and put up the cot next to my bed where it stayed for six months.
No reason they can't go straight into a cot.

stucknoue · 09/06/2019 22:23

I used the carrycot on the pram until 7 months - a flat so just pushed it through.

Blackandwhitecat1 · 09/06/2019 22:34

I put him in his cot in our room, he looked ridiculously tiny in it but on the plus side he was used to sleeping in it from the start so no tricky transition

chargedproton · 09/06/2019 22:41

I bought a snuzpod.

FlatPackPat · 09/06/2019 22:50

Another one asking how big is baby/how small is the Moses basket? Cos I feel like baby would have to be pretty gigantic to not fit in a normal Moses basket!

DS wS 9lb and long at birth and fitted in his Moses basket/next to me until 5months when he learned to crawl and pull himself up on the side so it wasn't safe anymore. He's now 19mos and has been in his cot in our room since then.

Mermaid04 · 09/06/2019 23:01

I feel like i have a huge baby haha. He’s very long. He’s only 6 weeks but he will be out of it in 4 weeks I think. Can’t believe babies fit in them until 6 months!! Thanks for your replies x

Apologies guys I have worded it wrong, he’s going to have outgrown it in 4-6 weeks I think Blush

Cot in the room here too. She really seemed to enjoy sleeping with her arms outstretched.

Jowak1 · 09/06/2019 23:07

My little girl outgrew her Moses basket at about 4 months old as she was 10lb 5 when she was born. We put her in her own room after this. This was nearly 9 years ago and I hadn't heard of the next to you add on crib things!

niclw · 09/06/2019 23:09

@Mermaid04 My baby boy was above the 95th percentile for length and at 6 weeks I was saying exactly the same as you. I really didn't think the Moses basket would last long. However, he started growing in length at a much slower rate and lasted until about 3 months at night time. I then put the cot into my bedroom but kept using the muses downstairs for another few weeks. However, I had to stop using it as he learnt to roll onto his side and kept burying his face in the side of the basket. I've kept the Moses basket in case I have another baby but I think I'd use it downstairs only and buy a next to me crib instead. I did consider buying one when my baby was 3 months but I had the room for a cot so just did that to save money x

randomsabreuse · 09/06/2019 23:14

My DS hated the basket. Seems to prefer the starfish.

DD loved it to 6m.

DS has cot next and with base same height as my bed - holding hands through the bars can help to settle him!

Mermaid04 · 09/06/2019 23:16

Maybe I will wait then & see if he continues to grow in length. He’s had a few huge growth spurts. He’s putting 1pound a week on. His head is not far from the top now. He must be a really big baby 😂

@Mermaid04 my DS1 outgrew his Moses basket by 8 weeks. He would t settle in it at all after that obviously uncomfortable. He went straight into a big cot then but with DS2 we had a next2me and he was in it until 6/7 month. Would have been longer but I said my sil could have it for her baby so I decided to move him into his cot / own room then.

Next2me have quite a lot of space in them

Mermaid04 · 09/06/2019 23:22

Mintypea5 are next to me cots a lot bigger than a Moses?

My babies hated the Moses basket (the first two did, I didn't even get it out for dc3). They bashed their hands on the sides doing that startle reflex thing newborns do. I came to the conclusion Moses baskets are stupid unless you need to hide your firstborn in one among the reeds on the Nile. Also there is no one size - mine was small, but some of the newer styles are enormous baskets a toddler could sleep in, essentially a wicker cradle.

Just put your baby in a cot bed, my first two both slept far better in the cot bed (in cot form obviously) than the Moses basket, I moved them both after a few weeks.

If you don't have room in your bedroom for a cot bed then yes, get something smaller. Cot (not cot bed) or travel cot or whatever is approved for the age and fits in the space.

I doubt you have a giant baby unless your midwife or health visitor has expressed concern, lots of people seem to think their boy babies are giants even when they're smaller than the same age girl baby next to them...
