Highchair for BLW

I’m a first time mum about to embark on our BLW journey and am looking for a suitable high chair.

I’ve been researching all the various ones available and can’t seem to find the perfect one which meets all of the suggested criteria. This being:

  • Folds and doesn’t take much floor space
  • Height adjustable
  • Removable 5 point harness for washing
  • High back to support young babies head
  • Can be used with or without tray
  • Easy to clean
  • Looks nice

Can anyone recommend a highchair which has all of this.

Or alternatively are there points I don’t need to worry about, I hadn’t thought about any of this until I started reading reviews on chairs and I’m wondering if I’m overthinking it.

I know the Ikea Antilop is very popular but we don’t have the space to store a highchair that doesn’t fold.

Another vote for baby bjorn- see eBay for 2nd hand, theirvwebsite does a good demo video

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Baby can hold her head but it was a negative against a number of high chairs in the reviews so I took it to be important.

The height adjustment was because reviews on the ones without said without it baby will be either to high or too low as they grow.

Before reading up I’d say my criteria would have been:

  • Easy to clean
  • Used with & without tray
  • Looks nice
  • foldable

We live in a v small 2 up, 2 down with giant fire places which take up half the rooms and most of the wall space. I’d be buying one which clips on to the table if my DH agreed but he thinks it’s important to be able to feed in different rooms and the garden so wants one with legs.

We’d originally agreed on the Antilop but the reviews on the legs sticking out put us off as the only place it can go is half way in the door way.

I guess it is so cheap we could just buy and then if it is a problem get something else.

The legs really don't stick out that much

Did the reviews mention that it can go in the dishwasher (if you have one)? It's really easy to clean by hand as well, because the design is so simple that it doesn't have lots of nooks and crannies where food can sit and fester - a particular issue with BLW

I bought one that met all you criteria then chucked it and got the Ikea one.

I think once you start weaning your priority will be one that's easy to clean! And they don't get much easier than the Ikea one!

mrsoutnumbered · 27/06/2018 08:05

The trouble with folding ones is that they have lots of crevices and nooks and crannies where good always ends up.

Most if not all high chairs will take up a lot of floor space.

I had an Ikea antilop and it is SO easy to clean. I wasn't keen on the strap though.

Now I have a baby dan chair. It converts to a normal chair and you can adjust the height, so perhaps you could remove one of the chairs from your table and park that up instead?

InDubiousBattle · 27/06/2018 08:13

If you're really short on floor space then I think a clip on one is a good idea. Buty an oil cloth to go under it. If you want to eat in the garden then the baby just sits on the oil cloth.

@Anoisagusaris who pissed on your chips? Confused

In my experience of 4 kids and a variety of weaning methods, blw is much messier. I appreciate having an easier to clean high chair than the stokke trip trap with my blw babies. It was fine for trad weaned ones. That's all I'm saying.

We had this one- light, compact, easy to clean, the straps came out easily and the cover is machine washable

GrumpyGoose · 27/06/2018 17:42

What about one you strap into a dining chair?

UnaOfStormhold · 27/06/2018 17:51

I agree head support isn't an issue if you're doing BLW. We had an antilop but also had a chicco pocket snack which goes on a chair. NB they look as if they're fine for just putting outside on a flat surface but they're not stable enough to stand on their own
.

RiceButt · 27/06/2018 18:04

Antilop is easy to clean and even easier if you have a dishwasher. I've just washed the whole thing in the dishwasher, straps included. Looked lovely and clean until lunch time

BlatantlyPlacemarking · 27/06/2018 19:46

I bought a fancy high chair like you want, hated it. Bought the Ikea one. Best thing ever.

HappyLollipop · 27/06/2018 19:54

I've the mothercare one (hello friends) it's got different seating heights, reclines, seat is easy to wipe down but if it gets too dirty the seat cover comes off as do the five point harness straps so can go in these. It folds up and is fairly easy to store. I think it was a good buy and my DS loves being in it!

Mol1628 · 27/06/2018 19:54

Yet another vote for Ikea.

So easy to take the legs off. Foldable ones will get sticky and crumby very quickly.

Fits easily in the car for travelling

Can be used with or without the tray

The only chair you need. And the cheapest too!

HappyLollipop · 27/06/2018 19:55
  • seat cover and straps go in the wash (stupid phone!)
BossWitch · 27/06/2018 20:03

Get the ikea one first. It's bloody brilliant BUT if it's too bulky for your rooms with the legs, you can look at getting something else with the benefit of a) only having spent 15 quid on the first high chair, and b) having a bit of experience of doing the blw and knowing what you want to prioritise.

Best case scenario - you get a high chair that works for you first time out and it only costs 15 quid.

Worst case scenario - you spend 15 quid finding out what doesn't work for you, take it to the charity shop and see it as fifteen pounds worth of market research.

We did blw and had the blow up insert that you can buy for the ikea antilop, it just got the cover zipped off every few days and bunged in the washing machine. As dd got older and bigger we stopped using it.

BossWitch · 27/06/2018 20:10

With tray and insert near the start of blw.

Pulled up to table with no insert.

I’ve been to ikea today and bought the Antilop. I have to admit the legs don’t look half as wide as they do in the pictures I’ve seen.

We’ll see how we get on.

Thanks everyone!

Was coming on to say save the money and just get the antilop so glad to see you have

Honestly my Ikea hating husband keeps saying we need another one for outside eating
