What temp is your house? (worried too cold for baby!)

Interested to know what sort of temp you keep your house / living room?

My baby is 10 months now, so not little-little but our house is cold. Its rented so the front door is knackered and drafty and for some reason someone thought it was a good idea to have single glazed french doors in the living room. I'd say at the moment the temp in here is about 17degrees, its 19degrees in his bedroom.

I have the heating on for 3 hours a day, between 6.30-8am and then again 5.30-7pm and it gets a fair bit warmer then but inbetween I'm trying not to heat the whole house unless I need to, just worry about him being cold!

We live in a very cold house. (renting) It's badly insulated with large rooms and the oil heating is quite ineffective unless its on 24/7 which we can't afford.
We've lived here since dd2 was a few months old.
At night in winter I'd say the bedrooms get below 10 degrees.
We've always just layered up and have nice warm duvets and hot water bottles. DD2 is the healthiest child I know so it doesn't seem to have caused her any problems.
I would say the advice on clothing/blankets etc for small babies now seem to be related to warm, modern houses and in a cold house you definitely need more than recommended.

JosephineHass · 21/11/2018 14:49

19 degrees.

blackcat86 · 21/11/2018 15:06

It should be 18-20degrees for a baby. Maybe invest in a gro egg to keep an eye on the temp. After having the heating on in the evening it get to 20.5 and goes down to 18.5 in the morning. We use a 2.5tog cosy gro bag for baby in the winter.

I'd say your house isn't warm enough.
If you can't afford more heating go to town on draught excluding.
You could seal off the french windows altogether. Tape some clear insulating film all over them. Tape across the bottom where you can get a lot of draught and put a rug or blanket across the bottom as well.

Do you have a back door you can use? If so seal up the front door in a similar way. If not a thick heavy curtain hung across the inside of the door will make a big difference.

As PP has said you will be surprised at how cold the recommended temp for baby to sleep in feels! DH keeps telling me off for having the heating on in the evening and turning DDs gro egg red 🙊🙊

Ploppymoodypants · 22/11/2018 00:20

Recommend Reno for baby according to lullaby trust is 16-20 degrees centigrade. Above that temperature is a SIDS risk.
When DD1 was small we lived in a house built in 1800 and it has only a log burner and aga. No heating at all. At night our bedroom was about 10 degrees. DD was fine and slept well and just had warm onesies and blankets. Lullaby trust said much safer than too warm.

When i were a lad i rember the glass on the bedroom windows was frozen, and sometimes a glass of water by the bed might have ice on it yet we survived thats to say my baby siblingsdid that is!

The temps you are talking about seem blamy;!

Milliy · 22/11/2018 02:28

No central heating here. Old cottage in the mountains. Freezing

PaulMorel · 22/11/2018 06:29

Ours ranges from 19-22 sometimes it gets to 23-25.

PeonyTruffle · 22/11/2018 06:45

We have the thermostat set to 20, although not all rooms get that warm thanks to the shitty insulation.

Our heating is on for a couple of hours in the morning and then from 4 - 8pm. If it's chilly, we'll turn it on but try not too.

My MIL has hers cranked right up, it's tropical. My FIL walks round in shorts and tshirt in December because it's so warm in there Grin

stiltonontoast · 22/11/2018 09:11

See our thermostat doesn't seem to work, its like an old fashioned dial and unless its turned to 25 the heating doesn't come on at all, so basically the heating is only on full blast or off. Its pretty annoying.

So the house is tiny, its one front door and the back door is the single glazed french doors, I do think I need to get some of that film to put on the glass though as you can feel the cold coming from them. I couldn't bear to have the curtains drawn all day though, I think I would feel manky!

At night I'm not too concerned about DS because he has a 2.7 tog sleeping bag, babygro and vest on and he runs warm so he's never cold and sleeps through 6.30-7. I think its more during the day when we're home and I feel cold.. think he must be too!

When I say 24 it's that temp down stairs where I leave the thermostat

But then the temperature upstairs is about 21 I guess
And I actually have my radiator off at night
But my son likes it hot
I can't sleep with my room hot

Gradeup · 22/11/2018 21:12

My DD room is normally doesn’t drop below 21 and that’s what I am comfortable with otherwise I worry she’s too cold but everyone is different and she kicks her covers off 18 months

Flowerpower321 · 22/11/2018 21:17

Thick lined curtains will help- windows and doors- I’m miserable below 20 and wouldn’t want a baby that cold despite gro thermometer

MattBerrysHair · 22/11/2018 21:28

When my dc were babies I kept the house around 18/19°c during the day and 16-18 when we were asleep. I was terrified of sids so wouldn't dare keep it warmer. I can't believe people have their houses hotter that 22°! I'd feel dizzy and faint in that heat!

Pollaidh · 22/11/2018 21:43

18 degrees if we're moving around, 20 degrees if sitting and working.

scrivette · 22/11/2018 21:50

Between 16 and 19 here, only one layer on too, if it's cool then we out on another later.

ilovekale · 22/11/2018 21:51

If we are home it's 22

redsummershoes · 22/11/2018 21:53

19 dedrees in bedroom is fine
for drafty doors and single windows try draft excluders (a trouser or tight leg stuffed with old rags) and curtains. or tape bubble wrap to the window pane.

Gro egg currently says 19.1 but it was blue earlier at 15.9, at which point I did close the window and pop the heating on. DS 5 months seems happy enough, today I had him in a vest, long sleeved vest with a T-shirt on top. He doesn't seem to mind cooler temperatures and wants to be naked as often as he can!

OutPinked · 23/11/2018 09:52

SIDS advice is to not let them sleep in a room with a higher temp than 20. Ours averages 20 but can go up to 22/23. Usually around 24 downstairs.
