Formula question

mum2bemay22 · 03/07/2018 16:38

Ok so I am new to the formula world and need some questions answering. My DS has just started to make the transition to formula and we are about to go on holiday so my question is, what do I do on the go at the airport? Usually I make his formula feeds up with the perfect prep machine so I never have to worry about the temperature, it’s just good to go but I won’t have that with me!
I have just ordered a milk powder dispenser and I’m guessing I just make the bottles up with only the sterile water until I need to add the powder? By the time DS will have the bottle in the airport, the water will inevitably have lost its warmth so what do I do then? Can he have it anyway and I don’t have to heat it or?
Sorry, first time parent and have not got a clue 🙈 TYIA! Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Use ready made for travelling. If you are making up from powder the water has to be at least 70 degrees.

PasstheStarmix · 03/07/2018 16:46

Hi, You can buy the little mini pre made bottles to travel with. You can pour straight in bottle and give your little one as is. If using powder you have to use water above 70 degrees to kill any bugs/bacteria in the powder.

ArnoldBee · 03/07/2018 16:48

Order the pre-made milk for the chemists at your airport to collect after you've been through security. Usually you need to ring about 14 days in advance.

As for the water you won’t need to pre boil if your baby is above 6 months old otherwise cool boiled is recommended.

mum2bemay22 · 03/07/2018 16:51

I thought you would be able to take the pre-made formula through security wouldn’t you? Also, what do people do then with the formula dispensers if you have to use with the right temp water when they are out and about and their baby is under 6 months? I have used premade formulas when he very first went onto formula but they are expensive

You have to use hot water to make the formula whatever age they are. If you read the instructions on the tub it explains its a food safety issue.

Passmethecrisps · 03/07/2018 17:10

You can order pre- made bottles from boots once you have been through security.

As a pp has said powder must be scalded with boiling water.

Nowadays I put 90ml boiling water in then formula powder. Shake vigorously then add the remaining cold water

mum2bemay22 · 03/07/2018 17:14

But no one is answering my question...they sell these powder dispensers because people use them on the go but people are not carrying around their kettles with them to use boiling water so my question is..what do you do in those circumstances? Someone must know

Of course I read the good safety, how insulting

Passmethecrisps · 03/07/2018 17:16

Sorry op.

I have carried a flask with me. With DD1 I made the formula up then flash cooled. I would then take this out in an insulated bag with a flask for warming up. Or you could use a flask to put the 90ml boiling water in, sterilise then add cold water for another source.

reddressblueshoes · 03/07/2018 17:16

Lots of places - coffee shops, IKEA- offer boiling water for parents so I assume that's what they're for? I don't think using them on the go means you can use them on the side of the road, just that you can bring them with you to somewhere there is a kettle.

mum2bemay22 · 03/07/2018 17:20

Thank you passmethecrisps, finally lol!!

Boiling water in a flask is good for about 4 hours I think.

Eeeeek2 · 03/07/2018 17:24

flask to keep water hot until needed. Then use the lid of flask with cold water to cool until correct temperature.

Passmethecrisps · 03/07/2018 17:25

Sorry it took so long! It took me ages to get my head around it with DD1 - everyone on here was so keen to quote WHO guidelines that No one’s question ever got answered.

I have found more places nowadays are arsey about giving boiling water for bottles so safer to be self-sufficient.

And my dd was on prescription formula so the lovely wee pre-made cartons were no use to me either

mum2bemay22 · 03/07/2018 17:33

Yes I have found that when I have been out with friends that companies no longer want to give you boiling water. You can’t blame them in some ways I suppose!
Do you just use a normal thermo flask? How many bottles do you think you can get out of one flask?
Premade is good but you have to buy a lot for the amount they need I think and it soon adds up!

Also my other question is, if I just made up the bottles I needed for the flight with my prep machine at home and then put into those insulated bags, how long could I keep them for?

OP posts:
Passmethecrisps · 03/07/2018 17:34

MAybe two of three bottles from one flask but I wouldn’t be out that long as my dd is older now and doesn’t have that much any more

Eeeeek2 · 03/07/2018 17:43

In all honesty I'd use ready made for the flight, hot water small baby and not much space on a plane plus turbulence does not sound like a good plan.

Then use flask when out and about.

Where are you going? Is the tap water drinking water because if not then certain bottled water is better for making bottles up because of sodium and sulphate www.nhs.uk/common-health-questions/childrens-health/can-i-use-bottled-water-to-make-up-baby-formula-infant-formula/

Eeeeek2 · 03/07/2018 17:46

I think 2 hours is the recommended after perfect prep. It would be better to make up with boiled water then flash cool (under the tap) then place in the fridge to get really cold. Then put in cooler bag to take with you.

LittleBearPad · 03/07/2018 18:37

Use ready made on the plane. You can order it to pick up at boots after security.

Then you’ll presumably have a kettle in your hotel room / villa etc. Or buy a travel kettle to make sure.

Ready made is much easier for out and about in any event day to day.

welshweasel · 03/07/2018 18:41

Deffo ready made for the plane - you can take as much as you need through security or pick it up in boots airside. Once at the hotel we used a tommee tippee flask and made it up with a shot of boiling water, add powder, mix, then top up with bottled water (make sure you get a low sodium one) - so basically like the perfect prep. It’s really not worth the hassle to try and do that on the plane though, trust me!!

ArnoldBee · 03/07/2018 18:55

It's expensive for the duration of your holiday but not something you will be doing in normal every day life so really is simpler to splash the cash especially as you may not know what's available. Some folks use flasks in normal life but to be honest it's not a perfect solution.

mrsnec · 03/07/2018 19:15

I travelled with a made up bottle and dry powder separately for the next one. When I needed to make another one I used boiled water from the cafe or on board the flight.

Where I live you can't buy pre mixed formula but you can buy baby water which I've used to make bottles up with and I've never had a problem.

Smurfy23 · 03/07/2018 19:19

You can make it up from powder as long as you use it within 2 hours.

The ready made stuff is ideal though. You can bring enough baby milk on a flight to last you for that flight and they will let you through security with that. Failing that you can usually buy the odd bottle once you've passed security. You can also pre order milk powder and ready made to collect airside so it doesn't take up your allowance.
