Did anyone’s baby only eat while asleep?

LowKeyKoala · 20/08/2018 21:36

My LO has been feeding only when asleep for the past 6 weeks now abdvis nearly 5 months old.

After being back and forth it turned out they were tongue tied and this was snipped at 16 weeks. Things have not improved and it really does seem like an aversion rather than anything Medical as they will feed when asleep.

I’ve seen online a few forums with many parents going through a similar thing but never seen a resolution or outcome of if they got better or just had to wait out the year.

So has anyone else been through this? What was the outcome? Is anyone going through this now?

Any help or advice would be much appreciated

Is your baby showing and other symptoms? Crying when feeding awake, arching, coughing etc etc? My baby had cmpa and reflux which was why he was only feeding whilst sleepy or asleep as I guess the tummy gas and pain could.be ignored better, now on neocate and he feeds happily whilst awake now x

JiltedJohnsJulie · 22/08/2018 22:11

I was going to ask about CMPA too OP.

LowKeyKoala · 22/08/2018 22:35

Reflux was diagnosed, so we were told to use aptimil anti reflux milk. All those symptoms were present and now pushing away the bottle too!

I don’t know what CMPA is? I’ll have a look.

Thank you for your responses x

Ahh yes I asked if it was an allergy but apparently because no rashes or any other symptoms they dismissed that.

Ive been told so many different things by different people... we have literally every bottle from supermarket own brand to expensive dr browns, lansinoh etc tried different milks but then told not to change milk. I’m at a loss other than to dream feed.

Weaning early is something we will be doing however they obviously still need milk (minimum 16-20oz in 24 hours) until 1 year old

OMFG that's exactly what I was told! By 5 different health professions!!!! quotes 'your baby doesn't have a rash and isn't vomiting' my Bubba was in agony from his tummy and was also coughing, hicupping, sneezing, crying whilst feeding, only feeding whilst asleep. I'm formula feeding, I tried aptamil, then he was switched to infatrini for high calories, but was still awful. They said it was reflux so I'm giving him omeprazol (very little difference). I forced them to prescribe me neocate to try out ( for cmpa). One week later he is ravenous and feeds happily whilst awake. It took 4 months of my poor baby being in pain and feeds took 1-1.5 hour EACH. I went to the GP crying it was so awful. Intolerances don't show up on testing, in my case I think it was an intolerance rather than allergy as he was showing Alot of the symptoms but because he didn't have a rash and wasn't vomiting they bullshitted me with the reflux exccuse. I also tried
Swapping bottles
Infacol
Colief
Every angle of feeding
NOTHING WORKED.

Switched to neocate and omfg I have a different baby, feeding take a normal 20-30 mins rather than a painstaking hour and a half of crying arching, force-feeding etc etc x

www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/childrens-health/what-should-i-do-if-i-think-my-baby-is-allergic-or-intolerant-to-cows-milk/

It's a cows milk protein allergy or intolerance, quite common, in my case my son mainly had belly ache so was feeding whilst asleep to ease the pain, what is you dd like feeding whilst awake? X

El this is exactly the same I’m just looking up neocate now!!

My LO will flat out not feed when awake. Goes from happy chatty smiling laughing to going red crying arching back.. as horrible as it sounds I videoed it and showed doctors, the health visitors all saw me feed and was told it was probably a fussy phase or reflux Angry

It’s jidt so hard I understand they can’t specialise in everything but I’d been so so so many times

SNAP! My baby is super smiley, it got to the stage that he'd turn his head away amd cry the moment I got the bib near him! Poor little soul! Ive been advised to start on neocate, it could take up to a month to work(though it was immediate for us and within 5 days he was a dream). Then to go on to nutramigen in a month, (this has cows milk protein in it, HOWEVER it's broken down so easier to digest, unlike say aptamil when it's not broken down. If he goes back to being bad stay on neocate but if he's okay I have to go on to nutramigen.

El1995 · 23/08/2018 20:59

Oh on buying it, ring around the pharmacies, some won't sell it to you without. A prescription, others will x

El1995 · 23/08/2018 21:01

Sorry for so many messages lol, it apparently tastes vile and Lil man only drinks it with about 10ml of prune juice in it just to sweeten it a bit, I went to GP loads aswell, at least if you buy one tub and try it, if it works you can get it prescribed

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/08/2018 21:21

Sorry I haven’t read the whole thread but whoever told you it can’t be an allergy is wrong. There are 2 types of allergy IGE and non-IGE. I’m non-IGE and you wouldn’t expect a rash but it’s still an allergy. Have a look here on Allergy UK.

I’d book another appointment at the GP. Have a read of the Nice Guidelines and take those and the Alkergy UK info with you if you’ve read them both and still think it could be an allergy.

