Highchair for BLW

Sealant · 26/06/2018 21:55

I’m a first time mum about to embark on our BLW journey and am looking for a suitable high chair.

I’ve been researching all the various ones available and can’t seem to find the perfect one which meets all of the suggested criteria. This being:

  • Folds and doesn’t take much floor space
  • Height adjustable
  • Removable 5 point harness for washing
  • High back to support young babies head
  • Can be used with or without tray
  • Easy to clean
  • Looks nice

Can anyone recommend a highchair which has all of this.

Or alternatively are there points I don’t need to worry about, I hadn’t thought about any of this until I started reading reviews on chairs and I’m wondering if I’m overthinking it.

I know the Ikea Antilop is very popular but we don’t have the space to store a highchair that doesn’t fold.

The legs are really quick and easy to take off the IKEA Antilop. I came onto your thread to recommend it. I know it doesn't tick all the boxes you want, but it's great and cheap.

I'd recommend buying the tray and 2 of the blow up cushion inserts (one to use and one to wash!).

IKEA Antilop or Stokke Tripp Trapp.

OlennasWimple · 26/06/2018 22:02

Honestly, the Antilop is pretty much the only correct answer to "what high chair should I buy" Smile

Just get the Ikea one. Honestly you won’t regret it. Take the legs off to store if you must.

InDubiousBattle · 26/06/2018 22:05

Get the Antilop.

anotherangel2 · 26/06/2018 22:05

Yes to the Ikea one. If your baby needs head support they are not ready for blw.

pileoflaundry · 26/06/2018 22:07

The Ikea one. Being able to clean it by giving it a quick wipe whilst holding the baby in the other hand made it a winner for me.

GrumpyGoose · 26/06/2018 22:07

What's the thinking behind the height adjustment and the high back for head support? Just wondering if they can be struck from your criteria to broaden the range? Head support probably not necessary for BLW specifically because they're meant to be supporting their own head for BLW (I think).

We have the antilop, I recommend it!

GrumpyGoose · 26/06/2018 22:08

And I just wipe the harness with a wipe 😅 he gets messy but they still look new having never removed them for a proper wash!

DwangelaForever · 26/06/2018 22:08

Ikea antilop is honestly the best! Although it is annoying it doesn't fold

Anoisagusaris · 26/06/2018 22:09

So you need a highchair? Blw doesn’t require a special highchair.Hmm

QueasySqueezy · 26/06/2018 22:11

If your baby needs a head support, then you may well be weaning too early. I thought the guidelines were to wait until they could hold up their own head, pick up food etc. So assuming your baby doesn’t have other health issues then you can strike that off your list.

Do you really need height adjustment? Would that be for sitting at different tables? Measure your usual table and work with that perhaps?

I have the Ikea blames chair as I didn’t need it to fold and I wanted something sturdy that looks good. It’s great. Not the comfiest looking but dd happy in it.

Thissameearth · 26/06/2018 22:14

Agree - shopping for high chairs equals buying Ikea antilop. I bought another one returned and accepted this is the only one! I’m also blw and agree that head support is non issue as pre requisite for blw is sitting up and head control etc. The blow up insert is all you need at the start but we ditched it after less than a week as getting in way. The best bit is that the tray is sold separately so I bought two (use one and wash one in dishwasher 👍🏻).

TellerTuesday4EVA · 26/06/2018 22:16

Few years ago now but..... I bought the mamas & papas loop high chair for £250 😱, PFB & all that jazz!!
A week later I bought a second liner for another £30 because I literally had to wash it every day sometimes twice, a month later the entire thing looked like it had been in a war & I bought an IKEA one for £15- worst & best ever parent purchases respectively!!

TanginaBarrons · 26/06/2018 22:21

@Anoisagusaris blw is much messier than traditional weaning so needs an easier to clean high chair. With my first 2 I weaned traditionally and had the trip trap with fabric seat insert. Wouldn't have worked for 3&4 who were/are blw.

fabulous01 · 26/06/2018 22:21

Ikea all the way

AiryFairy1 · 26/06/2018 22:26

A bit in the £££ range but the baby Bjorn highchair is great - a good (low-ish) height for joining us at the table, no straps to clean - the tray part clips baby in (not explaining this well but it’s v safe) and the tray has a removable layer that goes in dishwasher if needed. And it folds away very neatly.
Agree they should have good head/neck control and be showing an interest in food before starting with solids.
Some people I know put a plastic tablecloth under the highchair to catch dropped bits 😬

NannyR · 26/06/2018 22:28

I would say that you need a high chair that will pull up to your table so that the baby can join in with family mealtimes. The antilop without the tray or the stokke Tripp trapp are good choices. Neither fold, but if you have a dining table with chairs you just replace one of the chairs with the high chair. The Tripp trapp is expensive but I know of 11 and 12 year olds who still use them as a desk chair for homework so you get a lot of use out of them, they are solid enough for an adult to sit on too.
Personally I don't like 5 point harnesses on high chairs, I don't leave babies unattended whilst they are eating anyway and if they start to choke I would want to be able to get them out as quickly as possible rather than fiddling with buckles and straps.

Anoisagusaris · 26/06/2018 22:29

I know what BLW is. All high chairs need to be easy to clean. I can’t imagine using a fabric insert without needing to clean it for any method of weaning. Surely traditionally weaned babies still get a chance to touch their food and feed themselves? Not to mention refusing food and it flying everywhere!

lineyturner · 26/06/2018 22:32

Only saw the title and thought 'Antilop'

Easy to clean, so straight forward and durable.

GimbleInTheWabe · 26/06/2018 22:37

100% ikea antilop. Seriously if you're BLW you won't be cleaning a 5 point strap every night because it gets messssy! Keeping DS (8mo) clean after he eats is hard enough. You want something cheap and cheerful a la the ikea one.

In fact ours was used by my niece for 3 years and is still in perfect condition.

It is FOURTEEN POUNDS op, ya can't argue with that.

GimbleInTheWabe · 26/06/2018 22:39

And fwiw we live in a one bed flat and our front room doubles as a dining room/play room/lounge and we still have space for the antilop. The tray is removable so it actually takes up v little space.

schooltripwoes · 26/06/2018 22:57

The Ikea antilop is 100% the best. If you don't have space for it, then how about a Handisitt at your existing table? With a decent mat on the table, it would be fine not having a tray and has the added bonus that you can take it out and about with you.

SuperSharpShooter82 · 26/06/2018 23:01

Another one who came on here to say the Ikea chair! Grin

Ginger1982 · 26/06/2018 23:03

You are massively overthinking this in my opinion.

I have the mothercare teddy's toy box and it's great!
