When did your baby walk?

My DD is nearly 17 months and still isn't walking. She cruises round the furniture really well, but as soon as I hold her hands or waist to walk independently, she sits down.

She's a really good crawler, and I suspect this is why she's not walking yet. Should I be worried? What do I do if she won't walk, do I ring my HV or GP?

We went to the GP at 18 months, who did a referral, but, as she predicted, he was walking by the time it came through. Now a bright 3 yo. It is hereditary - were you or your DH late to walk?

GlossyTaco · 08/05/2019 11:58

19 months , 14 months and my youngest is not yet walking at 18 months. I'm not too concerned as he cruises along the furniture , stands with very little support and has strong legs for climbing.

madeyemoodysmum · 08/05/2019 12:03

Dc1 14 months
Dc2 10mths
I be had friends that were between 18mth to 2 tho so don’t worry.

@Dinosforall I'm not sure 🤔 I'll ask my mum and mother in law when I next see them!

She can climb the stairs brilliantly, I'm not sure if it's a confidence issue. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Dd was 18 months. I fretted about it for months. In the end she just got up one day and never crawled again.

crazycatbaby · 08/05/2019 12:09

18 months, I was also a late walker. He just decided one day he was walking and that was it 🤷🏻‍♀️

GlossyTaco · 08/05/2019 12:10

I think it probably has a lot to do with her being perfectly happy with the way she gets around op. For example, my son got sick of crawling because he couldn't carry his toys whilst doing so , he now walks on his knees and seems satisfied with that right now.

poweroverme · 08/05/2019 12:12

My ds was 13 months, he's 14 now. People keep asking if he's walking and when he started. When I tell them they always say that's old, and boys are slower. It's actually my dp who fines it rude, I don't give a fig, and tell people there's no rush for him to walk and as it will be me having to run after him in the supermarket Grin

My other dc were 12 months and around about 18 months, maybe longer actually he was happy to crawl and sit in his buggy - he's was the calm baby.

SockQueen · 08/05/2019 12:14

19 months. I took him to the GP at 18m and was referred to paeds but he was walking by the time of his appointment.

CMOTDibbler · 08/05/2019 12:14

Mine didn't crawl till a year, walked at 14 months. My friends twins didn't walk till they were just about 2, and never crawled just bum shuffled. They are all 12 now, and one of the twins is competing at ballet and doing very well, and the other does loads of tap.

Dont stress about it! If she's cruising it is highly unlikely that there would be any issue

Greggers2017 · 08/05/2019 12:33

dd1 at 10 and a half months.
ds1 the day he turned 9 months.
dsd was 14 months.

Marmite27 · 08/05/2019 12:34

11 months and 13 months for mine. Second DC was prem, so would have been similar if not.

Tidypidy · 08/05/2019 12:58

12 months plus one day, 17 months (was very poorly from 13-14 months), 11 months.

Madcats · 08/05/2019 13:12

My DD(11) was a bit like that. We are in a house with a lot of stairs and bannisters and she was happily cruising up and down them holding onto the uprights from about 8 months (cautiously at first). [isn't it great how digital photo albums have dates and location info!].

She decided to start walking at 15 months when we were on holiday, overnighting in a small hotel room (presumably with nothing she felt comfortable holding on to to get around).

I think it was a confidence thing, because it didn't take her long to start running after that. We have had to give her a lot of encouragement about trying new things over the years. I also seem to remember a somebody muttering about it running in families.

LucyBo17 · 08/05/2019 13:20

My DS started sofa surfing at 15 months but would no walk on his own or holding hands. He was 18/19 months before he would walk holding hands. At 21 months now he can walk on his own but doesn't like doing it, he still wants to hold hands or crawl.

I think that if they are late walking then crawling is more instinctive and it will take a while for walking to become instinctive. Also i think when learning to walk at this 'older' age they are less confident with walking than a 9/10 months old as they understand the risks more, so it takes a bit longer.

I was told by my health visitor that so long as they can hold their own weight then they are not too worried and walking will come.

Minai · 08/05/2019 13:46

15, nearly 16 months. He was weight bearing and cruising around the furniture so I wasn’t worried by my god the comments I got as if it was so abnormal he wasn’t walking it used to annoy me so much. They all come to it in their own time. I wouldn’t worry about it until much later

bourbonbiccy · 08/05/2019 13:58

My DS was 10months and he was off, some of my friends children were a lot later.
I think if you make an appointment to get her checked, as soon as the date is nearing she will be walking.

They all do things at their own pace, some say if they are slightly later at one thing it's because they are concentrating on developing alternative skills.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 08/05/2019 14:01

DS1, 11 months and pretty much fully walking straight after taking first steps
DS2 10 months but took a couple of weeks to fully go for it

I know lots who didn’t until 18 months ish though. My friend’s baby is 11 months and has only just started crawling this week, perfectly normal.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 08/05/2019 14:01

I wouldn't worry at all!

bumble270 · 08/05/2019 14:06

I wouldn't worry just yet OP, with my LOs development I always remind myself life would be boring if we were all the same 🤷🏻‍♀️
Does she go to nursery or anything? My LO cruised for ages until she started nursery at 1, 2 days in she was off!

Ex28 · 08/05/2019 14:07

About 17 months. He wanted out of his buggy in a toy shop one day and just started walking!

cranberrymoon · 08/05/2019 14:07

Mine is just 20 months and cruises and finger walks a few steps and stands for a few second unaided. He's getting there but is super chilled.
I'll go to the dr if no progress in 6 weeks or so.

Hairwizard · 08/05/2019 14:15

My dd was 1 last week and no sign of walking yet, not even pulling herself up to stand yet either. Happily belly crawling round the house at the min. Finding myself brushing/hoovering more now 😂😂

Supergrassyknoll · 08/05/2019 14:20

23 months! V late although he was premmy by 7 weeks, don't worry x

Myotherbagisgucci · 08/05/2019 14:37

@bumble270 no she doesn't, I'm on maternity leave with my second who's only 6 weeks old, so we spend a lot of time at home at the moment.
