Best days to drop when going part time

I'm hoping to go back in October part time if I can afford it. A few people have suggested different days are better to drop than others. I defo need fridays as i take DS swimming. Any experience of pros and cons for other days

I don't understand this... Why would you have to use your annual leave entitlement to cover a BH if you work Mondays? If everyone else is off work anyway, why would a part-timer be penalised and have to use their precious annual leave to cover it?? Unless they get their BH entitlement as additional days leave above everyone else's? I'm confused Confused

I dropped a Tuesday. Didn’t realise how many long weekends I’d get with a bank holiday and a day off following

dementedpixie · 15/07/2018 20:38

You must get a bit more than the minimum as 5.6 weeks on a 5 day week would give 28 days. No I don't think you would get extra bank holiday leave on top of what you have been offered.

If you get 18 days leave and were working on a Monday then if you were off on a bank holiday Monday those hours would come out of your holiday entitlement. If you don't work a Monday normally then you can use those hours to take time off whenever you wanted. You have more choice on holiday days and are not tied to using them on bank holidays

I used to have tue -Thur off. It was fab, everyday I worked felt like a Friday, even Monday as I knew I had 3 days off to come.

PuppyMonkey · 15/07/2018 20:40

Cauliflower - if you work three days per week, and you have a colleague also working three days a week but they do Tuesday-Thursday, can’t you see that it’s unfair for you to have a day off on a week where a bank holiday falls, while they still work three days that week? That’s why all bank hols should be pro rata.

Jellybabie3 · 15/07/2018 20:41

Yes i get 30 days full time so 18 days pro rata. I will phone HR tomorrow...

There must be an element of bank holidays included already as full timers get more than 28 days which is the minimum. You won't get extra on top of that as you would then get more than full time staff.

If you choose not to work Monday then it gives you more freedom as to when you take holiday whereas full time staff and those working on a Monday will have to use annual leave days to cover bank holidays

huggybear · 15/07/2018 20:51

I get 23 days plus closure and BH which I always thought was ok, husband has started new job and gets 28 plus bank holiday and closure and if you have an appointment or something (not medical, say workmen) they don't make you use leave...!!

LooseThread · 15/07/2018 20:56

Mondays, because it frees up additional holiday allowance to use whenever you like as people have said. I usually get an extra 4 or 5 days off per year because of this. Smile Also commuting on Mondays is often a nightmare with overrunning engineering work or train cancellations so I avoid that. And by the time I've been at work for one day it's midweek so it seems to make the working week go faster. I couldn't bear to go back to 5 days now.

DwangelaForever · 15/07/2018 20:58

Gonna go against the grain here but when I worked at my old job I had wednesdays off and I loved it! A nice mid week break broke up the working week and I felt more productive on my two on days.

Kim82 · 15/07/2018 21:03

I work Mon, Tue, Wed and I love it. Bank holiday Monday’s mean I only have to work a 2 day week and I get 4 day weekends every week. I get my working week out of the way at the beginning of the week and from 6.30pm on a Wednesday I know my time is my own agaib until Monday.

MynameisJune · 15/07/2018 21:03

I had Fridays off doing 4 days a week, we get 26 days annual leave plus the 8 BH’s so 33. My annual leave was calculated from the 26 not the 33. But it meant on a BH week I could book the whole week for only 3 days leave rather than 4.

LaPufalina · 15/07/2018 21:07

I don't work Mondays for the reasons already given! I'm
If I was going to drop another day it'd be a mid-week one; nursery is really quiet on Friday so similar to a PP there's a lot more attention from staff/better ratio.

Jellybabie3 · 15/07/2018 21:11

OK that is really promising. I am not too worried about the Friday's being quiet as I know the childminder extremely well and know the number of children expected.

I will double check with HR but if correct I should get my 18 days once prorated plus an additional 4.6 days BH whoop working Tuesday to Thursday. It does sound appealing missing the Monday rush and having one sleep til hump day, then one til being back off. Grin

No you won't get the extra days on top as 18 days will already have included an element of bank holidays

dementedpixie · 15/07/2018 21:16

If full timers get 30 days in total (inclusive of any bank holiday time) then you won't get more than 18 days in total.

squirrelnutkins1 · 15/07/2018 21:18

Mon is best hol wise then fri.

Jellybabie3 · 15/07/2018 21:21

No full timers get 30 days and then 8 days bank hol on top

Jenijena · 15/07/2018 21:22

Love my Mondays off, particularly at this point on a Sunday!

DH likes having a Wednesday off, he gets two weekends a week...

Jellybabie3 · 15/07/2018 21:23

So i have until now had 30 days to use of my own free will plus the 8 bank hols each year. Pro rata I make that 18 days + 4.6

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 15/07/2018 21:26

Ah right, you hadn't specified it was 30 days plus 8 bank holidays on top. In that case you should get 22.8 days as you should get pro rated bank holidays too

Lallypopstick · 15/07/2018 21:27

Most people who do part time seem to be TWaTs - Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays Grin

Jellybabie3 · 15/07/2018 21:27

Sorry....

Thanks so much Grin

It depends what you do and whether you'd rather have a big chunk off/on or break it up. I first took off a Wednesday which broke up the week well then had to swap to a Thursday which was good too - I had three days to have a good go at work, a day off then Friday never seemed too much of a drag and tended to be slightly quieter.

One place I worked I did M, W and F which was a pain as I didn't end up with much holiday (about 11 days after Christmas etc) so I could never really spare a day to do a long weekend!

Justgivemesomepeace · 15/07/2018 21:30

I have had Mondays off for the last 13 years. It's brilliant. The kids go to school so I'm in the house on my own and can crack on getting the place sorted out after the weekend. No rush on Sundays to get everything sorted for the week with everyone under your feet. Can get shopping etc done in peace. With bank holidays, as I don't get the benefit of the days holiday, i get all bank hols that fall on Monday added to my leave. It's 4 days I think.
