How old were your dc when they came out of their cot and went into a bed?

Hi my ds is 21 months and I was just wondering at roughly what age do the bars come off of their cot and they start sleeping in a bed, either small cot bed like he has or normal sized single.
What signs do they usually give you to show that they are ready to move into a bed? My ds has recently started waking in the night could this be a sign that he is now being restricted by the bars?
Hopefully someone can help me I have been looking after kids for 15 years but this is the first time I have had a cot related question as usually I don't have children at night time!! TIA

My DD was 18 months and it worked well for us and her. She didn't get on with her cot at all, but loved her big girl's bed. DD went into a toddler bed primarily as it fit into her smallish room better.

MuminBrum · 18/06/2007 09:15

I kept DS in his cot until just after his third birthday. I think he would have been perfectly happy to stay in his cot - he really loved it - but he was very pleased to move into a Big Boy's Bed!

jinxed · 18/06/2007 09:16

We moved DD1 at 16 months, she was ready, was getting frustrated by waking in the night hitting herself off the bars.

DD2 has been in hers just a few weeks now, she is nearly 20 months. She too was waking 3/4 times a night having bashed herself against the bars.

Both DD's are in toddler beds!

The signs with DS was that he could climb out - he was just 2. And that was the slippery slope to years of crap sleep.
So, we bought DD the biggest bloody cot we could find and she stayed in it until 2 months ago (she is 3 and 4 months now)

Ceolas · 18/06/2007 09:18

All were different

DD1 about 20 months as we needed the cot for DD2!

DD2 nearer 2 I think.

DS was 2.5. Nobody rushing him along

Don't remember any 'signs'. Thankfully none of them tried climbing out or anything. Just remember they can get themselves out of bed during the night or first thing in the morning!

I've moved both of my DCs to beds when they got too heavy for me to lift in and out of the cot. DS was nearly 3 I think but DD was only just 2. DS went into a Little Tikes car bed that is very low to the floor and DD went into the bed that her cot was converted into so also very low to the floor.
As your DS has started waking up I personalyl would try the bed. You can alwyas revert to the cot if it doesn't work out.

choosyfloosy · 18/06/2007 09:21

Ds was 18 months and had climbed out of the cot only once. To be fair, he seemed to be waking up when he turned over as his arms would hit the sides. But i really thought moving him into a bed would be a GREAT idea and he woudl entertain himself a little in the mornings etc.

Ha ha! Cue five months of absolute horror with one of us having to sit on the bed with him until he slept as he absolutely WOULD NOT stay in the bed for a nanosecond if he were awake. We were wimpoid and would not do door shutting etc.

I would say buy a vast cage and keep them in it until age of consent

imaginaryfriend · 18/06/2007 09:24

My dd is petite and loved her cot. We bribed her out of it at just over 3 and into a normal sized single bed which she's never been quite as attached to. No problems though I don't think she's ever got out of it at night, she just yells if she needs something! (she's nearly 5 now)

speedymama · 18/06/2007 09:38

My DTS are 3yo and 4 months and are still in their cots. They climb in happily at bedtime.

Highlander · 18/06/2007 10:53

16 months. I just couldn't be arsed any more with going to DS in the middle of the night. Far more civilised for him to come to us!

IdrisTheDragon · 18/06/2007 10:54

DS was very nearly 2. DD is nearly 21 months and I am wondering about a bed. Mainly because her sleeping could hardly be any worse .

babygrand · 18/06/2007 10:54

Both in beds by 2. Didn't bother with 'toddler beds' - just got a big one straight away.

Nemo2007 · 18/06/2007 10:55

DS was 13mths and DD1 was 12mths
Ds we knew was ready due to the trying to vault over the side of the cot and use walking in to find him nearly going over head first.
DD1 I moved her as I found it easier to do the change at a younger age. Will probably move DD2 at around 12mths too.

Frizbe · 18/06/2007 10:56

Oh Gawd your all reminding me that dd2 is nearly ready to move......I get the feeling that there will be lots of putting her back in bed going on, sigh.

ChippyMinton · 18/06/2007 10:57

DS1 was 11 months and hated cot, so had cot bed + safety rail
DS2 was about 2.5, and quite happy.
DD was 1.10 (we moved house and she wanted a bunkbed like her brothers )

Desiderata · 18/06/2007 10:57

My ds was about 18 months, I think.

He was certainly ready, that's for sure. There were no problems with falling out, etc., although he does get out every night (about 3am) and ends up sandwiched between us.

I like it though, waking up every morning to his lovely little face.

quokka · 18/06/2007 11:01

18 months for both of them. I moved ds1 becuase I didn't want to buy another cot for soon to be arriving ds2. Have just put ds2 in a bed at the same age because we moved abroad and didn't want to take the cot.

PestoMonster · 18/06/2007 11:05

Mine were a few months short of their 2nd birthdays and I made sure the beds were up and running before they were allowed to leave the cot. A few selected toys were allowed to try out the new beds first, before my dds were. This ensured they were both drop dead keen to make the move to the big bed iykwim. . Never looked back. Did have a bed safety rail fitted to the non-wall side of the bed though, plus I kept an old cot mattress under the bed. I used to pull it out at nighttime, so that it was a crash mat in case they should fall out in the night. (they didn't!)

PestoMonster · 18/06/2007 11:06

btw, quokka, have you been to Rottnest Island?

VoluptuaGoodshag · 18/06/2007 11:07

3 for DD. It was great, she understood that it was a big girl's bed and we never had bother with her getting up.

Don't what DS will be like. He's 2.5 and still in his cot. He moves around a lot in the night so I imagine he'd fall out of all beds and he'd be getting up every 5 mins knowing his nature. Might keep him in his cot until he's 10

quokka · 18/06/2007 11:08

used to go every year from birth! Moved away from Perth 15yrs ago. Not very many people know what a quokka is .

FelicityMontgomery · 18/06/2007 11:12

DS2 was 3.5yrs and Ds1 was nearly 3yrs. They both loved their cot and so there seemed no reason to move them.

With Ds2 we left the cot up and for a while he just occasionally chose to sleep in it again for a night or 2, he could choose where he slept, so no pressure.

He's just turned 4 and we've finally dismantled the cot with him now wanting to give it to his new baby cousin.

He is an unusually freakish child however I think, clinging to his babyhood!!!
My baby.

PestoMonster · 18/06/2007 11:13

Oh quokka, it must have been hard to leave Perth. I only went there once when I was back-packing round Oz, pre-dds, and just loved Rottnest and all the cute little quokkas. Loved the whole country too, tbh!

quokka · 18/06/2007 11:16

its one of my fav places hence the name! Just moved to s'pore from London so I'm getting closer

Diplidophus · 18/06/2007 11:18

DS1 has recntly moved at about 2.4. It was the best decision we made and I wish we'd done it ages ago. He sleeps better now than he has doen for months and rarely wakes in the night. In his cot he was waking nightly and not settling.
