After a long car journey at the weekend , my 8 month old DS has now got quite nasty nappy rash.

At the moment I'm changing him frequently, and using Sudocrem at every change.

Anyone got any better ideas??? I'm trying to give it a bit of fresh air but it's difficult, especially as it's pouring with rain outside today.

Thanks in advance

metanium. I'll get in there before everyone else. It's yellow, it smells a bit funny but it is the nectar of the gods when it comes to nappy rash.

DANCESwithDumbledore · 20/07/2007 07:40

Oh and don't get it on your clothes!

FlameDelacour · 20/07/2007 07:45

Drapolene here - tis pink and again not good on clothes

A bath with porridge oats (wrap them in a muslin and put them under the tap, don't sit him in a bath of porridge...) can be really soothing too.

jojay, if it doesn't clear up in a week or so then take him to the doctors. i spent ages and ages trying to get rid of dd's nappy rash with various ointments and treatments and nothing worked. I took her to the doctor who said rash had turned fungal, prescribed her some cream and it was gone in 3 days.

My hv said metanium to treat the rash and sudocream or vaseline on top to act as a barrier - I know that has worked for lots of my friends.

skirmish · 20/07/2007 07:51

metanium - but it's really strong, someone on here recommended mixing it with bepanthen. It's the only thing that works, and 2nd dances, don't get it on your clothes, stains and WILL not come off!

Jojay · 20/07/2007 08:09

Can I get Metanium from Boots or somewhere like that??

OP posts:

boots or any chemist - my local one stocks it and so does sainsburys

My Ds has ongoing nappy rash, he is very sensative to urine. lots of nappy free time in the house too. As FlameDelacour says with the porridge oats, I put them in a pillow case and put 5 drops of lavender oil and 5 drops of teatree oil on them tie the bag up and squeeze it around lots when running the bath. Lots of barrier cream we use emulsifying ointment, lots of it. We don't use wipes but cotton wool dipped in strong chammomile tea solution with a few drops of St Johns Wort oil which can be bought from a herbalist or a good herbal supplier like neals yard. We always use heaps of cotton wool as it's really important to make sure the skin is really dry before applying a barrier cream. He is so much better now he's nearly out of nappies but still flares up from his night time nappies. HTH, best of luck

metanium is great, yellow box!

does anyone kow what to do if it doesnt work?

my ds has terrible nappy rash (teething) atm but metanium doesnt seem to be working when it always has in the past!

FlameDelacour · 20/07/2007 08:18

Assuming he is in disposables?

Jojay · 20/07/2007 08:18

Will try the porridge oats thing in the bath tonight too

OP posts:
Jojay · 20/07/2007 08:19

Sometimes in disposables and sometimes in pea pods / fuzzi's.

Lavender and tea tree can make it flare up on some children.

Chamomile tea is great, especially with a spoonful of honey in it, but that's not recommended to under ones.

bigknickersbigknockers · 20/07/2007 08:20

Another vote for Drapoline here. I stick with Drapoline because it works for me but I have also heard mums on here saying that Metanium an d Lansinoh are very good too.

FlameDelacour · 20/07/2007 08:21

If you soak a liner in the chamomile solution (I know you don't normally need one with pockets, but as long as its all tucked in it will be fine) and put it in damp, its really soothing. Silk ones have special healing properties too, but some people get upset about silk.

BillWeasleyBeast · 20/07/2007 08:24

metanium definately. If it goes on for more than a couple of days loking really angry it might be thrush

kjaysmum · 20/07/2007 08:31

yes Flame you're right of course, my apologies Jojay, my dose of lavender/teatree was for a big boy in a big bath, I would go very spareingly with the oils for an under one.

FlameDelacour · 20/07/2007 08:39

lol - I am obsessive about mentioning it since I suggested oils to someone and it flared up more

sockmonkey · 20/07/2007 08:42

sudocreme made my LOs nappy rash worse, when I stopped using it, they were fine again in a couple of days.
I sometimes use Kamilosan (sp?) - it's the cream of many uses, nappy rash, cracked nipples, burns, cuts, very dry skin. It smells lovely too.

GColdtimer · 20/07/2007 08:52

sleepless, honestly it is worth taking him to the doctors. Mine suffered terribly whilst I tried everything possible and I mean everything over a period of a couple of months. After 3 days of timoden her bum is clear which is a relief for both of us.

suezee · 20/07/2007 08:52

yeah metanium is the best ever invention for nappy rash........i put it on my ds and then by the next nappy change its practicallu cleared up

SleeplessInTheStaceym11House · 20/07/2007 08:58

twofalls, will keep an eye over the weekend (hes not even out of bed today yet) and if no better will take him to docs. it doesnt look like when dd had thrush and i kow hes teething, its just so sore it bleeds sometimes. poor love!

furrycat · 20/07/2007 09:05

\Metanium's fab but also use canestan, esp if it looks like it might get fungal - ugh. You can buy the one in the red tube but doc prescribed a super-strength one in a blue tube and it was great. Also worth trying canestan if it's fungal

Jojay · 20/07/2007 09:29

How do I know if it's gone fungal?

OP posts:
makesachange · 20/07/2007 10:57

You can't, always, but if it's little red spots it's likely to be - but it presents in a variety of ways. Check his mouth for white spots as well as sometimes a thrush infection can be top to bottom (although this is more usual in newborns - not something I'd expect in an 8 month old).

Rule of thumb - if it's not looking any better after a day of home treatment then take him to the docs.

Home treatment:

  • Nappy off time as much as possible - hours on end if possible. I know, it sounds like madness, but if you can lay towels over the carpet and sit him on a towel or prefold in his high chair to play and eat you can actually have him nappy off for a while. Also you can try just letting him wear a nappy without a wrap (if you're using cloth) to give maximum airflow, and changing it the very second he uses it.

  • Drop the supermarket wipes and use plain water and a cloth or cotton wool, or cold camomile tea (a drop of honey in it is fine for any age - it's just serving honey to eat to under 1s which is not recommended).

  • Use silk bourette liners in your nappies (you can still do this if you use disposables).

I know I'm repeating a lot of the good advice here so apologies, but, really my point was to say that if you've tried all this and it's not improving then pop him to the doctors. Nappy rash can break down really quickly so it's really worth getting it looked at.
