Struggling to update YouTube on DS' phone

Hi

Wondering whether anyone more tech savvy than me can help.

DS uses You Tube on his phone. I generally have it set so it is restricted for mature content (as much as you can with You Tube)

Anyway, he tried to get on the YouTube app on his phone tonight and a thing comes up saying there's a new version to install and the only option it gives is to install it.

However, when it takes him to the Google Play Store, there is a message saying "Parental Controls Restrict Downloading of this Item". I can't work out what I need to do so I can get You Tube working for him again or to install the update? There doesn't seem to be any way for me to get onto the You Tube page on his phone in order that I can log in and take of restrictions while I update.

I wondered whether it was the Qustodio app blocking anything but it's not.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi OP

We're just bumping this one for you. Would you like us to move it to somewhere with a bit more traffic? If so, just report your post to us asking that we do that. Flowers

The easiest way round this is to remove the parental controls, update and then reapply, sadly.

Hi op,

Some versions and instances of quest odio block youtube, as it comes over a social media umbrella. so that may be the issue.

Frankly I have no idea why questodio is this suggested, it has tendencies similar to a malware system, and if it's ever backdoored, it could really be catastrophic.

Hey, I found this thread when I ran into the same issue, and I have a solution for future visitors.

Youtube is currently rated "Mature" on the Google Play store.

These parental controls are managed through Google's Family Link app. Open Family Link, select your child, go to the "Google Play" content restrictions for "Apps & Games", and allow "Mature" apps (or higher).

Once you have enabled "Mature" apps, you can go back to your child's device and update YouTube.

Don't forget to return to Family Link and downgrade the "Apps & Games" Content Restrictions go "General" (or whatever level you desire). This will disable future YouTube updates until you go through this process again.
