Hipp Organic for Silent Reflux? What's the logic?

CremeDeSudo · 16/09/2018 11:05

I've seen lots on the internet about successes following switching to hipp and resulting in improvements in reflux. Why? What makes it improve?

DS had full on sicky reflux, only improved by being on ranitidine at 4.5mo. I did a lot of reading up at the time so I know it's a physical condition due to an underdeveloped digestive system and they need to grow out of it. By 7mo he was v rarely sick anymore.

I now have DD, she's 3mo. She's suffering from silent reflux which is currently managed with Gaviscon. It's not that bad in fairness and mainly manifests in her being extremely unsettled, and an odd gasping occasionally which doesn't seem to cause her any distress but obviously worries me! I tried taking her off it last week but she doesn't seem ready yet.

Anyway, I wondered about switching her milk as I haven't tried that yet. However I'm not sure if it's worth bothering as I can't see how it would actually help. Any ideas on why it should hypothetically work? Any success stories?

We had success moving to HiPP
Organic having been on cow and gate and aptamil previously. So pleased be did, my LO (nearly 17 weeks) took to it really well, she’s less gassy, can pop and trump
Easily (these were her issues) I would definitely recommend- but every baby is different arent they?!

myotherbagisgucci · 16/09/2018 15:41

Unfortunately we didn't have much luck with HiPP, but we had great success with SMA Anti Reflux.

We also switched to MAM bottles.

We tried Hipp (purely because it was organic, my dd had no reflux) and it gave her horrible reflux with screaming and projectile vomiting after every feed. I didn’t initially know what it was or connect it to the change in milk, so we carried on for a week and it was awful. Once I realised it could have been the milk, we switched right away and it stopped and she never had any other issues again (on cow and gate). So I don’t really think there is any logic to it other than different milks work better for different babies.

We switched to HiPP last week after reading that it helped very gassy babies. We were using cow and gate previously and infacol to help with wind and baby also got reflux. Found that after switching the milk, switching to mam bottles and stopping infacol that reflux really really calmed so much that we don’t need the gaviscon at the moment. Also sit baby up as much as possible when feeding, sit up for a while after feeding and prop bed up. Found that HiPP had an awful lot less bubbles in it compared to cow and gate.

Toastypate · 16/09/2018 20:18

Think it's just the ingredients is gentler on their tummies. My dc1 had silent reflux and i switched to HiPP and was able to stop the gaviscon and Infacol etc which was making baby constipated.
Also used with Mam bottles with are amazing. I decided then if next baby wasn't able to be breastfed I'd go straight to mam and hipp again

CremeDeSudo · 16/09/2018 20:40

Thank you all. We're already using Mam bottles..I've bought some hipp today to try. Hopefully it doesn't make anything worse now! Would love to stop the Gaviscon.

I've found C&G is quite hard to get the lumps out of unless you shake it a lot but then you end up with all the bubbles.

Toastypate · 16/09/2018 21:05

You won't find hipp lumpy. I swirled ours rather than shake and it mixed perfectly

Robots1Humans0 · 16/09/2018 22:05

Another vote for Hipp and Mam bottles, they're magic!

CremeDeSudo · 17/09/2018 18:58

So first impressions - what a stupid box!! Impossible to scrape the scoop without ending up with it inside the box not the bag! Any tips?

Love the formula however - it mixes so easily! No bubbles! And I don't think it's a sticky either?

DD didn't seem remotely phased by having a new formula, so that's good at least.

Wish I'd thought this through though as I have half a tub of C&G left and 4x ready made bottles..

You can get a plastic tub from their website with a plastic leveller. Costs 5.99 I think Smile

Somertime · 17/09/2018 19:46

We used to put it straight into a Tupperware pot for that reason. The premade cartons were worse as I needed to use scissors - just what you want to take to playgroup! It was the only formula DS could drink so we just had to whinge but use it.

