Hello all, I am looking to see if anyone could help me. I have a 6 month year old child and I am looking to see when I should start introducing solid food. I have looked on google and it says that this is the right time but I am looking for some real opinions from mothers. Can anyone help ?

There’s a whole weaning forum.

Wallabyone · 16/02/2019 11:22

6 months is the right time for the vast majority of babies.

rubyroot · 16/02/2019 11:24

Yes- loads on weaning. People do it differently, you will find your own way according to your baby's preferences. Some start with solid finger food straight away- others with purees. We started with purees. Tried veg which baby wouldn't eat- hated it. Went with fruit purees instead in the end and gradually made it lumpier until he was on proper solid food. Eats quite a bit now at 13 months including his veg

This is the NHS advice

www.nhs.uk/start4life/weaning/?gclid=CjwKCAiAhp_jBRAxEiwAXbniXdmqeEa9zcpnXda02rVluoO9hhKcBfNRQKDL7vcpr3GRrzWzRnJCPxoCQIQQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

It's fine to start weaning from around 6 months though.

Reccy2018 · 16/02/2019 11:27

Start with pureed veg at 6 months, move to thicker mashes and some finger foods. See if there is an 'introducing solids' workshop running in your local children's centre and look on the NHS website

Jackshouse · 16/02/2019 11:29

There is a whole board on weaning. You can either do purées and finger food or just do finger food. Your choice. Check the salt levels of food and no honey before 1.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 16/02/2019 11:41

Start with pureed veg at 6 months, move to thicker mashes and some finger foods.

Or don’t bother and just do BLW.

Reccy2018 · 16/02/2019 12:29

Boobiliboobiliboo

Funny you didn't write any meaningful advice as the first poster, just quite rudely told the op to go to a different board.

You can start with blw, but I didn't and I'm giving advice about what I found easiest. Why don't you did the same next time instead of just being an arse?

Boobiliboobiliboo · 16/02/2019 12:42

I advised (as did someone else) that there is a whole area of the forum dedicated to weaning. Perhaps, just perhaps, all of the answers to their questions may be there? I wouldn’t send you to a police station for medical advise, that would be unhelpful.

And just to be pedantic, you didn’t say that you do that. You gave your advice in the style of an instruction, and there is another way of doing it l, so I merely redressed the balance.

Reccy2018 · 16/02/2019 13:00

The other person also offered meaningful advice. Your one sentence reply 'go to the weaning board' was patronising at best and if you could be bothered to write further advice later on, I don't know why you wouldn't just offer advice initially. Unless you wanted to feel superior.

Why would I offer advice to someone differently to what I did? Most of what people advise here is going to be from their experience, isn't it. BLW didn't work for me, I was too anxious about choking, but enjoyed a few weeks of spoon feeding before moving onto finger foods.

Boobiliboobiliboo · 16/02/2019 13:14

Not what I said.

rubyroot · 16/02/2019 15:50

Haha- can I just say that I had already suggested both methods anyhow. Don't want to break up your argument or anything Wink

Cosmoa · 16/02/2019 21:48

Blw is the best! I absolutely love it 😁

Wallsbangers · 17/02/2019 00:27

There's a new gov website launched on weaning, I keep seeing adverts for it on here. Has your HV not offered advice? We had a weaning visit at about 5 months.

I'm fully team BLW, it's been great for us as a family and easy to do.

niclw · 17/02/2019 13:50

I've found the Ella's kitchen app and purple book very helpful.

BertieBotts · 17/02/2019 13:55

This is also a parenting section which is surely a blanket topic covering weaning too :o

What appeals to you OP? A more structured approach with a plan of what to offer when, or a go with the flow experience?

Is your baby very interested by food or not bothered yet?

Do you like to jump in and get messy or prefer a more serene, slower start?

What kinds of foods do you (and your partner) eat - do you enjoy cooking?

Wait for all the signs of readiness here's a meme. Chose baby led weaning or purees do not mix as this can confused babe. Offer milk an an hour to 45 minutes before meal. Remember tasting is still eating at this age

BertieBotts · 17/02/2019 17:09

^ This is bollocks. They don't need to be able to sit unassisted. They just need to be able to sit upright with support.

Premature babies you must speak to your child's doctor, not go by a random meme. Sometimes it's advised to begin weaning premature babies before 6 months.

You can absolutely mix self feeding and purées. Whether you call it BLW or not is simply semantics. It doesn't confuse them.

user1496701154 · 17/02/2019 18:18

@bertiebotts my child is a fucking primme and they so need to be able to do Thai do they don't choke you know when people give shitty purees and they spit it out this is because baby have not lost Thier younger thursrt and are unable to digest yet

user1496701154 · 17/02/2019 18:19

Also it's not a random meme it's by the app and who maybe before spouting shit on here get your facts right goodday

user1496701154 · 17/02/2019 18:20

It does confused them btw my friend box and her son can't eat properly and he's a year yet my son's a year and a bit and eats properly and can chew and use utensils

pastabest · 17/02/2019 19:42

I've heard rumours that the weaning threads could get heated but in nearly 10 years of being here this is the first time I've actually witnessed it first hand Grin.

User I think autocorrect is trying to sabotage you. You may wish to have a word with it.

Sunflower1989 · 17/02/2019 20:03

Really useful book we have is weaning by Annabel Karmel. It's straight forward and full of recipes appropriate for each stage. I'm a first time mum and think it's useful. Lots of friends swear by it too. Good luck x

user1496701154 · 17/02/2019 20:47

@pastabest I really do need a word with autocorrect 😪

dementedpixie · 17/02/2019 20:52

Of course you can mix purees and finger foods - its called traditional weaning! I did it with both my children with no confusion
