My almost 12month old is getting hysterical and we have no idea why

As title suggests he is having moments where he screams like the world is literally ending. I've so far put it down to separation anxiety as he gets upset when i leave the room but I cant seem to even comfort him much now. Its been going on for 5 days ish. We tried calpol incase of teething but no change.

At night i have to hold him til asleep which can take anything up to 40min then try and lay him down but 99% of the the time he arches his back on the way down to the cot and the hysteria starts again... On Friday night i caved and took him in our bed at 2.30am but he still screamed blue murder until 4.45am. Hes massively overtired now too as a result.
Tonight he was in bed at 7pm and this is my 4th visit to resetlle him. Hes just cried blue murder in my arms thrashing about for 20mins Sad. We're really worried. Any suggestions??

Get his ears checked.
Little children with ear infection are reasonably ok when vertical but in agony when horizontal. They rapidly become distraught and exhausted.

endofthelinefinally · 23/09/2018 22:29

The other thing that causes awful pain in little boys is testicular problems.
Does everything look ok down there?

CryingOverSpiltMilk · 23/09/2018 22:30

No suggestions other than if he's not been this way before and there have been no changes with naps or sleep for this to occur, I remember DD had been like this with tonsillitis and we didn't have a clue for about 4 days. The GP is a good place to start.

bobstersmum · 23/09/2018 22:41

Could be ear infection this exactly happened with dd.

bobstersmum · 23/09/2018 22:45

By the way her temperature was normal the first time as well but when I took her to be checked the doctor said her ear was absolutely bulging on the verge of bursting, she was in agony. She was also this exact age!

Bobbiepin · 23/09/2018 22:49

It does sound like an ear infection but try some teething powder etc too. Sometimes I've found the 'in the mouth' stuff helps with teething better than Calpol. Saying that, Calpol alternated with ibuprofen should help alleviate some pain if it is an ear infection. Don't give both at the same time, but you can give one 3 hours after the other.

LLAP · 23/09/2018 23:01

May be acid re-flux my son had it through until he was 18 months to 2 years. We were prescribed baby Gaviscon. I had to hold him most of the day as it was aggravated when he was lying down and he would only settle in my bed.

Titsywoo · 23/09/2018 23:03

Possibly too early for this but my DD screamed hysterically for hours in the evening when her molars were coming through.

TwoGinScentedTears · 23/09/2018 23:08

What are his nappies like? As usual for him?

Jellybabie3 · 23/09/2018 23:08

Thanks all. He has a gp appointment on tues as he has had silent reflux from birth. He is not showing any other symptoms of this atm though. Ears is something we talked aboit but no indication of pulling/rubbing so we dismissed it (stupid us).

All looks fine nappy bound but thanks for your suggestion!

Nappies are usual to look at albeit they smell rancid. (Worse than usual)

Reflux, earache... When my DS did this very randomly it turned out to be a hair tourniquet on one of his toes (not v likely, I admit, but check his feet just in case?). I have v long hair and one was wrapped round and dug in so much it drew blood.

Like I say though, far more likely to be earache!

AJPTaylor · 24/09/2018 06:22

Dont wait til Tuesday. GP asap.

Limpshade · 24/09/2018 06:39

My DD's nappies were always rancid when she was teething - DH used to describe those ones as "paint-strippers". Are his incisors or molars coming through? With DD, she would be fine during the day but howl with pain at bedtime. Calpol and Bonjela usually helped.

INeedNewShoes · 24/09/2018 06:54

DD, who wasn't a windy baby, started having very painful bouts of wind at night around 11m. She would scream with her eyes closed, absolutely inconsolable and writhing around until a burp came out.

Another possibility but I think you should get an urgent GP appointment today because if it is an ear infection as others have suggested it is very important that it is treated asap.

Veterinari · 24/09/2018 07:09

He definitely sounds painful/in discomfort. GP as others have said

Jellybabie3 · 24/09/2018 08:13

Finally got through to gp so we have an appointment this morn. Hes screamed all night. We are both exhausted

OP posts:
Jellybabie3 · 24/09/2018 08:14

We tried calpol at bed ibroprofen in the night which did nothing Sad

OP posts:
Jellybabie3 · 24/09/2018 10:30

Hmm so the doc said he just has a sore throat and give him ibuprofen. I wouldve thought the sore throat is self inflicted from 4 days of screaming Sad

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 24/09/2018 10:32

Did the GP check him over thoroughly?

steppemum · 24/09/2018 10:38

hmm, keep a close eye on him. Monitor how much he drinks and wees, and if he is still screaming etc, I would take him to A&E eventually.

I normal baby, who hasn't done this before, doesn't just start screaming the place down, unless they are ill/in discomfort.

I have had ear infections missed several times as the ear didn't look red when they looked down.
On one occasion we went home and the ear drum burst a few hours later Sad

Jellybabie3 · 24/09/2018 10:44

Thanks all i will keep an eye on him. He still has an appointment tomorrow with a doctor i fully trust so that brings me comfort. She checked ear throat and chest and just said his throat is pink but mot indicating a viral or bacterial infection. I honestly would think its from all the screaming. He still hasnt eaten much at all this morn so will see how the day goes
