hi everyone. thanks for your comments. tried to keep my own posting neutral, but the title of the thread gives away my feelings on the subject!
My 2 cents:
*If the survey says the difference evens out in the end, why wasn't the headline something like "survey says form of childcare immaterial to childrens development"? The answer of course, is that would not be very controversial. Unfortunately, this type of coverage of motherhood seems to be the norm, and that's the reason I give journalists requesting info/experiences etc on mumsnet a wide berth.
*Agree with all who mentioned how many surveys there are. I think this indicates - if this doesn't sound too melodramatic - a sort of cultural bias against mothers. How otherwise are all these surveys getting funding? Why is this particular subject so endlessly and inconclusively picked over? I agree with Kate Figes comment in Life After Birth where she says that mothers have never been under so much pressure.
*Agreed with all who said there are so many factors impacting child development - so why the constant focus on whether mothers work or stay at home?
*Congratulations to all who seem genuinely to let this stuff wash over them! I normally do but must have been feeling somewhat stressed when I saw this. Although if pressed I would say that I didn't want my child to be 0.0001% behind his peers let alone 10%!
*Finally, bells, yes I so agree about the one-to-one thing - it just doesn't stand up does it in the context of a family with more than one child!
Anyway, we all just do our best don't we?
Thanks for the comments though. Interesting.