LemonLadybird · 21/09/2018 16:46

Hi @CremeDeSudo! I've recently started changing my baby on HiPP too (was on cow and gate) She was extremely constipated on C&G, so much so that even medicine from he doctor didn't help, so somebody recommend HiPP to me. How's your baby doing on it? She had a great bowel movement after one feed! She's so gassy on C&G.

I also hate the cardboard box. So once baby has finished he C&G I'm thinking of putting the powder into the empty tub. Apparently with the plastic box you can buy, you're not allowed to put the powder in without the foil packet 🤷🏻‍♀️

CremeDeSudo · 22/09/2018 21:11

Hi @Lemon! I went back to C&G as we had half a tub left and we came down with a nasty cold and she was a bit sicky, so I didn't think it was a fair comparison. Today is the first full day back on Hipp. So far so good. Sticking with the Gaviscon in 3 of 5/6 bottles for now too but will reduce that and see how she gets on. Keep us posted! I've poured the Hipp formula into the C&G tub now it's empty!

I bought just a milk powder one which is airtight and you can tip the milk in, it wasn't the hipp one just one off Amazon and it keeps the milk fine, I only put one sachet at a time in 😊

Another hipp lover here, worked wonders for my little one and you can really see the difference between milks!

MyBambi · 22/09/2018 21:21

I use Gaviscon for my DD too.But I use the Hipp comfort one because the Gaviscon makes her constipated.I tried other brands for reflux and it was always lumpy. But if Hipp reflux doesn't go like the others I will also give it ago.Good brand Smile

LemonLadybird · 23/09/2018 00:20

@CaptainCorrigan Would you mind linking the tub you use please? Smile

@CremeDeSudo Happy to keep you posted! Glad your LO is doing better! Love how much less foam the HiPP milk has, and if it's a little bubbly it settles almost instantly! She's fully on HiPP now and is finishing all her 5oz feeds, before she would struggle. She's so fussy on a night time usually, tonight she was a little whingey but nowhere near as bad. I'm honestly amazed, fingers crossed! Stupid question but I couldn't get all the powder out my C&G tub, it collected on the foil rim inside - do you think it'll be ok?

Amberheartkitty · 23/09/2018 00:25

My baby was terribly sick. Hipp organic was the only milk she kept down.

You get 2 tubs, a small and a big. The tub doesn't actually come with the faces on either they're stickers so you don't have to have them on there!

bAY6Hill · 23/09/2018 21:52

My lo would scream bloody murder when he had gas and pretty bad reflux. It's also a sudden out of nowhere high pitched scream. He'd calm after I give him Babies magic tea in bottle and a gentle tummy massage.

CremeDeSudo · 25/09/2018 09:08

Baby is definitely getting wind out (top and bottom!) more easily! So far so good. Not brave enough to try without Gaviscon yet..

Love those tubs! If we keep it up I'm def getting some!

OP posts:
CremeDeSudo · 30/09/2018 15:46

@captaincorrigan does the formula tub have a bit to scrap the scoop level? Doesn't look like it from Amazon pics..

Sticking with Hipp now! I'm not sure it's made a huge difference to DD except perhaps she's pooing more regularly. I think perhaps wind might be coming up more easily but hard to say as it could be age. I prefer the formula itself mostly to be honest as I like that it doesn't need shaking!

OP posts:
CaptainCorrigan · 30/09/2018 18:31

No it doesn't but I just use the handle on an old scoop

23ais · 06/10/2018 17:34

How long did it take for you to see improvements when changing formula? Have changed from aptimal comfort to hips organic as of yesterday, feel as though it's actually irritated the reflux ?is that possible after only about 4 bottles? Or is there truth that it takes a week for old formula to get out of system?

CremeDeSudo · 06/10/2018 17:49

I would expect to have noticed by now if your baby has reflux. Is it bad reflux? What about hipp comfort? DD is still on gaviscon but only in her bedtime bottle x

23ais · 06/10/2018 18:07
