5 week old - low temp and won't wake for feeds

Angeliki159 · 03/09/2018 03:53

My 5 week old strains all day and during naps he wakes up startled every few mins (the falling reflex thing I think) so bot really managing to sleep.
When he eventually does fall asleep at night he sleeps really heavily.
Can't wake him long enough to feed. He opens one eye or stirs a bit then konks out again.
This also happened this afternoon - fed at 4.30pm. Missed his 7.30 feed. Eventually woke him at 10.30pm
Was grunting and farting loads till about 1.30am
I tried waking him at 2.30am for his feed - nothing
Tried again at 3.30am - nope.
When I tried waking him at 3.30 I checked his body temp as the room is 23c at the mo and thought he might be hot but he was cool to touch on his chest.
Wrapped him in a thick blanket for about 30 mins and took his temp. Was 35.4
Changed him but still only stirred.
He is wearing a vest, a long sleeve/long leg onesie and a cellular blanket is over him (unfolded).

Should I be worried/call the doctor??

At 35.4 and not waking I think I'd go to A and E to be honest.

Angeliki159 · 03/09/2018 03:57

I don't know if I'm meant to leave him till he wakes up for food naturally?
Longest he has been between feeds because he wouldn't wake up is 10 hours.

Worrying me.

If it's worrying you please go and find some help, it's better to be safe and make sure everything is fine. In your position I would be seeking medical assistance/reassurance x

Oh gosh. Your baby sounds listless and weak. I'd call a doctor immediately and go to A&E if you can't get to a doctor in the next couple of hours.

chardonm · 03/09/2018 04:05

Go to A&E immediately!

Mojitomogul · 03/09/2018 04:06

Straight to a and e with a temperature that low! Under 36 is beginnings of hypothermia

scatteredglitter · 03/09/2018 04:06

I would take him to the hospital or get him checked is there ooh or
What is his total feed volume over the day ?
I don't know how much he should be getting but in order to maintain his blood sugars etc he need to be getting a certain amount - I would get him checked out,
If you can't wake him right now and he hasn't fed in a while i would bring him to have him checked some babies do need waking for feeds. A lot depends on their starting birth weight their weigh gain and how much or well they are feeding through the 24 hour cycle.

SleepWarrior · 03/09/2018 04:14

Absolutely go to A&E.

At that age then even if it's nothing they will all tell you that you did the right thing bringing him in. There's no such thing as too careful with a newborn, plus you are feeling worries and your instincts are there for a reason.

I hope all turns out to be OK Flowers

AssassinatedBeauty · 03/09/2018 04:26

Echoing everyone else to please get him seen by a medical professional as soon as possible. He isn't feeding anywhere near enough and the lack of rousing to feed/low temp is alarming.

PrincessConsuelaBannanaHammock · 03/09/2018 04:30

Agree with pp I would take him to a & e. It's worrying that it's so hard to wake him. Trust your instincts & have him seen. Hope all is ok Flowers

Bumblealong1 · 03/09/2018 04:41

Good luck OP.

JustWingingIt16 · 03/09/2018 05:01

i would call out of hours or take him to a and e.

i got advised when my DS was born to not let him go longer than 6 hrs through the night for a feed.

he would normally wake up around the 6 hr time, but now again i would have to wake him to feed him. he just loved his sleep.

hope everything is OK with your little one x

Angeliki159 · 03/09/2018 05:14

Thanks everyone.
I called 111. Typically they need him awake to be able to ask their questions. Managed to wake him up eventually and he was gagging for his bottle.
As soon as he wok up his temp started going back to normal.
They told me to speak to his gp in the next 6 hours so I'll make an appt as soon as they open.

111 we're not concerned at all and actually told me I can't force a baby to feed (as if!!)

I'm still concerned that his temp drops when he sleeps.
He's asleep now and is already feeling colder.
And concerned that he is going so long between feeds sometimes.

He was 5.3 when he was born
3 days late. Emergency c section as his heart rate was dropping after contractions.
He was fine once he was out. No problems at all.
Day 5 he had gone up to 5.8lbs
Day 14 weigh in he was 6.8lbs
Next weigh in is not for 2 weeks.
He has around 150ml 7 times a day (roughly.) But 2 of those he missed. (Sometimes he falls asleep after having 60ml and he's done)

In this instance I would ignore 111 and go to a&e, they won’t blame you for bringing him in. You can’t be too careful. He needs to be looked at by a paediatrician, not just a general practitioner, no offence to GPs. Good luck OP.

takethatwasmyjam · 03/09/2018 05:23

I'd go to A&E anyway. You have nothing to lose by being careful. When my ds was a baby my doctor said he'd rather I brought him in anytime I was worried, nothing is worth the risk with a newborn.

sawbucks · 03/09/2018 05:24

Go to A&E, regardless of what 111 said.

redcaryellowcar · 03/09/2018 05:25

I'd go to a&e too, a baby that young not waking regularly for feeds is very concerning. The temperature fluctuations are also concerning. Please take him now.

BeautyBox · 03/09/2018 05:34

6 hours seems like a really long time to go between feeds. He sounds quite small so I would expect him to need more regular (perhaps smaller) feeds than every 6-10 hours.

Please ignore 111 and go to A&E. Your instinct as a parent that something isn't right should not be ignored

GinIsIn · 03/09/2018 05:35

I called 111 in near identical circs and they sent an ambulance straight to A&E - please go in!

GinIsIn · 03/09/2018 05:36

I don’t want to alarm you but when you get there make sure to ask for them to run an ECG and EKG

gilmoregal · 03/09/2018 05:39

Ignore 111 and go to A&E

I know you've said temp improves when awake, but worrying it's dropping when asleep it could be absolutely nothing but with the difficulty feeding and listlessness best he's monitored by a paediatric doctor not just seen at GP.

Angeliki159 · 03/09/2018 05:41

111 told me to put a hat on him to sleep if he is cold. I thought they shouldn't sleep in a hat because of SIDS?
It's 24c in the room now. I'm chilly tho.
I have put a thicker blanket on him and he seems ok but I'm gonna check his temp in a few mins to see if there is any change. His cheeks are still chilly but his chest seems warm at the moment.

OP posts:
feesh · 03/09/2018 05:44

Go to A&E! Now!

gilmoregal · 03/09/2018 05:47

Only put a hat on if you're completely supervising a nap so not going to sleep yourself, my son was low birth weight and born during February snow this year and had to wear a hat in the house until he got back over 5lb.

Also it's awful advice imo as if you're needing to put a hat on in the house something isn't quite right!

Please just go to A&E they'll never be dismissive of such a newborn and it's always better to be over cautious.
