Baby at car seat max weight but too young for next seat!

What should I do?

Baby is five months so is trying to sit up and stand but really can't. He's very tall and solid.
The silver cross rear facing from.birth carseat goes up to 22lbs and it's recommended they stay in that seat until 9-12 MTHS
Got him weighed today and he's 99th for heighstill and 75 for weight but the HV pointed out he's very close to maximum safe weight for the seat and after Christmas he will need to change.

He's my first so I'm very confused. All the ones I've seen for rear he's too heavy for but I'm not sure he can sit up well enough for his head to everyone safe for front facing. are there later stages which recline and go heavier?

Note that if he's 99th for height then the car seats advertised as up to 4 years will not last nearly as long. We had the Sirona (otherwise great seat) but both DC grew too tall for it way sooner.

If you want to keep him RF as long as possible, then Axkid Minikid is the tallest seat I have found.

Before you spend money you don't need to OP - can we check that you understand what a number of posters have said? Your car seat is to 28lbs not 22lbs? Your health visitor was wrong.

Spanglyprincess1 · 06/12/2018 10:23

It's height and weight. I do understand but he's less than an inch off the head head too and I worry about his safety in the seat.
I will look at a combi seat which grows with them so his height etc don't matter as much.
Hopefully it won't cost the world!!!

If you don't mind telling us where you live, we could suggest where to go for ERF car seats. For example, if you leave anywhere near a branch of the In Car Safety Centre (ICSC), they are absolutely brilliant. They have a good selection of ERF seats and if you book an appointment they will try different seats in your car to make sure you get the best fit.

Ideally you would get a 25kg seat but I don't think John Lewis or Mothercare sell them.

If you're on Facebook, the group "Car Seat Advice UK" is brilliant.

live not leave

Make sure baby is sitting right down in the seat, as low as possible to allow growing room above his head.

Have you removed the seat wedge?

teaandbiscuitsforme · 08/12/2018 06:52

Long term you are going to need a 25kg seat and obviously rear facing is far safer. Places like John Lewis aren't good for this, you need somewhere which knows a bit more about car seats. The Facebook group 'car seat advice uk' is a good place to start.

Ideally you need to max out your baby seat before moving to a 25kg ERF. If you have the Simplicity, that is 13kg weight limit. Also, as a pp said, make sure you're pulling him right down into the seat and have removed all wedges. My DS is 98th centile height and weight and didn't grow out of his infant car seat until 12 mo. If he really has maxed out the silver cross, I'd get a Joie Juva to see you through until 10-12 months and then get an ERF seat.

As for ERF seats, 18kg seats like the Joie Stages and the Sirona are no good for you. Look into the Axkid Minikid and the Britax Two Way Elite. Other options are the Britax Maxway and Diono Radian five.

All the wedges are out! Es okay for now but I think by Feb he won't be so I'm adding a seat to my Christmas wish list (sad but reality of parenting)

How old will he be in Feb? 8months? He might be a bit little but the axkid Minikid would be well worth looking at. You can buy an extra wedge that gives it a little more recline for a younger child. My DS went into it at 10 mo.

teaandbiscuitsforme · 08/12/2018 18:09

Oh and I'm getting a cordless vac for Christmas - specifically for getting Cheerios every morning rather than sweeping! Grin How times have changed...

gallicgirl · 08/12/2018 18:14

Britax two way elite is a great seat and fits nearly all cars. The In car Safety Centres sell them and if you live near to them, then it's definitely
worth a visit to get a seat fixed.

There's one in Milton Keynes, Essex and Belfast. Make it a day out!

Lots of car seats rear face until 18kg now so don't panic - I have two, a Joie stages and a Hauck varioguard.

gallicgirl · 08/12/2018 18:15

And I second the suggestion to get a 25kg rear facing seat. If he's heavy now, he's not going to last a 18kg seat until he's 4.

NeedSleepNow · 13/12/2018 07:45

I'd recommend the in car safety centre too if there is one near you. I've bought all our car seats from there and they have been fantastic. So helpful and they have a huge range of erf seats.

NeedSleepNow · 13/12/2018 07:46

We have the britax two way elite which rear faces until 25 kg.

GenericUsername101 · 13/12/2018 07:50

Look at the Britax ones, I have the Boulevard for both mine - my 99.6th centile DS turned 2 in Oct and I've only just had to turn him round (rear facing weight limit is 18kg and he's 17kg but too tall now).
