I'm hoping to go back in October part time if I can afford it. A few people have suggested different days are better to drop than others. I defo need fridays as i take DS swimming. Any experience of pros and cons for other days

If you drop Monday’s you won’t need to allow for bank holidays out of your leave which would be prorated.

TopHattie · 15/07/2018 19:42

Monday... you'll get a pro rata allowance for bank holidays, but will be able to add half of it to your annual leave if you're not working Mondays.

I'm having Mondays off from September. Apparently it's a good day because it means you don't have to use so much AL for bank holidays, and you avoid the Sunday night blues. I'm looking forward to being able to enjoy Sunday without all the millions of chores in preparation for the week. I don't have small children though.

Tigger001 · 15/07/2018 19:46

I think if I were going back , I would choose to drop a Monday. I used to hate the Sunday nights dread for the Monday morning, although I suppose it would then be a Monday night dread, but still I think a Monday would be best to drop for bank Holiday purposes and a 3 day weekend.

imsorryiasked · 15/07/2018 19:47

Monday's and then Fridays. Unending long weekends 😁

Polly2345 · 15/07/2018 19:52

I see you have to takr Fri off for swimmimg but if that ever changes... It's common to take Fridays off, so childminders and nurseries often have less children on those days. Can mean you child gets more individual attention on those days. My DD goes to nursery on a Friday and we often go to pick her up and find that she's had one on one for a good chunk of the day. That doesn't happen on her other nursery day.

Def keep your work days together in one block. It feels like you get a proper break then. Having a day off mid week means you don’t really switch off from work on it.
I like to do Monday to Wednesday as Monday feels like a work day even if I take it off

Jellybabie3 · 15/07/2018 20:05

I dont get the prorata thing for Mondays.....i am being dim....i wouldn't work bank holidays anyway

You get pro rata bank holidays. So if there are say 10 bank holidays and you work 3 of 5 days pw you would be entitled to 6 days (10/5×3). Apart from Xmas and good Friday all bank holidays are on a Monday. If you dont work Monday's you won't use any of your leave to cover these but you will still be entitled to the 3/5 time off.

huggybear · 15/07/2018 20:17

I'm also confused about the bank holidays Monday thing? Surely it's better to work on a Monday to get the bank holiday off too? Or are you saying you'd get a Tuesday off?

squidgesquodge · 15/07/2018 20:24

The Mondays thing depends on your employers holiday policy. If they let you take all bank holidays, then you want to work a Monday; if you only get a pro rated amount, you don't as you'll have to use up annual leave to have the bank holidays off.
I did Tues, Wed & Fri for years which I loved. No Sunday blues and was actually ready for work after a day of toddler groups on a Monday, Tues & Weds gave me a good stretch at work but wasn't away from DC for too long and then Fridays was always a bit more relaxed at work and I got to take advantage of monthly free drinks.

Jellybabie3 · 15/07/2018 20:24

Oooooh. Thanks! Makes much more sense to have a Monday then....

Will enjoy asking for Mondays and Fridays off....Grin

Your holiday entitlement would include a prorated amount of bank holidays. If you don't work a Monday you don't need to use any holiday entitlement so you have more freedom on which days to have off. Those that work a Monday need to use holiday entitlement to get that day off and therefore have less freedom of choice for they're days off

dementedpixie · 15/07/2018 20:26

Their*

Jellybabie3 · 15/07/2018 20:27

So if i have for example 18 days annual leave when part time (so prorated from 30) and DONT work Mondays. Do i still get 3/5 of the bank hols added on? So 4.6 additional days if based on 8 bank hols and working 3 days a week. Total 22.6 days leave??

Jasquers · 15/07/2018 20:29

Wednesdays. I work two days, then get a Friday feeling on Tues as I'm off wed, then have a day to recharge on Wess. Feels like it's almost the weekend when I go back on Thursday.

huggybear · 15/07/2018 20:30

Oh that's confusing, our annual leave doesn't include bank holidays or closures.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 15/07/2018 20:30

In the UK there are 8 bank hols, 4 of them always fall on a Monday, the others (Xmas Day, Boxing Day, NYD and Good Friday are hit and miss, except GF which is obvs always a Fri!)

I work part time and I'm entitled to 4 days Bank Hols. If a bank hol falls on a Monday then you don't use it as it's your normal day off, which leaves you to use it for one of the other Bank Hols that fall on your usual working day.

If you usually work a Monday and use up your part time entitlement on the 4 bank hol Mondays but other Bank hols in the year also fall on your usual working days then you have to take that time out of your annual leave entitlement.

Cauliflowershower · 15/07/2018 20:32

My annual leave doesn’t work like that so if I had Mondays off I’d just be off on a bank holiday as normal so a bit of a waste.
I actually really like working Monday, Thursday Friday-I get to see both ends of the week to make sure things are started and finished, the Monday feeling is diminished by it only being one day and the house seems to stay In a much better state by having a mid week clean and tidy

dementedpixie · 15/07/2018 20:33

The minimum annual entitlement is 5.6 weeks but, depending on the company, can include bank holidays rather than them being extra. What do full timers get?

PuppyMonkey · 15/07/2018 20:35

I had Mondays off when I worked p/t - having all the pro rata bank hols added to my regular annual leave usually resulted in me having a whole extra week off every year. Win.
