Hello!

Hope you're all well. Wasn't sure where to post this.

Just curious about my daughters eye colour. She's almost 4 months old and they are still this really dark blue colour and I'm wondering if they will turn brown! I know there's no set time and it can take years in some cases.

When the light shines through them from a side angle they look a brownish/bronze colour but from straight on they're still deep blue. Has anyone else ever noticed this? Is it a sign they may turn brown do you think?

Most of my other halfs family have brown eyes. Except for his parents. He has brown skin, black hair and dark brown eyes but both his parents have light hair and eyes. His great grandfather on his mother's side was Indian so he has a sleeper gene that skipped 3 generations!! Oh and on his father's side his great great grandfather was African-Portuguese.

Most of my family, including me, have blue eyes (except my Dad who has green).

When did your children's eye colours change?

DC3's were like that for a good six months or more (sorry, she's the third child, I get vague on timescales) and did eventually turn brown -- but a relatively light brown verging on hazel, compared with DC1's darker brown eyes which just turned brown by 4 months or so.

Cutesbabasmummy · 06/09/2018 15:04

My son's didn't finally turn brown until he was about 7 months. they were dark blue when he was born, then grey and then brown x

MiggledyHiggins · 06/09/2018 15:33

DS's eyes changed quite late -around 14 months I think.

Haha I know, I'm just gonna have to be patient aren't I!

It's just so fascinating and I'm dying to know! I didn't think I'd get an answer by posting this.. I just wanted to find out how long it took for others ☺️

And I was curious to find out if others had noticed the brown tint from the side angle..

that is still the classic grey color that most babies are born with. if you see a hint of brown from certain angles then it's highly likely they will become darker as your little one ages.

Waitingonasmiley42 · 07/09/2018 22:04

Both of mine changed by 8 weeks. DS2 was probably closer to 6. Both are hazel.

RagamuffinCat · 07/09/2018 22:06

It's a waiting game, but she is a beautiful baby!

Mummyfran121617 · 07/09/2018 22:15

Yeah ive always noticed that its amazing how genes work lol :p

feltpens · 08/09/2018 03:16

Oh my she's adorable! 😍

Sorry- no help on the eye colour. DS are blue and I'm hoping they don't change 🤞🏼

RedDwarves · 08/09/2018 03:42

She's very cute. I don't think her eyes look like they're stay light. Most likely she will end up with hazel or brown eyes.

Theworldisfullofgs · 08/09/2018 03:43

Brown eyed gene is dominant over blue so your baby is more likely to have blue eyes.

MountainPeakGeek · 08/09/2018 03:54

She's gorgeous. Smile

I don't mean to hijack your post but both of mine were born with already deep brown eyes. Is it unusual for babies to not start with blue eyes?

feltpens · 08/09/2018 03:59

@Theworldisfullofgs I believe the blue eye is dominant.

feltpens · 08/09/2018 04:01

@MountainPeakGeek I'm wondering if it depends on your heritage. I think most babies are dark eyed. Apparently it takes a year for a babies eye to get to their actual colour.

lifechangesforever · 08/09/2018 04:26

My daughter's (7 weeks) are exactly the same. Dad has blue eyes and I have really dark brown eyes. Some days I think hers are turning brown and then others they're definitely blue again, albeit a very dark and deep blue.

Sometimes they even look a marbley green colour!

I always thought that my dark genes would take over (dark eyes, hair, olive skin) but she's definitely fair skinned and has a ginger tinge to her hair like her dad.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 08/09/2018 05:21

My son had grey eyes until.he was almost a year, then they started to.turn. By the time he was aboit 15 months they were definitely hazel.

My niece had really blue eyes. Not grey, but bright blue. That lasted until she was about 6 months tgen they gradually changed to.mid brown.

PhilomenaButterfly · 08/09/2018 05:26

Both my boys had dark blue eyes at birth and they turned brown.

VickieCherry · 08/09/2018 05:46

@MountainPeakGeek It is unusual but not unheard of - I was born with dark brown eyes and they stayed.

Cosmoa · 08/09/2018 07:18

Thank you for the lovely comments! 😊❤️

I have a feeling that they may go darker.. Mainly because my friends who have blue eyed babies (also born recently) have this light blue ring around the pupil but Raya doesn't.

I've read that Caucasian babies can take longer to get their brown eyes compaired to Asian for example. But I have come to realise that that's not always true!

I'll have to try and remember to update this thread if they (or don't) do change 😊

@EmmaGrundyForPM

That's unusual about your neice having very blue eyes and then brown. So interesting!

@lifechangesforever

Yes it'll be interesting to see what her complexion will be like by the end of next summer when she gets some sun on her skin! She's very fair compared to her Dad at the moment but he has lovely brown skin and I tan well so we shall see! Also I had dark hair like her when I was born but it was white blonde by my first birthday but her Dad's has always been black.

Can't wait to see how she changes over time 😍

I have olive skin and dark brown eyes, but my son has greeny-blue eyes like my DH, and he is almost two now so don’t think they’ll change - brown eyed genes aren’t always dominant!

TheLandsWhereTheJumbliesLive · 08/09/2018 11:33

The brown eyed gene is always dominant over blue, which is a recessive gene, but it's more complex than that. For example I have blue eyes, both my parents have brown eyes, they each had a parent with blue eyes.

My daughter has blue eyes like me, my son has brown eyes like my husband.

LinoleumBlownapart · 08/09/2018 11:45

I have 4 children, DH has dark brown eyes, dark hair and olive skin and I have green eyes and I'm fair. One was born with dark brown eyes with patch of green in one eye and black hair, his eyes never changed but his hair was mousy blond until he was 7, now it's dark brown. Two were born with green eyes that went dark brown by 1 year, one was born with light brown hair that's still light brown, the other had black hair and that's now mousy blond at the age of 5. One was born with blue eyes that went green at 6 months and then developed a hazel ring around the green at around 2 years, now they change depending on his mood, sometimes green and sometimes a little hazel. He was born with white blond hair and olive skin, his hair is still very blond at 9.
