5 week old - low temp and won't wake for feeds

Angeliki159 · 03/09/2018 03:53

My 5 week old strains all day and during naps he wakes up startled every few mins (the falling reflex thing I think) so bot really managing to sleep.
When he eventually does fall asleep at night he sleeps really heavily.
Can't wake him long enough to feed. He opens one eye or stirs a bit then konks out again.
This also happened this afternoon - fed at 4.30pm. Missed his 7.30 feed. Eventually woke him at 10.30pm
Was grunting and farting loads till about 1.30am
I tried waking him at 2.30am for his feed - nothing
Tried again at 3.30am - nope.
When I tried waking him at 3.30 I checked his body temp as the room is 23c at the mo and thought he might be hot but he was cool to touch on his chest.
Wrapped him in a thick blanket for about 30 mins and took his temp. Was 35.4
Changed him but still only stirred.
He is wearing a vest, a long sleeve/long leg onesie and a cellular blanket is over him (unfolded).

Should I be worried/call the doctor??

111 are giving you really bad advice. He shouldn't have a hat on to sleep, and he shouldn't be going so long without a feed. 5lb3 is classed as low birth weight, my son was 5lb3 and I was told not to let him go longer than 4 hours without a feed for the first few weeks. Please get him to a doctor, preferably A&E.

Almostthere15 · 03/09/2018 05:48

I think I would take him to a and e. Realistically if you can't get through at the docs that's a lot longer than 6 hours and his temp sounds really low. At 5 weeks old he sounds like he is going too long between feeds and bring listless is concerning. I hope everything is fine

BirthdayBlueBo · 03/09/2018 05:52

Advice from 111 is not good op I really urge you to go to a and e too please.

A low temp is just as bad as a fever in small babies. Get to A&E.

LorelaiRoryEmily · 03/09/2018 05:53

Honestly op I would just go to A&E now. Not trying to scare you but when our ds was 7 weeks old we had a bad night where he wouldn’t sleep and seemed a bit off, cranky and not comfortable with a high, I was alone as DH was on nights. , my mother said he was just a baby and I was panicked as did mil when I insisted on going to the hospital, DH agreed with me. When we left the house at 10am his temp was 38, 30 minutes later at the hospital it was 39.5 and his heart rate was 199, he was put straight on antibiotics for bacterial meningitis had a lumbar puncture that night and we were told he almost certainly had it, it took 4 days for the lab to confirm that it was viral meningitis, which it very dangerous for babies,if we hadn’t brought him in god knows where we’d be. I’m honestly not trying to scare you but please go now. Don’t wait any longer

Please go and seek advice- from personal experience ask them to check his blood sugar
You could be describing a baby in hypo
We had the same and thought we were lucky to have a chilled baby who slept a lot / missed feeds
It takes seconds to check blood sugar

SnuggyBuggy · 03/09/2018 06:03

Go to A&E, don't mess about with this

PhilomenaButterfly · 03/09/2018 06:04

Yy go to A & E! He sounds very ill. Flowers

Please get home checked by a neonatologist
Are you being linked in with a neonatologist where you have birth ? Does the maternity hospital have a clinic you can contact ? His birth weight is small, again I don't fully know your circs but I would want him checked - a full work up.
There is advice about how long a baby should go when they are that small between feeds did anyone say this to you ?
Go to a and e in your nearest paeds hospital or maternity unit that has neonatal follow up. Don't hang about get it checked and you ll not have to be worrying about it
Also remember strangers on the internet can not diagnose anything - your baby and your and their medics history need to be taken in to account so go get it checked by a professional

scatteredglitter · 03/09/2018 06:07

Also if your baby can not regulate their own body temp then maybe they need medical help - at 5 weeks it s not usual that baby can not regulate their own temp and it s against safe sleep guidance to put hats on them

bananasandwicheseveryday · 03/09/2018 06:08

The fact that you've called 111 about a baby who is hard to rouse from sleep and they've said they can only to through their questions if he's awake, should tell you all you need to know about the 111 service!

YOU are his mum and if you are concerned, which you clearly are, then I would trust your instincts over their questionnaire. Take him to a&e, they will not be cross at all. They would rather see a hundred healthy babies than to miss one who has a problem.

TanteRose · 03/09/2018 06:11

OP, trust your instincts.

Babies can get very poorly, very quickly.

Good news is, they often get better very quickly too, once they get proper treatment.

Please take him to hospital

franchesco · 03/09/2018 06:30

Take 111 with a pinch of salt. They are dependent on what you tell them. I would want my baby physically examined by a paediatrician if they were acting as yours were.

NotSoThinLizzy · 03/09/2018 06:35

My DD did this when she was little slept the whole time lost a lot of weight. Get him checked over call your health visitor if you can't take him to hospital. He really should be feeding every 2/3 hours

takethatwasmyjam · 03/09/2018 06:37

Op everyone on this thread has said go to A&E.

brizzledrizzle · 03/09/2018 06:38

Ignore 111. Get an ambulance. My son had hypothermia and it was awful (he's a strapping teenager now)

stressedtiredbuthappy · 03/09/2018 06:41

Why are you still not doing something, you first posted 3 hours ago! Take that baby to hospital now!

farfallarocks · 03/09/2018 06:43

Low temp can also be a sign of sepsis

youaremyrain · 03/09/2018 06:45

My baby did this and he needed urgent medical help, he was admitted and put in an incubator and on intravenous antibiotics for days. Please call an ambulance or go straight to A&E

Imknackeredzzz · 03/09/2018 06:47

For gods sake take the baby to a and e! 111 are beyond useless and not medically trained!

QuilliamCakespeare · 03/09/2018 06:48

10 hours without a feed- was that at night? Either way, that is highly unusual for a newborn and I'd be very worried. My friend's little boy was similar at 3 weeks ago and was re-admitted to hospital and treated preventatively for meningitis until they established what was wrong (just an unknown virus in the end). I'd be going to A&E with a newborn that couldn't be roused and I'm a now fairly relaxed Mum since having my second.

StopPOP · 03/09/2018 07:18

Echoing A+E, trust your gut

MacNcheese87 · 03/09/2018 07:25

Defo A+E

Would 111 suggest waiting until a person who's had a fall regains consciousness before asking any questions?

The drops in temperature could be very significant, I would worry about mine if they were that young and anything at all was off. They're SO vulnerable at that age.

Go to A+E, they'll understand if it's nothing.

FranticallyPeaceful · 03/09/2018 07:47

Absolutely A&E. He’s a newborn so you’ll be seen straight away anyway

Cantstopworryingaboutit · 03/09/2018 07:51

Please go to A&E Sad
