I'm reading a book called "Raising your Spirited Child" right now. Even though the author uses the term spirited instead of highly sensitive, it is a wonderful companion book to The Highly Sensitive Child.

Just wanted to share

Yes, that's the one!

spirited/highly sensitive children have lots of traits but for instance ds1 is very sensitive to noises, textures - esp food, can be highly emotional and has the energy level of at least 4 children, lol.

Here's one list:

  1. startles easily 2.complains about itchy fabrics on skin 3.doesn't usually enjoy big surprises. 4.learns betterfrom gentle correction than strong punishment 5.seems to read my mind 6.uses big words for his/her age 7.notices the slightest unusual odour 8.has a clever sense of humour 9.seems very intuative 10.is hard to get to sleep after a long day 11.doesn't do well with big changes 12.wants to change clothes if wet or sandy 13.asks lots of questions 14.is a perfectionist 15.notices the distress of others
  2. prefers quiet play
  3. asks deep thought provoking questions 18.is very sensitive to pain 19.is bothered by noisy places 20.notices subtleties in changes(appearances, environment 21.considers if it is safe before climbing high.
  4. performs better when strangers aren't present 23.feels things deeply.

13 or more hits indicates the likelihood of HSC, or much fewer but very strongly.

DS1 scores 20, LOL. He was a ridiculously enegetic baby/toddler, but is a very calm 8 year old ( Thank you God!)

dinny · 19/06/2007 21:38

aren't most kids sensitive?

Greensleeves · 19/06/2007 21:42

Enid introduced me to the HSC idea. I find it quite useful. ds1 scores 23 hits on the list below. I don't feel it's a label that defines him - I don't think it's intended to be - but it does describe him quite accurately and it's useful to me (along with other things) in deciding how to handle him.

dinny · 19/06/2007 21:44

dd scores 23 and ds 21, btw - that's what I mean by my question below....

or is it just both mine happen to be HSC?

LynetteScavo · 19/06/2007 22:47

Well DS2 only scores about an 8. I imagine DD would be similar. Or maybe I have 2 very un- sensitive DC's?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/06/2007 23:00

Thanks Jabberwocky. I am eternally grateful for your introduction to the HSC book.

I will look into this new book - ta. I will send this on to Hunker, who is on an MN break atm.

Have NO idea where Pan is but will email him a link too!

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/06/2007 23:03

DD scores very highly on that.

DS scores very low

Dinny, there are obv degrees of sensitivity, but, I think this deals with the more extreme end of the scale, for those like my DD, who are often given the various unnattractive labels such as; "shy" "introverted" "difficult" "fussy"

VeniVidiVickiQV · 19/06/2007 23:04

I've been on here and there. Just not as much. Although, when I am on here, I do seem to be a bit invisible. Maybe thats why?

How are you doing? Have you made arrangements for the Summer Picnic?

Greensleeves · 19/06/2007 23:05
Greensleeves · 19/06/2007 23:05
