Baby at car seat max weight but too young for next seat!

What should I do?

Baby is five months so is trying to sit up and stand but really can't. He's very tall and solid.
The silver cross rear facing from.birth carseat goes up to 22lbs and it's recommended they stay in that seat until 9-12 MTHS
Got him weighed today and he's 99th for heighstill and 75 for weight but the HV pointed out he's very close to maximum safe weight for the seat and after Christmas he will need to change.

He's my first so I'm very confused. All the ones I've seen for rear he's too heavy for but I'm not sure he can sit up well enough for his head to everyone safe for front facing. are there later stages which recline and go heavier?

Try the maxi cosi 2 way pearl, it’s rear facing and is suitable from 6 months to 4 years

RandomMess · 05/12/2018 20:21

You need to get an extending rear facing seat.

Louise856 · 05/12/2018 20:21

He definitely cannot forward face yet, ideally not until 15 months at the earliest, but definitely not now. Don’t put him in a forward facing seat, very dangerous!

Diono Radian 5 is birth to 25kg and rear or forward facing. You can also joint car seat advice uk for good recommendations.

I have just bought the maxi-cosi axissfix plus for my six month old who is also a big lad. I put him in face in and then swivel it rear facing. I was told babies are five time safer in rear facing seats.

eggofmantumbi · 05/12/2018 20:24

There are quite a few newborn to 4 years rear facing seats. I'd have Browse in Mothercare or similar

Squirrelslostnut · 05/12/2018 20:24

Fear not, you have options :) there are rear facing seats that go from young babies through to toddlers. Whilst I could make suggestions it wouldn't be holistic so I'd suggest joining the 'car seat advice uk' facebook page as they have trained advisors as well as people who use the seats giving you pros and cons

randomsabreuse · 05/12/2018 20:28

You need an ERF 0+ &1 seat. Cybex Sirona has decent recline but not v tall so won't last very well, there's a Britax 0+ & 1 seat as well.

Look at the RF to 25kg seats as you will likely need the height.

Myheartisbeating · 05/12/2018 20:28

Are you sure your car seat only goes to 22lb? Most infant car seats are 0+, which is up to 13kg (28.5lb), and really should last until over a year (my dc was too long before he was too heavy, and was 91st percentile for weight at 5monhs). Otherwise, you want a 0/1 car seat that can be rear facing once they are over 9kg ( a lot of the 0/1s you need to turn when they hit 9kg, so no good for you). We use the Joie tilt, which is rear facing until 18kg. There are others out there though, but I’d say that’s what you’re looking for.

HavelockVetinari · 05/12/2018 20:32

If you can afford it get the Joie 360° - goes up to 18kg and as your DC gets heavier it'll be more and more strain on your back to put him into the seat, this seat prevents that, it's fabulous!

pastabest · 05/12/2018 20:32

Must be a very observant/knowledgable HV to know what your car seat limit was!

Anyway, there's loads of rear facing seats until 4 years old. Most of the big retailers allow you to filter them by rear facing and age/weight on their websites.

WinkysTeatowel · 05/12/2018 20:33

I think the HV has misinformed you, usually the minimum weight for a stage 1 car seat is 9kg/22lbs but it is safest for your baby to stay in the size one as long as possible and if you have the Simplicity this would appear to go up to 13kg/28lbs.

My HV said to me about moving once DD was 9kg too but there is not need to and I would certainly not move a 5 month old out of a Stage 1 unless absolutely necessary. We moved to a rear facing Stage 1 (Maxi Cosi Pearl) at around 10/11 months as DD was very tall.

Spanglyprincess1 · 05/12/2018 20:41

I will join the review sites and harass Mothercare or john Lewis staff for advice. I don't want him front facing yet.
She said she thought it was 22as it was a silver cross and I checked online and it was.
I'd like one I can swivel to rear facing and keep him.in it for as longa s possible even if he gets taller and heavier than he should be for his age!
Good advice everyone thank you!!!!

Often the infant seats are safe as long as their head doesn’t go above the top of it. My ds is about 21lb and 90th centile for height but still fits our mothercare one just fine. We have an ERF seat that goes from 9-25kg so he COULD move up to that, but he doesn’t have to. I suspect your HV is wrong. Just turn your car seat over and look at the label on the back. It should give you all the specs.

Hantswife · 05/12/2018 20:56

I found mothercare completely clueless but John Lewis were fab and took the time to show me the seats on the display car seat too so I could see how they work. Just a note the new regulation I size car seats go on baby’s height not weight.

DJS88 · 05/12/2018 22:34

The Simplicity is to 13kg - around 28.5lbs.

Unihorn · 05/12/2018 22:37

You can get seats that last from 0-12 eg. Joie Every Stage so don't panic. We have the Joie Stages which goes to about 7, but my children are tiny so will probably last them until they no longer need seats

HermioneWaslib · 06/12/2018 08:09

The swivel ones are great but if he’s so heavy he’s likely to outgrow before 4 and then you’ll have to choose between buying another car seat (that goes up to 25kg) or putting him in a high backed booster before it’s safe to do so.

The safest recommendation is to keep children rear facing until 4 minimum.

SweepTheHalls · 06/12/2018 08:58

Brittax 2 way elite is fantastic and suits them rear facing until about 4 or 5 depending on the ciild

Thesnobbymiddleclassone · 06/12/2018 09:03

You need to look into extended rear facing.

Car seats are not based on age! It's the recommended weight stated by the manufacturer or when they're eyes are level with the top. Also shop around and look on sites like Good egg safety as stores such as John Lewis, Mothercare and Halfords have been known to give false/ incorrect advice just to achieve a sale. Also remember to check that tehs eat you decide on is compatible with your car on the manufacturer's fit list.

Baby is five months so is trying to sit up and stand but really can't
It came up into my mind and imagined I find it cute. Grin

metronome1 · 06/12/2018 09:58

I do think your hv might be mistaken. My little girl has been in between 75th and 99th for weight all her life and at 14 months still fits nicely in the silver cross car seat

Spanglyprincess1 · 06/12/2018 09:58

He is super cute! I just put a new outfit I got bought for him on at size 12 MTHS and the legs are too short for him!!
I love ds but he needs to slow down on the growing :)

Youmadorwhat · 06/12/2018 09:58

Try the joie stages I think that can be used from birth. My DS is over 3 and still rear facing in it. It rearfaces up to 18kg I’m sure

Spanglyprincess1 · 06/12/2018 10:01

Great - I'm popping to John Lewis today to investigate