Allergy UK also have a Helpline which you may find useful Smile

LowKeyKoala · 24/08/2018 16:29

I really appreciate all the messages the more info the better! Thank you so much

I’m so frustrated that I’ve been fobbed off for so long. Will it do any harm the fact LO has been on something she is allergic/ has an intolerance to for so long?

I’ll get an emergency appointment on Tuesday, I’ve timed it wrong really haven’t I!

I have absolutely no idea, put it this way, my lo is 4 months old and we only put him on it the week before last, he's really happy in himself and doesn't seem to give a shit :') I think it's quite common, just think loads of people don't pick up on it at all and just think it's colic. I'm sure lo is fine, yeah get an appointment and don't leave until you can get prescribed a milk to trial x

JiltedJohnsJulie · 24/08/2018 18:13

Lots of people can live for years without it being diagnosed so don’t worry too much. It might take a little while for his gut to heal but that’s usually around 2 weeks Smile

LowKeyKoala · 26/08/2018 04:43

Ended up going to the doctors to try and get the prescription milk...only to be told there’s no way it can be an allergy despite hearing the bubbles in LO tummy and the obvious pain when feeding.

The doctor knew we are trying anti reflux milk and have been for nearly 12 weeks now yet prescribed Gaviscon. LO has no discomfort lying down, does not bring back feeds (although I’m aware of silent reflux), I think it’s so hard when you know your baby and you know what it’s not!

Will have to make another trip in a week or so

JiltedJohnsJulie · 26/08/2018 07:44

Honestly, I’d go to your nearest walk-in centre and take the nice guidelines and the allergy Uk information.

El1995 · 26/08/2018 08:04

I would not wait for another appointment, they are fecking useless....They did the same to me, what I did was I actually bought a tub of the formula myself (a God send). Phone around your local pharmacies and ask if they will sell you a tub of neocate, ask if you'll need a prescription or not. Explain your circumstances and play the sympathy vote. I just explained I suspected he had a milk allergy or intolerance etc etc and I was getting it prescribed soon...I know it's £15 but we popped him on the tub we bought, seeing as he improved on it they couldn't really not prescribe it as he was so much better on it. Really push to do it, I knkw 15 quid is Alot but it's so worth it if your baby is happy and you have your sanity back, I was told the same by atleast 5 different people, just finished my morning feed, he used to take 1-1.5 hours to finish 3oz and he's just downed 5oz in 20mins, honestly I really had to fight to get my point across. Good luck and keep us updated x

El1995 · 26/08/2018 08:11

DO NOT GIVE HIM GAVISCON it made my lo 100 times worse!! He was Constipated and didn't poo normally for atleast 10days after we stopped it.... I wished I'd tried the milk before the gaviscon as it made everything worse. He was straining and crying more :-(

El1995 · 26/08/2018 08:15

Just a side note some will and some won't sell it to you without a prescription. I was desperate and out of 5 pharmacies 1 sold it to me, it's usually the small pharmacies, places like boots and tescos wouldn't, I think sainsburys did and Asda would have done aswell sorry for the long messages! Just want to help! I had to really search for info x

El1995 · 26/08/2018 08:22

I went to numerous appointments, gps, midwives, health visitors, I even rang 111, nobody helped me despite suspecting cmpa, my hv actually asked if I'd tried changing the teats?! Ummmmm no shit like I hadn't thought of that already -_-

El1995 · 26/08/2018 08:27

Oh and same here about reflux, lo cried when feeding yet would lay down happily and not cry? We were giving him meds despite it not really making a difference. Also apparently reflux like symptoms are a sign of cmpa and may dissappear completely on the right formula, currently weaning lo off omeprazol as we don't even think it was silent reflux to begin with! X

TheSheepofWallSt · 26/08/2018 08:32

My friends DS was like this, but she breastfed. Turned out, when she gave him dairy for the first time, he had a full blown anaphylactic reaction- he’d been reacting to the dairy she was consuming up until then.

Don’t be fobbed off- drs aren’t omniscient gods.

LowKeyKoala · 26/08/2018 13:14

I honestly can’t thank you all enough, El especially!

No we are holding off the gaviscon. I’ll phone round tomorrow thank you so much x

It’s horrible others have been through this but it makes a difference feeling like I’m not alone!

OP posts:
LowKeyKoala · 26/08/2018 13:16

Sheep exactly! Hope her Lo is ok? the problem was I was telling the dr that after 19 or whatever weeks of going back and forth I am now pretty certain it’s an allergy or intolerance and she was telling me I had to try gaviscon for 10 days before coming back Angry because it “wouldn’t do any harm”

Well I completely understand it causes constipation, wind and tummy pain and LO is going through enough tbh

OP posts:
LowKeyKoala · 26/08/2018 13:18

El when they say things like that to you... change the teat.... I can’t even cope it makes me so frustrated

I have bought literally every bottle and every tear size for that bottle Confused I can completely sympathise
