Hi can I give my 4 months and 2 week old baby cow and gate baby rice? It does say on the packet from 4-6months onwards. Just wanted to double check. Think I'm being a bit paranoid xx

Only if advised by a doctor or health visitor. Otherwise no.

GMtoBe · 22/12/2018 18:53

I wouldn't. Milk is all they need until 6 months.

Firstty · 22/12/2018 18:56

NHS advice says that weaning before 6 months is not good for your baby. What do you know that they don't?

I’m sure you will get all sorts of opinions, but my two pennies is don’t bother. Baby rice has almost zero actual nutritional value and is basically the food version of wallpaper paste. You’re better off skipping it completely and when you’re ready to wean, start with some steamed veg, either puréed or not.

Merename · 22/12/2018 19:40

What is making you want to give that now op? Have you had some advice or do you feel you’re seeing signs from baby?

PotteringAlong · 22/12/2018 19:41

No. It has no nutritional value. Wait for another 2 months and use normal foods.

MaraScottie · 22/12/2018 19:42

Want until 6 months like the WHO advise.

Sparrowlegs248 · 22/12/2018 19:44

No, don't give it. Your baby will get more calories from milk. World health organisation advises no food before 6 months.

bourbonbiccy · 22/12/2018 19:49

As others have said. Baby rice has no nutritional value so I would steer clear of this anyway. What is it that makes you think they need extra other than the milk ? Are they showing signs of still being hungry after feeds?
It is so hard to know what's best but your HV and NHS websites are normally a go to place for great advice.

Sandra800 · 22/12/2018 20:41

He's having a feed and then with in half an hour he's hungry again. He's sometimes leaning over wanting some of whatever I'm eating too think that might be something all baby's do I don't know. Also he's constantly chewing his hands

M0reGinPlease · 22/12/2018 20:56

Chewing his hands is not a sign of hunger. Not is being I interested in your food, on its own, a sign he's ready to wean.

Honestly, breast milk or regular formula is all babies need until they're much closer to six months. As others have said, baby rice has no nutritional value. Perhaps he's having a growth spurt. If he's hungry, offer more milk.

M0reGinPlease · 22/12/2018 21:00

Nor is being interested in your food that should say, sorry.

Creatureofthenight · 22/12/2018 21:23

Chewing hands is usually a sign of teething.

Santaisonthesherry · 22/12/2018 21:26

Baby rice is polyfilla not baby filler.
Your baby is putting his hands in his mouth simply because he has learned how to.

MustBeAWeasly · 22/12/2018 21:33

Babies don't know that what your eating is food. They have no concept that the thing you're putting in your mouth eases hunger. At this age they out absolutely everything in their mouths.
6 months is the guideline because the gut isn't developed enough for door. He's probably going through a growth spurt just keep giving milk and start him on proper food at 6 months.
My mil gave me some baby rice at 4 months, it went in the bin the second she left.

Wooooooooaaaaaaaahhhhhhh · 22/12/2018 21:34

He’s probably just having a growth spurt. Just give him whatever milk he needs. He’s discovered his hands, it doesn’t mean he needs food.

Wingingthis · 22/12/2018 21:34

Baby rice has 0 nutritional content as well :) x

SPR1107 · 22/12/2018 21:38

Could you try upping his feeds instead?

SPR1107 · 22/12/2018 21:38

P.S I wouldn't worry that you have given him some... I just perhaps wouldn't bother giving anymore for a little while yet

Thishatisnotmine · 22/12/2018 21:40

The NHS website does have great advice for starting to wean. You need to look out for: being able to sit up well, supported - so if you put him in a high chair he'd be sat up straight; no longer pushes things out his mouth with his tongue; being able to chew and swallow; and get an object from his hand to his mouth.

Once you see all those signs at about 6 months give weaning a try. Dd1 started weaning from just before 5.5 months and mostly blw. Dd2 wasn't ready until she was 6 months and I think we could have left it another couple of weeks too. She disliked finger foods to begin with and we did mashed and pureed food.

At four month you will be pretty much just pouring rice into his mouth, if you wait another few weeks it's easier for both of you Smile

Nothisispatrick · 22/12/2018 21:42

Surely increase milk makes the most sense?

bumblebee39 · 22/12/2018 21:48

Mine had it at that age on recommendation of health visitor (different ones with each kid)

They also had purées of veg or fruit earlier than 6months

*But
*
It was on the health visitors recommendation and they had great head control, well developed gag reflex and some other markers of readiness I can't remember now.

Dc1 was 5 months
Dc2 was 4.5 months

ThankyouwitharecaptalR · 22/12/2018 21:52

I would up his feeds rather than wean early, can he sit up unaided yet?

Bobbiepin · 22/12/2018 21:56

There's a growth spurt around 4 months, up his milk intake. No need to wean early.

NotBeforeCoffee · 22/12/2018 22:08

I wouldn't give baby rice at any age personally.

If he's giving you hunger cues, give him some more milk
