Alcohol for teething... opinions?

My 6 month old is teething BAD. Hardly sleeping at night and all the other horrible symptoms that come with it.

I went to Tesco and the lady serving told me she SWEARS on whisky on the gums for it. I have heard of it before, but I've done a google and I can see it is not recommended...

What's your honest opinions? I'm not sure if it's worth the risk but my LO is really suffering, she's exhausted and no medication seems to be working Sad

No I wouldn't. Whisky would burn and it tastes disgusting

Littlefish · 18/05/2019 17:04

Absolutely not!

outreach29 · 18/05/2019 17:05

Don't - that sounds like a really bad idea!! Stick with Calpol

Thallo · 18/05/2019 17:06

I'd be as likely to use alcohol as I would to use this Victorian child's cough medicine

No way!

Sexnotgender · 18/05/2019 17:07

Give your child proper teething medication and drink the whisky yourself.

FlaviaAlbia · 18/05/2019 17:08

No, don't do that.
Have you tried anbesol? It's a liquid so easy to get on the right place and very numbing.

allergyhelpnewbaby · 18/05/2019 17:09

No. Use nurofen and anbesol oil like everyone else.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 18/05/2019 17:09

My grandad says this, but he thinks a dab of whiskey solves everything. Just don’t do it Smile

Astrid0208 · 18/05/2019 17:11

Isn't anbesol mainly alcohol anyway, we found dentinox gel useful too.

LuckyLou7 · 18/05/2019 17:13

My late granny (born in 1900) used to give me a nip of brandy for period pain when I was 12. Even that is dodgy.
Please tell me it wasn't the supermarket pharmacist who advised whisky for your child?

Aimily · 18/05/2019 17:14

I'll probably be flamed for this but there is some truth in it, whiskey actually numbs the gums for a little while and gives some respite to them.

Thallo · 18/05/2019 17:14

Oh there's definitely truth in it but it's still a really bad idea.

HJWT · 18/05/2019 17:44

And then if something happens and you need to take DC to hospital and they ask what they have had are you going to say whisky on the gums Hmm

thewinkingprawn · 18/05/2019 17:46

A bit of whiskey on the gums would probably numb then and not do your child any harm whatsoever. However there are many other aids for teething as suggested above which I would go with. However I wouldn’t over react regarding the suggestion of a tiny bit of whiskey.

PCohle · 18/05/2019 17:50

Are you fucking kidding?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/05/2019 17:51

No! We used teething powder (camomile I think) and a chewy ring.

Powder for child, whisky for mum.

Confusedbeetle · 18/05/2019 17:51

Absolutely not. First, you must be sure your child has not got an illness as teething is often given as a reason for a fretful child. Fever and pain should be treated with infant ibuprofen or paracetamol. ALL local treatments are absolutely useless and just make the parent feel they are doing something, Babies this age often want to gnash on something . The only way you will definitely know your child is teething is when you see a little split in the gum and a tooth emerging. Alcohol has no place in a childs life, it is a poison. You say teething and all the signs that go with it? Dribbling, mouthing and chewing for example are developmental stages and are not signs of teething

Confusedbeetle · 18/05/2019 17:53

I am quite shocked so many posters think its ok. Before alcohol was removed from teething lotion it was said that it was wonderful if the mother took it

dementedpixie · 18/05/2019 17:54

It's illegal to give alcohol to under 5s plus whisky is gross

HollyBollyBooBoo · 18/05/2019 18:02

FFS really?

BiscuitDrama · 18/05/2019 18:05

“I am quite shocked so many posters think its ok. ”
I’m not seeing this?

Chippychipsforme · 18/05/2019 18:13

On your gums? Fine.
On baby's gums? Absolutely not.

ImAwfulWithUsernames · 18/05/2019 18:18

Okay thank you for the responses. The reason I wanted to ask here is because as I said I've heard of it before, so I wanted to know how many people would actually recommend it these days.

I'll stick to the medicine as I can see it is no longer the done thing! Thanks Smile
