After a long car journey at the weekend , my 8 month old DS has now got quite nasty nappy rash.

At the moment I'm changing him frequently, and using Sudocrem at every change.

Anyone got any better ideas??? I'm trying to give it a bit of fresh air but it's difficult, especially as it's pouring with rain outside today.

Thanks in advance

it's fungal if there's white patches on the red bits

makesachange · 20/07/2007 11:36

Not always (sorry to contradict you, don't mean to be rude) but you can get a thrush infection which looks red only. Also of course it may not be fungal, but a secondary bacterial infection of the skin which also needs doc treatment.

I used camomile tea with cotton wool for ds' nappy rash and also put it in his bath. It was absolutely amazing. Someone said not recommended for under one's, but I think they might be referring to the honey -not sure...

its horrible, dd used to try to scratch hers and if I didn't get her in time it would bleed. I waited too long to take her to the doctors I think. She didn't have any white patches but it was still fungal so if in doubt, take him along. Poor little thing, its is so awful.

DANCESwithDumbledore · 20/07/2007 13:30

I would steer clear of bepanthen, it burnt ds's bottom.

weleda baby - calendula nappy change cream. was given as a present and its great. also used special olive oil with oxygen in it(dont know the name) in my old job as a carer..

rabbitrabbit · 20/07/2007 18:42

Calendula is great, I've used that for ages. Also try Kamillosan Cream which is very very good on nappy rash.

kjaysmum · 20/07/2007 20:40

If you do decide to take him to the doctors they can take a swab which will tell you id or what infection is present.

hotbot · 20/07/2007 21:28

ive also found burts bees diaper cream fab, expensive but woth it,worked when sudocrem, etc didnt, also despite its americansed name avaialable in the uk, from a website called slapiton

Sazisi · 21/07/2007 00:05

I just heard or read somewhere recently that putting a teaspoon of salt in the bath water works wonders..I've not tried this myself yet but will be as soon as the next flare-up comes along..

I second the recommendation for Weleda calendula nappy cream btw it even smells lovely!

Flibbertyjibbet · 21/07/2007 00:09

We have always used camomile tea on our boys and its always worked a treat, specially soaking a nappy liner in it before putting next to babys bum. I never heard that it wasn't recommended for under ones, Flame, but too late now, the youngest is 14m! I think its the honey not recommended for under ones, but thats if they are eating it, not having a tiny diluted amount on their bum.

Don't think anyone's mentioned Bepanthan...it's pretty widely available and is brilliant for nappy rash and (IMO) much better than Metanium.

TooTicky · 21/07/2007 00:23

Tui Bee Balme works miracles.

kjaysmum · 21/07/2007 07:06

How is he today Jojay, hope some of these suggestions have helped sooth his condition, it's so awful for them isn't it.
Your suggestion for salt is interesting, Sazisi, when our Ds was at his worst we were referred to a dermatologist, she suggested putting him in the sea every day, we live on a very clean coastline and it was, of course summer, so we did this and it worked amazingly. I guess you could reproduce this enviroment by using sea salt in the bath.

Had some brilliant advice on here for my dd, hers was awful, she scratched it whenever I took her nappy off and it bled it was horrible truly.
I say...
First go to the doctor, I didn't for ages and it turned out she had thrush, I felt dreadful as I felt I had made her suffer for longer. They'll give you hydrocortisone, dakarin powder and vaseline, apply very very thinly with the HC cream, only until rawness has gone I would say, its vile stuff but it works in bad cases....
Second, make sure you are changing frequently enough, I have added just 2 changes to my day and am staying on top of it...
Third make sure the disposables you are using are not full of weird chemicals your ds may be sensitive to, Nature Babies, Moltex and Bambo are chemical free...
Fourth (if you are still reading sorry this is so long winded!!) get some silk liners, someone recommended them to me and I use them at night, they are amazing!
Fifth go for a plain cream, personally I found Sudocream a bit on the strong greasy side for dd, I found that less is more!! The fewer ingredients the less sensitive the area was, zinc and castor oil cream or weleda's nappy cream is great although expensive.
Good luck and sorry if I seem slightly scary in my post, I just know how awful it is and wanted to descibe what I had got rid of dd's and hopefully help you and your ds. Best of luck with it, its not fun xx

Thanks so much for all your messages - isn't Mumsnet fab when you've got a problem??!!

He seems a little bit better today, after a rough night. He woke at about 11.30pm really crying. I changed him as he'd done a poo, and really howled when I tried to wipe his bottom Then woke again at 4 am, but I think that was the little girl next door crying, as his bottom was clean and he seemed quite happy.

I bought some Metanium yesterday and have been using it since yesterday lunchtime - I was at work today and ds was with MIL so haven't really been able to try anything else yet. It seemed quite a bit better when I changed him at MIL's, but then he pooed in the car on the way home and the journey took twice as long as usual due to so many roads being blocked due to the floods (but that's another story) so it flared up a bit again tonight. Still not as bad as yesterday though, no bleeding now, whereas there were little spots of blood yesterday.

Tomorrow I'm off to buy chamomile tea, but unless he makes a miraculous recovery, I'm taking him to the doctor on Monday.

Thank you so much for your support and ideas, you feel like a terrible mother when something like this happens, don't you, but it's nice to know that he's not the frist baby in the world to get nappy rash!!

Update:

After a concerted effort yesterday, his bottom is looking MUCH better.

I gave him lots of nappy off time (little horror managed to poo on my bed when he wiggled off the towel I had carefully placed him on.....)

I bathed his bottom with chamomile tea when I changed him.

I used the porridge oats in a muslin in the bath - doesn't it make the water feel gorgeous? Liked this one a lot!!

Put on Metanium at every nappy change, with a layer of Sudocrem on top to act as a barrier

Changed him every 1-2 hrs.

Not sure which part of all this did the trick ,but the rash is much drier and not bleeding or oozy, and ds slept through the night again, and wasn't disturbed when he wee'd or pooed.

So I'm not taking him to the doctor today, but I will if it flares up again.

Thank you again for all your suggestions - it really helped, and ds is a much happier little boy!

There is a cream called VASOGEN which contains calamine, it takes the sting out of the rash. It's available from Alliance pharmacies. Oatmeal is also good for treating eczema.
