Does a 15 mo need clean clothes every day?

I've been putting DS 15mo in freshly washed clothes and PJs every day but it feels unnecessary. His clothes aren't obviously soiled in any way and it seems environmentally unfriendly and a waste of time to wash everything after one use. Am I just being grubby though?Confused

I always put my kids at that age in fresh clothes and pjs. Were always a mess by bath time lol.

MyNewBearTotoro · 20/05/2019 20:55

I usually change my DCs clothes daily because they tend to get messy but if things are still clean I will put them in them a second day. The same as with my own clothes really - I don’t change clothes just for the sake of it and if things are clean enough for a second wear then they get a second wear.

Pipandmum · 20/05/2019 20:56

Well wow I can’t remember my children ever been clean from one day to the next. Crawling/running around the floor picking up all sorts and food... I suppose if the clothes are clean no harm in not washing.

I'm just astonished that his clothes are still clean. How??

PotolBabu · 20/05/2019 20:57

Hmm each to their own but I like freshly washed clothes every day (I re-wear jeans) and so the same applies for my kids. Especially after their bath at night I like putting them in clean PJs.

sar302 · 20/05/2019 20:59

His vests get a second wear, and pjs a few nights. Obviously only if they're clean.

Everything else is too grubby by the end of the day!

Watchingthetelly · 20/05/2019 20:59

Yeah, I don't know how it's happened but all of a sudden he's not filthy all the time! Grin Jumpers and trousers all clean to look at...but that is to look at only. Not sure how clean they really are.

My experience with 15MO is that between eating with their hands, toddling and falling over and messy play at nursery their clothes are never clean enough to rewear! Pyjamas if she’s got dressed before breakfast often get 2 wears though. If the clothes are genuinely clean, and not just a dark colour hiding dirt, then I agree that it seems wasteful to wash every wear.

Oliversmumsarmy · 20/05/2019 21:07

Mine used to need multiple changes of clothes during the day.

Everything was filthy with paint, food and mud or just soaking wet after jumping in dirty water.

Ds jumped in a gully and slipped under the muddy water.

I grabbed him out and he said it was better than Christmas

Watchingthetelly · 20/05/2019 21:08

Thanks for the responses folks.👍 I'll go with two wears of pajamas and possibly jumpers and trousers depending on the day. I was reading some expert on clothing/environment talking about how we over wash clothes hence rethinking what I've been doing.

I cheat by taking off the cardigans before she eats but I generally find she gets food all over her clothes.

I'm guessing by the time they stop getting messy they start getting BO Grin

WhenZogateSuperworm · 20/05/2019 21:15

Pj’s definitely good for 2/3 days. Trousers sometimes manage 2 days, tops usually only 1. If it isn’t dirty I don’t wash it.

Jamhandprints · 20/05/2019 21:16

I'd actually be a bit worried if he's regularly spotless at the end of the day. Does he not usually play outside/pick up his food/ paint/ play with sand/ water?

Sweetooth92 · 20/05/2019 21:21

Im amazed.
My 16 month old is so filthy by bathtime it’s like a crusty blow by blow account of his day. Snot, paint, food, mud, dog hair, leaves, you name it, he’s wearing it. He looks like he lives on the high street with a dog on a string half the time.

While pjs aren’t dirty as such, I feel he needs rest after being over his nappy all night, but when he’s dry we will reuse. I feel victorious when we come home in the same clothes we start the day in, I’m in awe you manage a whole day and anything is still clean 😂

villainousbroodmare · 20/05/2019 21:23

Cripes, mine need a full change about twice a day!

MatchSetPoint · 20/05/2019 21:28

In my opinion, yes they need to be changed daily, you may get away with wearing PJs twice but depend on when you change his clothes in the morning.

barneymcgroo · 20/05/2019 22:36

If it's clean, definitely rewear. Vests etc often get a couple of days. Pyjamas also a few days.

I also wear clothes for several days - thought everyone did? Or maybe I'm scummy Grin

Watchingthetelly · 20/05/2019 22:45

@Jamhandprints thanks for the concern. Would you like our address so you can ring social services to check up on us?Hmm

He self feeds and makes a huge mess but I put a large smock bib on him for meals which keeps him clean. He loves playing outside but has tired of digging in the dirt and now prefers playing with any hardware he can get his hands on, eg handles, hooks, empty pots. Again this leaves no mess. He has zero interest in painting but on occasions we do it, I put a smock on which keeps him clean. Loves water play but some days he plays in the sink rather than with pots and bowls outside, so again he's left clean if he's only played in the sink. I think the large bib is the key here, I thought everyone did it!

I'm with you @barneymcgroo. I usually wear trousers and jumpers a couple of times but change underwear and vests daily.

Not grubby at all. If my toddler has clean clothes and PJs then I just fold them up and put them back in the wardrobe. There's no need for them to be washed every day! How did people cope many years ago before washing machines was invented? They certainly didn't wash their clothes every day.

MarshaBradyo · 20/05/2019 22:53

16 month dd definitely needs fresh clothes daily

Pjs last a couple of nights usually

TiggeryBear · 20/05/2019 22:57

My 11month old & 3 year old regularly need a completely clean outfit at least once a day. However, usually jumpers & jeans are clean enough for a second wear. I make sure jumpers are taken off at meal times & any particularly nice clothes/pale colours are taken off if we are eating spaghetti Bolognese (for example!) I'm not adverse to washing things after 1 wear as most tops are usually dribbled on (DC2) or soaked whilst handwashing (DC1) and subsequently need washing.
As we're not often tied to times for leaving the house, we typically eat breakfast in pjs & they often get milky so go straight in the wash.

JaniceBattersby · 20/05/2019 23:01

I don’t think a single one of my four children has ever worn clothes for more than a day. Some days there are multiple changes. They are FILTHY.

If you can get away with it OP, then why not? I think wearing a fresh set of clothes every day is a very very recent phenomenon.

Aspieteach · 20/05/2019 23:16

I'm impressed that he sometimes stays clean for a whole day. Totally agree that it's very bad for the environment (waste of water and electricity) to wash clean clothes. Plus you're just throwing money down the drain.

For both children and adults, I think that only underwear automatically needs changing daily. Other clothes only need chucking in the wash if they're dirty or sweaty.

Mrsmummy90 · 21/05/2019 00:28

Dd is also 15mo and I too change her into new clothes and PJ's every day, even though they are never really dirty.
I'm not the biggest fan of mess or dirt and she doesn't like getting mucky so she's always pretty clean but I still think babies wearing the same clothes twice is a bit gross! 😂 no idea why and I have often questioned myself
